Poured pitch black and had a brown colored head.roasted notes give a dark chocolate bitterness and espresso notes too. A light - medium mouthfeel, good depth of character for a non ba stout.

Not a bad stout. Maybe a smidge hoppy for my ideal stout. But it is still a delicious stout.

Got a 12 oz bottle of this to try. poured into one of my pint glasses, this beer pours a very dark brown, practically black color that's not at all interested in letting in any light at all. Has a fluffy looking, tan head that's over an inch thick when poured with good retention. Good lacing too. Aromas of very roasted malts with chocolate and caramel notes as well as bit of roasted black coffee goodness. The taste is pretty much the same, only much stronger than the aroma, with roasted malts with a bit of caramel sweetness, dark chocolate bitter sweetness, and black coffee bitterness along with some earthy hops that add some additional bitterness. The sweet cocoa notes really come out more as the beer sits and warms a bit. Has a slightly crisp, mainly smooth, and somewhat frothy and creamy, medium to full bodied mouthfeel with light to moderate carbonation. Also has a bit of a lactic like quality, which is a nice touch here that works well for this beer. Has a clean finish with a mix of a sweet, butter, and lactic like after taste. A good warm weather stout on this warm summer night here in Cleveland.

My favorite widely-available American stout. The roasty flavors are as fine as the tannins of a great Cab. The hops are fresh, green, and minty, setting off the semi-sweet chocolate and espresso flavors in perfect balance. Mouthfeel is full, almost creamy, but finishes clean and bitter. The benchmark craft stout.

Pouring from a 12 oz. bottle into a wine glass. Looks great. Dark brown on the pour and turns into a pitch black color in the glass. Has a light tan crown with little retention. The smell is roasty coffee and bitter chocolate. On the taste, the bitter chocolate moves up front while the roasty coffee plays the background. Has an espresso like bitterness that would work out better if it let the chocolate shine a little more. The mouthfeel is on the dry side leaving a roastiness linger in the mouth. Overall, not bad, not great, have definitely had better.

L: Deep, rich and opaque black body that is monolithic. There is a brown head that is frothy but dissipates quickly that leaves a little lacing as I drink.

S: Roasted coffee and malts and dark chocolate. Rich and balanced.

T: There's a good taste, but it is dominated by a very bold coffee flavor. A little more sweetness to balance this out would have been more to my liking as this is pretty blunt. However, it's far from bad tasting. But the more I drink, the more the unbalanced taste is a problem for me.

F: Maybe a little too thin and carbonated for my liking, but it is still hefty enough. It's consistent, refreshing and leaves a satisfying dryness after the drink.

O: The unbalanced taste that resembles old coffee is really the damning thing for this beer. That being said, this still manages to be a solid beer. A good look and smell, and a nice sweetness that just needed to be a little more present. This is a definite try for coffee lovers. I like coffee quite a bit, but this seemed a little too blunt and flat for my liking.

Poured into a narrow water glass: color is solid black, brown edges, tan head with fine bubbles, head presents 1/2 thick and dissipates to thin top.

Smell is roasted malt, very pleasant, light coffee and hint cocoa as well.

Taste is great - big roasty malt, moderate sweetness, good espresso and cocoa notes. Simple, yet delicious and really easy to drink.

Mouthfeel is moderate, pleasant carbonation, moderate sweetness.

Overall a great stout with fully roast and light sweetness with good cocoa and coffee/espresso notes.

Deschutes makes solid beers. This is another solid offering from them. Here goes:

A: Best thing about the beer. Pours a deep black with a massive, dark, lace-producing head. Great.

S: Charred and smoky burnt malt. Fair amount of cocoa and dark chocolate, but these scents are somewhat faint.. But beyond the smokiness and faint dark chocolate, there isn't much to it. Good nonetheless.

T: Follows the nose. Taste somewhat more complex, however, with dark fruits in the aftertaste to complete the cocoa. It's still very smokey, however, but this isn't a bad thing.

F: Solid, if a little light.

O: A good beer. Probably would've thought it was great six or seven years ago, when I began drinking craft beer. However, I think the evolution of the craft beer scene may have left Deschutes behind somewhat.

Pours black with almost no head, low carbonation and a small amount of light tan foam dots.

Smells of charred cedar, dry dark cocoa, and some sweetened cold brew with a touch of cream.

Starts off mildly sweet with chocolate and vanilla and white oak. Dry cocoa finishes with a mild bittering. Clean and direct. Almost a little one note I thought at first. After some time, caramel, vanilla and booze come out more pronounced after it warms up. Yeah, this one is better a little warmer.

Smooth texture with a creamy thickness. Finish is smooth and crisp and even a little salty leaving a dry thirsty sensation that encourages you to drink more.

I always thought of this beer as setting the standard. It executes the traditional style very well, but never stood out as innovative. Traditional or novel, it doesn't matter, this is delicious.

Pours almost black with a thick & pretty looking tan head. Smells sweet, dark chocolate & brown sugar. Tastes bitter, salty & then a hint of sweetness. It’s flavor is chocolate, hops, dark roasted malt & espresso. Feel is moderately thick & smooth. Interesting, a bit bitter for a stout.
