16oz glass at Beer Revolution - a nitrogenated version of this brewery's famous stout.

This beer appears a mildly red-tinted black colour, with one skinny finger of puffy, very finely foamy, and well creamy tan head, which leaves some stellar webbed and frilly lace around the glass as it slowly sinks away.

It smells of lightly roasted caramel malt, bittersweet cocoa powder, rich cafe-au-lait, a tinge of anise spice, and very tame earthy, leafy, and floral green hop bitters. The taste is bready and doughy caramel malt, some candied dark orchard fruitiness, waning medium chocolate notes, day-old coffee, English cream, and more well understated earthy, musty, and dead floral verdant hoppiness.

The carbonation is actually quite laid-back in its quotidian frothiness, the body a decent medium weight, and generally rather smooth, with a genial creaminess there from the get-go. It finishes on the sweet side, but moderated by ash, fruit, and hops alike.

Overall, this is merely a smoother and creamier version of the base brew, which is always a good thing, I suppose, even if it makes me wonder at the reason for this entry here in the first place, i.e. does the gas component necessitate a new listing?

I was apprehensive about trying another beer from Deschutes, as I was strongly underwhelmed by both their Black Butte porter and their Red Chair Pale ale.

That said, DAMN this is good. if you see this offered, get it, pour it into a nice snifter, and enjoy. The creamy head lends texture to the taste, which is chocolate pudding with coffee.

Not much else needs said. I'm going to log out and finish my beer.

I've yet to have the Obsidian Stout but my interest is more than piqued as I found the nitro version to be very solid. As nitro versions go I'm adverse to them as the mass of nitrogen seems to wash away the true flavor. The feel and appearance are certainly enhanced but I want that deep char and roast. This delivers with a dry chocolate, burnt malt, char and roasted coffee flavor. All the while the appearance is gorgeous and it drinks incredibly sooth.

On tap at the brewery. Dark chocolate color, with a half finger head. Strong sticky lacing. Tasty dark chocolate, coffee, roasted malts. Perfect balance between sweet and bitter. Super creamy mouthfeel. A must try.

Pours a dark black with a brown nitro head. Smells of roasted malts, coffee, and mild chocolate. Tastes of bitter roasted malts, slightly burnt coffee, spices, and some mustiness. Very creamy mouthfeel with a medium-heavy body. Overall it's still a great beer. One of the better affordable stouts out there.

Appears dark as coal with a gorgeous tan head that hold for a long time. Though not overpowering, the aroma is distinct and of chocolate mostly. It sits lightly on the mouth and first allows for the taste of burntness. That gives way to chocolate and malt and finally a solid coffee flavor. It is not highly complex and its balance is a little off. But it is solid and allows for a pleasant drinking experience. Overall a great finish for an evening of good food and beer.
