The original from 1909: mild, delicate and simply delicious with 4.9% alcohol. Brewed in the heart of Hamburg with much love.

Tolerance, versatility and fullness of life – that's what the Astra brand is all about! The heart and anchor logo makes Astra absolutely unique and unmistakeable. The heart stands for life, love and even more fun. The anchor represents Astra's rough and tumble St. Pauli heritage.

The colour is clear yellow; the two finger head is white and airy. Lots of fine lacing occurs.

The smell is malty. Some bitter flavours, hints of sour dough and butter.

The taste is quite simple. Some notes of dough, bread-like malt. A mild slowly growing clean bitterness with some sour flavours and a hint of butter and cream. The aftertaste is bitter with some grassy notes.

The carbonation is mild to medium. The liquid is medium smooth.

Somewhere between the German Pilsener and Pale Euro Lager styles, it’s just another German macro beer…

330 ml can, no dating I noticed on it. Thanks to Brutaltruth for this one! Served in a pilsner style glass, the beer pours a clear gold color with about an inch off-white head that stuck around a little while. Small amount of lacing. Not much to the aroma, the brew smells like bready/grainy malt and grassy hops. Taste is similar to the aroma but with a little more of a kick, and the addition of some herbal hops flavors too. Light bitterness in the finish. Mouthfeel/body is light, it's smooth and easy to drink with a moderate amount of carbonation. I thought it was decent enough, worth a try if you come across a can or 2.

330ml can

Nothing special really. Looks better than your average AAL but this is a German pils. The smell is the highlight, hoppier than most. Taste is mild, a little malt sweetness ending bitter and grassy. A mild off-flavor, otherwise very drinkable, but boring

As far as German Pilseners go, this isn’t going to wow anyone. It’s unoffensive and very drinkable, despite a bit of an odd metallic/vegetative taste on the swallow. It’s certainly better than most AALs, but nothing I’d seek out.

The pour is golden yellow. The taste is grain & mild yeast. This is a smooth & easy drinking German Pilsner, pick one up I think you would like it. Cheers! B-

Holsten-Brauerei “Astra Urtyp”
,33L brown glass bottle coded “Mindestens haltbar bis: 07.01.22 and sampled on 26.09.21

Look: Clear golden body beneath a full head of white foam. Good to very good head retention and lacing.
Smell: Malty with bready notes and just a smear of grassy and herbal hops.
Taste: Malty with grainy and bready malt that’s lightly charged with floral, grassy, and herbal hops. A stiff bitterness backs it and it finishes mainly dry in the end. It lingers with bready malt, herbal hops, and a dull bitterness.
Feel: Medium bodied and gently crisp with a fine-bubbled, median carbonation.
Overall: An interestingly full lager in terms of maltiness. The hops could be fuller but then it would be a different beer. Satiating.

A: Pours a crystal clear pale golden yellow in color with moderate amounts of active visible carbonation rising quickly from the bottom of the glass and moderate bright yellow + amber + honey colored highlights. The beer has a three finger tall fizzy creamy foamy bright white head that reduces to a medium sized patch of thin film covering a little more than 40% of the surface of the beer surrounded by a large patch of mottled very thin film covering the remainder of the surface of the beer and a thin ring at the edges of the glass.

S: Slightly heavier than moderate aromas of bready + cereal grain malts with a light to moderate amount of grainy sweetness. Moderate aromas of lager yeast and light to moderate aromas of grassy hops.

T: Upfront there are slightly heavier than moderate flavors of bready + cereal grain malts with a light to moderate amount of grainy sweetness. That is followed by moderate flavors of lager yeast. Finally there are light to moderate flavors of grassy hops which impart a light amount of bitterness which slowly fades away leaving a clean finish.

M: Slightly heavier than light bodied with moderate amounts of carbonation. Crisp with a clean finish.

O: Easy to drink with well hidden alcohol and a crisp + refreshing mouthfeel. Enjoyable but nothing that really stands out about it.

12oz can purchased at the Spokane Valley Total Wine. According to the stamp on the bottom of the can this is best by January, 2021. Guess I'm hitting it just in time.

Poured into a wide mouth glass, this was a mostly clear but slightly chill-hazed golden color, with a decent-sized off-white head that dropped faster than a Trump Administration court challenge. Minimal, spotty lace.

Mildly crackery malt aroma, with a slight whiff of floral hops. Not much going on here.

A little more interesting in the taste that in the smell, but not by much. This is mostly malty, in a bland sort of way. What hoppiness there is stands out with a faint, herbal kind of taste.

Medium bodied, with a clean mouthfeel, but lacks that crispness a pilsener should have.

Pretty "meh" pilsener. I'm a little disappointed. I was looking forward to a pilsener from an area I hung out in a bit back in the 90s when I was going to school in Germany.

Clear yellow beer with a medium sized temporary white colored head.

Smells of toasted grain and yeast.

Taste sweet with a little bitterness. Pretty generic beer taste.

Mouthfeel is watery.

Overall this mist be the "Natty Lite" of Germany or something.
