Very Good
Murder In The RyeMurder In The Rye
Notes: The base recipe came from Bourbon Murder, a Great American Beer Festival award winning Portland Pub brew. Murder in the Rye is a Strong Stout aged in Rye Whiskey Casks from Oregon Spirit Distillers. This malt forward beer offers flavors and aromas of spicy whiskey, vanilla, oak, roast, chocolate and caramel. With less than 24 hours between whiskey emptying and beer filling in the casks, this beer is heart-warming and whiskey-vicious!

22oz wax top bottle poured into a snifter

A- a huge hiss after lifting the cap, deep black color with a foamy, large bubble head foreshadows either over-carbonation, infection or both. The foamy head settles to leave a thin layer sticking around

S- aroma definitely has a bit of a sour note, tart cherry & balsamic vinegar, but not overpowering. Beyond the tartness, notes of dark roasted malt, spicy rye, woody oak & charred wood

T- plenty of barrel character up front with peppery rye barrel juice and spicy oak. Mid-palate gives notes of caramel, charred malt & chocolate. The finish brings out a slight tartness, with notes of cherry & vinegar which continues into the linger

M- medium body with medium-low carbonation leads to a slightly foamy mouthfeel that finishes a bit slick

O- obviously nat as the brewer intended, but luckily it hasn't completely turned at this point. Wish I would have opened this one sooner

Picked up a bomber after a brewery tour in late August for $22.00. Bottled on 12/16/2015. Guess this makes this a brewery turd?

Beer poured black with a nice tan head on the initial pour.

Nose is very nice, notes of the rye barrel come thru very strongly.

Taste is rye spiciness forward over a roasted malt backbone. Hopping is not quite there enough to balance the sweetness.

Feel is medium to full bodied and smooth.

Overall a very nice rye forward spiced beer that is a bit on the sweet side. Probably not worth the $22.00 quality wise but it was a fun beer to try nonetheless.

22oz bottle share courtesy of Buckeyeboy. Normal pour for a RIS, looks silky. Big aroma of roast malt, whiskey and wood. Taste is more of the same with some vanilla and molasses adding sweetness. Nice hearty burn accompanies the mix all the way down.

Bottle from Buckeyeboy.. Thanks Jeremy!! Pours not exactly black, but deeeeep dark walnut.. almost black for sure.. Nose is not as sweet as expected with cocoa and dark brown sugar with a enveloping warmth from the barrel and the residual whiskey.. like the rye, but could use a bit more malt to round things out.. this is a whiskey lovers' stout.
