22oz bottle poured into a teku glass

A- pours a pale bright golden-yellow color with a small foamy white head that reduces to a small layer and a ring on top, a bit of lacing left behind

S- very dank aroma up front with lots of pine and a hint of citrus, fresh leafy hops

T- spicy Belgian yeast up front leads to some piney and floral notes, a bit of citrus on the finish

M- medium body with moderate carbonation leads to a foamy mouthfeel and a crisp finish

O- amazing aroma, the taste isn't as intense, still a god Belgian IPA

"Foray Belgian Style India Pale Ale." (Though the abbreviation "I.P.A." also apears on the label). 1 pint 6 fl oz brown glass bottle with appealing label art and branded pry-off pressure cap purchased at Lukas Liquor in Centennial, CO an hour ago and served cold into a Sam Adams perfect pint glass in low altitude Castle Rock, CO.

Reviewed live. Expectations are high given the brewery; Deschutes is one of our best. 6.40% ABV. Best by: 10/15/14.

No bubble show forms as it's poured.

HEAD: 4.5 fingers wide. Off-white colour. Decent thickness. Okay creaminess. No lacing sticks to the sides of the glass as the head recedes. Fluffy. Could be softer, fuller, and creamier.

Retention is quite good - about 7-8 minutes.

BODY: Clear lemon yellow of average vibrance. Clean; no yeast particulate or hop sediment is visible.

Appears well-carbonated. It looks good for a Belgian IPA, but isn't unique or special within the style. Certainly lighter in colour than an American IPA.

AROMA: Pear, clove, lemon zest, grassy hops, lemongrass, and unfortunately a kiss of detergent/soapy character indicative that this spent a biteen too long in primary. Some light subtle tropical fruit - mango and tangerine, primarily. Maybe a hint of lime? Some watermelon rind. Pale malts. Ale esters. Faintly spicy Belgian yeast.

It's a pleasant aroma of mild strength. I'm looking forward to trying it, and the tropical fruit is certainly unexpected in a Belgian IPA - somehow rustic vitamin-y yeast and islandic fruits don't seem fit for one another, but based on the aromatics I may be pleasantly surprised. It wouldn't be the first time Deschutes has put me in my place.

TASTE: Yup, the tropical fruit works well here. Mango and papaya blend well with the more traditional pear and floral hop notes. Pale malts, helles malts. Clove/spicy Belgian yeast. Some lemongrass twang. Faint lemon zest. Grassy hops are present throughout, but I don't think they're Noble or Saaz. Pretty zesty.

It's well balanced, if slightly too bitter. I'd love more Belgian character - especially where the clove and yeast are concerned. Average depth, duration, and intensity of flavour.

Good flavour amplitude. This is cohesively built, but not quite gestalt. Comes together nicely.

TEXTURE: Crisp, well-carbonated, light-bodied, smooth, and wet.

Not oily, gushed, hot, boozy, astringent, harsh.

Complements the taste well. Overall presence on the palate is good.

OVERALL: A very drinkable Belgian IPA from Deschutes. The tropical fruit notes work surprisingly well, though admittedly the Belgian influence is largely unsubstantial. Its light body and pleasant taste make it a beer any enthusiast will enjoy, but I had higher hopes given the brewery. It's absolutely worth trying, but isn't the game-changer I've been waiting for in this style. Still, at this price point and distribution ubiquitousness, it's one of the better examples of the style out there. I'll enjoy finishing the bottle.

High B-

Would pair well with chicken, salad, and/or white fish.

Poured from a 22 oz. bottle into a Surly Darkness chalice. Label says best by 10/15/14.

Appearance: Pours a bright and hazy yellowish golden orange with a lot of rising bubbles. Solid two fingers of white head with decent retention. Leaves a decent amount of lacing.

Smell: A yeasty, fruity, and spicy Belgian style IPA aroma with big hints of citrus fruit and spice. Belgian yeast with some hints of clove, pepper, and funk. Huge aroma of tropical fruits with hints of mango juice, grapefruit, orange, lemon zest, pineapple, apricot, and melon. Also some big hints of green apples and pear. Also some subtle earthy hops. Pale malt with hints of grains, wheat, straw, and cracker. A very nice juicy aroma.

Taste: Like the smell, a very fruity, yeasty, and spicy Belgian IPA taste with a big presence of citrus fruit and spice. Upfront Belgian yeast with some notes of funk, clove, and pepper. Big juicy taste of tropical fruits with notes of mango, lemon zest, grapefruit, orange, pineapple, apricot, and melon. Also a big taste of green apple and pear along with slight banana. Subtle notes of earthy and piney hops. Soft malt presence with notes of grains, straw, wheat, and cracker. A very nice taste that is fairly tart, sweet, and drying.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with a fairly high level of carbonation. Very juicy and fairly spritzy. Finishes dry.

Overall: A very good take on a Belgian style IPA. Good mix of fruit esters and spice with a citrus presence that almost tastes like straight mango juice.

It pours almost a neon yellow color, and slightly hazy. Aromas of apple and pear hit the nose, with a hint of banana. The hops are very gentle here, but strong enough to twist the yeast to an awesome cooperation. It tastes bright and fresh, with citrus and fresh cut grass. Overall I think this is awesome. A mixing of styles thoughtfully done to complement one another.

There is something wrong here. The interplay between yeast and hops is astringent, like some sort of abrasive counter cleaner. It's got a nasty bitter lemon peel thing with no body. Too bad. It is really pretty.
