We crack a pair, pouring into our Great Lakes pint glasses. The beer glows a golden amber coloring. It puts forth a solid one finger head of creamy, ghostly foam the color of pancake batter. It clings in wet, spotted sheets to the glasses, leaving lacing as such in its wake. The mildest chill haze is noted, but no sediment accompanies this. Carbonation appears to be robust. The aroma shows a serious side to the brew, with soured pale and wheaty malts going against grassy and resinously piney hops. Between the two is a simple blend of sap, wet metallics yeastiness, orange zest, sweeter orange juiciness, soft buttery diacetyls, toasty rye breadiness, vinyl plastic bite, coin, and flashes of lemon-lime soda sugariness. The taste to follow gives a brightly piney, soapy, and citric hop core cutting through crisp pale maltiness, raw barley and crystal malt bolster, glassy metallics, bittered nectarine fruitiness, under ripe strawberries, dried leafiness, curiously warming spiced bready sweetness of pumpkin, sand, walnutty bitterness, and cooling lactic creaminess. The body is distinctly medium, and the carbonation is rather active on the palate. Each sip gives nice slurp and smack, but with lesser cream and froth rolling behind it. Finishing pop is crisp, adding welcomed robustness to the finish. The mouth is otherwise left cooled, prickled, and neither really dried or oiled. The abv is appropriate, and the beer drinks back with ease.

Overall, we are finally getting around to reviewing this west coast stable of beerdom. We were first able to sample this about two years ago, on a road trip out to Colorado to visit some friends. Having never seen Deschutes before that moment, this became an obvious first choice when we hit that first brew stop. We happily and rapidly sipped that first six-pack at altitude, but neglected to take any notes worthy of rating. Fast forward to now, and we stumble across a second helping at a Meijer in Sandusky, Ohio, while visiting Cedar Point a month or so back. Here we are, with the meaningful rating baton in hand. This here is your quintessential no-nonsense pale ale. The nose comes across freshly and seriously, with no unnecessary inclusions or deviations. The flavoring is describable in much the same way, but is a bit more to the sweeter and more biscuity side of life. Fill in the gaps with straight quality, and that is really what you’re left with.

On tap at place not sure of rotation:
Beer pours an medium orange, clear with visible carbonation feeding small bubbles head. The head lasts and becomes foamy, lacing the glass well. Initial nose on a cold beer is mostly void, a light grain is about all. As the beer warms, a little citrus and pine come through.

Definitely need to get the beer away from ice-chest temps for the flavors to come out. Opening is sort of crisp, clean. A little fruit comes in, apricot, apple, little ruby grapefruit - but these meld with the opening more than taking over. The pine of the Cascade comes through in the middle, again melding more than overpowering. Feel is not quite medium, noticeable carbonation.

A nice balanced beer. I expected a bit more, and perhaps the beer was just old enough to be muted, because it didn't taste stale at all.
