Deep brown with ruby and amber highlights and an ample lasting white head. Sweet toffee and chocolate on the nose with a hint of something not quite right - fishy maybe?. Very sweet up front on the palate, some alcohol and dark malts. The sweetness suggests some body but the beer is quite thin. The bitterness is reasonably well balanced but that fishiness is back in the finish. The bottle I had was labelled 6% abv - there's not a lot of dopple in this bock. Forgettable.

Quite nice, a bit sticky and syrupy. Raisiny, a touch roasty and spicy, lightish body, smooth, with a rich flavour, alcohol shines through towards the end a bit, but fairly well hidden, quite decent.

fair attmept at a bock by monteiths. this style tends to be just a bit too sweet when brewed in this region, and this fortunately is not as sweet as the others ive tried. lacks a bit of balance, but not bad.

color looked a bit thin, almost like coke. maybe i didnt pour it properly, but there was no head at any stage. possessed raisiny aromas, burnt notes, and some sweetness which was tempered by peppery tones and the zing of alcohol. flavor was of like nature, although the fruitiness was more pronounced. some molasses sweetness, a hint of chocolate, black pepper and a strong presence of alcohol. like the color, a little bit thin, and quite dry, partly due to the hops, partly to the spicy characters. from the middle palate i really felt a bit of bite at the back of my throat. didnt seem to be as well rounded as id like, but overall not unbearably so.

its always nice to see breweries having a go at styles like this, particularly when they dont butcher it. it certainly hits the spot and is fairly potent. always leaves me feeling a bit more warm and fuzzy inside than others of the same strength. pretty good drop which is a step in the right direction.

a: clear ruby red color, with little head ever appearing, not even a ring remains, no apparent bubbles
s: very sweet malts like caramel, slight hints of roasted malts
t: roasty flavor on the front, sweet caramel taste, evident alcohol taste at the end along with bits of hoppy bitterness
m: highly carbonated until the very end, medium body
d: pretty easy drinking, not the best doppelbock i've had, but worth another try

A - Dark brown colour with ruby red highlights when held up to light. Fluffy inch of head that slowly falls away.
S - Some chocolate notes on top of a dark fruit base. A bit of spice.
T - Very similar to the smell but with the dark fruits dominating.
M - Medium bodied with a smooth mouthfeel. Medium carbonation.
D - A nice beer that I'd probably buy again. Not something to session though.

Appearance- Poured into a glass mug, dark red with bubbly off white one finger head, bubbles stick to side of glass, looks good.

Smell- Some fruity yeast aroma but can't smell that much.

Taste- Smooth and malty with hint of chocolate and bitter hop taste at the end, quite long and well balanced.

Mouthfeel- Good carbonation and feels slightly creamy.

Overall- Nice well balanced beer and good value for the price, good winter drink. Will try again.

Putting aside what a bunch of knobs the people over at DB Monteith's are for trying to trademark the name Doppelbock this is a fairly okay beer. Chocolate malt is the order of the day, kind of a powdered drinking chocolate kind of thang. No hop action to speak of, it's balanced nicely and there is nothing offensive about this beer, just that it is a touch bland. However it's well-priced and not bad drinking for the season.

Chilled 33cl bottle poured into a pint glass

Pours with a thick collar of foam head that weighs tight and then reverses back into the body of the beer with a small amount of lacing. The body of the beer is a regal deep dark hue.

Aroma is slightly underwhelming with mild toffee and dark fruits blending nicely with malt, unfortunately you really need to work at getting those aromas out.

In the mouth the moderate amount carbonation is noticeable but all round the beer is quite well rounded. Tastes are driven largely by sticky malt and roasted dark fruits.

Good beer but not a star performer in what is a heavily populated category

Bottle: standard 330mL brown bottle with a simple but stylish label.

Appearance: poured into a tulip glass - transluscent dark brown with ruby highlights. A good, thick one-finger head hangs about for a good while with decent lacing.

Aroma: good aromas of sweet toffee and caramel malts, and some roasted coffee malts behind. A touch of spice also. Smells good.

Taste: a very smooth toffee and caramel with those roasted malts again. Just a good, solid and easy-drinking dark lager.

Aftertaste: the flavours linger for a time, which is nice. A touch of bitterness on the finish also.

Mouth feel: moderate in feel with a moderate carbonation that carries the flavour nicely. A very nice sessional beer.

Overall: this one was a big surprise for me - a real gem from Monteith's, who usually present average at best. The best part of this is the price, at only AU$55 for a case of 24 x 330mL. For a great dark beer that is a fantastic price - the only let down is the recent (to me at least) revelation that Monteith's have attempted to trademark the name 'doppelbock', even though it is a beer style, not their personally-devised name for their beer. To put that into perspective, they have already trademarked the 'name' (or rather, the international style) Radler and Saison, meaning no other NZ breweries can name their beer Radler or Saison, and no genuine internationals can import such a beer to NZ.Pretty poor stuff. Even though I live in Australia and not NZ, I'm not sure I'll buy Monteith's any more after finding out the above trademarking stuff, just on principle.

Very tasty, just the ticket for BBQ's with pork on a hot summer arvo.
