Copper colored with an inch of frothy beige on top. Moderate lacing. I smell citrus hops and light malt. The taste is definitely a citrus hop forward IPA that has plenty of light malt to keep things in balance. The mouth is lightly sticky, fairly dry, and lightly chalky.

22oz bottle - another IPA from Deschutes - sorry, but doesn't there seem to be soooo many of them already, yeah?

This beer pours a clear, medium copper amber colour, with a near teeming tower of puffy, finely foamy, and chunky ecru head, which leaves some decent crowded island group lace around the glass as it slowly but evenly subsides.

It smells of bready and doughy caramel malt, muted domestic citrus rind, a touch of further tropical fruitiness, some muddled earthy yeastiness, and quite heady leafy, weedy, and above all, piney green hop bitters. The taste is gritty and grainy pale malt, lemon and orange rind extract, a certain flinty stoniness, and rather acerbic pine resin and its fellow forest floor friends.

The carbonation is fairly restrained in its basically functional frothiness, the body a solid middleweight, and generally smooth, those big-ass hop bitters doing us all a favour by dialing it down a few notches here. It finishes trending dry, the piney character really starting to run roughshod over the lingering maltiness.

Yeah, I guess I was a tad presumptive in asserting that all Deschutes' IPAs are the same - this one surely isn't. Lots of lop-sided green hoppiness abounding hereabouts, so much so that my side palate is asking me if we can go home a bit early tonight, to which I say - fuck no! This hophead is enjoying himself just a little too much right about now.

Best by date of 07/19/16

Appearance - Pours crystal clear and reddish copper in color with a frothy, off-white two-finger width head. Great retention. Eventually settles to a thin, consistent film across the surface. Solid lacing that clings to the glass in big chunks and broken webs.

Smell - Spicy with lesser notes of citrus and floral hop character.

Taste - Hop forward but fairly balanced, with prominent earthy and floral notes with moderate peppery spice and lesser citrus. Biscuity malt backbone. Spice, light citrus and malt sweetness in the finish.

Mouthfeel - Medium in body with moderate carbonation. Super slick texture lends itself to easy drinking, with a soft, slightly dry finish.

Overall - Good IPA, but nothing that's gonna knock your socks off, and it's certainly no 'hop bomb'. Highly drinkable. Could be a nice option on a hot day.

22oz best by 01/24/17. Beer pours into my craft pint glass brassy red in color. Imperial Red Ale, perhaps? Apparently "down n dirty IPA" does not mean CDA. Big tan foam on top, too. Very pretty. Aroma reminds me immediately of Inversion, an IPA I have become very familiar with. But this one weighs in at "merely" 6.3%, half a click less than the other. Aside from color, what will set this beer apart from Fresh Squeeze and Pinedrops?

Well, it's piny, and seriously bitter. More bitter (higher apparent alpha) than Inversion, and more highly attenuated. This beer tastes like Inversion looks and Inversion tastes like this beer looks. There's also Cinder Cone, which actually is a red ale, and has nothing to do with this at all.

I think the "Down 'N Dirty" of this beer, color aside, is it's simplicity. It's not a rich bouquet of complex hop aromas. It doesn't offer a precocious balance of bitter and sweet. It's just a simple, straight ahead hop bomb in single [American] IPA proportions. Approachable for IPA drinkers who want nothing gussying up their IPAs. I wonder if they market it at a lower price point? Great mouthfeel, too. Label says it's bottle conditioned.

Pours an effervescent copper with 2 fingers of beige colored head. Bottle conditioned, a few floaties, nice lacing & head retention

S: Bready, woody hops, mango

T: Follows the nose, grassiness, a little pine up front. Herbal hops, pine, a little bready sweetness & some grassiness and a little mango as this warms. Finishes with herbal and woody hops, a little mango & pear

MF: Medium body, subtle carbonation. Carbonation picks up as this warms, pretty good balance, pretty good balance

Pretty good for the style, but not upper tier like many of Deschutes offerings

Clear golden orange with as much head as you care to pour. Good retention and plentilful lace.
Smell is pine and pale malt.
Taste is bitter pine funky hops with pale malt and a touch of caramel malt.
Mouthfeel is medium with good carbonation. Finish is medium dry and bitter.
Easy drinking IPA that is a bit dirty in a good way. I enjoyed it a lot.

Pours a hazy sunburst orange color with a tight, off white head that leaves little chunks of lacing.

Smells of bright, citrus hops and toasted malt.

Tastes of the toasted malt layered with the bright hops. Malts lead off with notes of caramel, toasted bread, and some syrupy sweetness. Hops come next with notes of citrus and tropical fruits along with some herbal notes. Finishes fairly clean.

Mouthfeel is medium with a smooth amount of carbonation.

Overall, this is a pretty good IPA, could use a bit more oomph though.

Pours a crisp clear deep golden pale, huge frothy white foam that leaves tons of lacing. Aroma is forest and earthy, some notes of citrus. Moderate bitterness that sticks around for a long time, earthy and rich. Smooth finish. A fine IPA!
