A 22 fl. oz. black waxed bomber, bottled on 25th April 2016. Poured into a snifter glass.

Appearance: An amber orange brown colour with a thin tanned head that dissipated quickly to a ring around the glass while leaving some lacing.

Aroma: Sweet malt, caramel, dark fruit, prunes, fig, vinous, grape.

Taste: Sweet, vinous, overripe grape, dark fruit, prunes, raisin, caramel, oak, with red berry notes.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with moderate carbonation.

Overall: A touch sweet, but the Pinot Noir grape must and barrels give this sipper some nice interesting aroma and flavours.

2016 version
A: Poured into a snifter to a deep amber brown beer topped by a dense and slightly rocky finger of light tan head which fades slowly to a collar around the edge of the glass with minimal lacing
S: Smells of dark fruits with peppery spice, a little grape note, and some oak
T: Taste is caramel and pinot noir grapes with a little red fruit, dark fruits, peppery spice, and some french oak. On the swallow there's more caramel, oak, grapes, dark fruits and peppery spice.
M: This beer has a body which is on the medium side of things with a slightly syrupy feel. Carbonation is effervescent and prickly at times while the beer has a drying finish from the Belgian yeast.
O: Overall this is a pretty good beer. It has some interesting flavors and a nice amount of complexity and there aren't any obvious faults. It's also held up well to five years in the bottle and isn't showing any signs of off flavors.

Picked up a bomber from the Craft Beer Hop Stop 1-23-19 for $16.99. Bottled on 04.25.16. Consumed on 02-21-19.

Beer poured a burgundy brown with a nice tan head.

Nose is grape and jammy forward with some figs in the background.

Taste is sweet, grape and jammy forward with a nice alcohol warming initially. Finishes sweet and lacking dryness.

Feel is light bodied and very smooth.

Overall a nice brew but it was too sweet.

22oz bottle served in a little WABL glass. Appears to be dated 04/25/16, 11.8% abv.

Pours dark translucent brown with a medium head, with a medium amount of carbonation. Smell is Belgian dubbel -- dates and toffee and yeast.

Taste is similar, but with a strong wine grape vein running through it, not necessarily blending nicely.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied. Overall, it's pretty good.

Bottled 4/25/16, shared with rudzud

Pours a nice foamy fizzy head that fades at a quicker pace, not a ton of retention, decent lacing, very hazy maroon auburn color

Nose big sweet malt, toasted Belgian malt, mild tart acidic note, good mild red grape as wine notes, touch tasty and fruity esters, some woody tannins and vanilla oak, little sweet candy malt

Taste sweet candy malts, big oak, big toasted buttery oak, little vanilla, a bit of tart almost acidic note but not really sour mostly from the mild pinot grapes and vicious notes, phenol Belgian yeast notes, little yeasty, mild perfumey alcohol, so buttery, sticky sweet Belgian candy malt

Mouth is med to fuller bod a touch syrupy, nice fizzy carb, alcohol hidden well

Overall mixed, quite nice barrel, nose was a little muted and more acidic wine like, taste was fairly nice but a little too sticky sweet

Thanks to JLindros for sharing this. 2016 vintage.

A - Poured into a Kate the Great tulip a nice slightly hazy chestnut hue with a good fat one finger head that fades to leave light wisps.

S - Aromas of Belgian esters and a little bit of vinous grapes. Some light bubblegum as well.

T - Taste is similar to the nose with loads of Belgian esters. Light bubblegum with a little bit of vinous grape notes without much alcohol burn.

M - Mouthfeel is lightly carbonated, little flashes of esters and slightly sticky grapes.

O - Overall this was a solid enough Belgian ale. The esters are pleasant with good grape notes.

22oz (bottled 4/25/2018) into a tulip. Pours a mahogany w/ light beige collar and film.

Aroma is sweet and caramelly, oak, stone fruits, a hint of pipe tobacco and leather.

Taste follows nose. Sweet, smoky, bright, woody, earthy, spicy. Lots of complexity.

Mouthfeel is pretty heavy, thick. Coats the palate.

Overall an enjoyable, complex, contemplative barrel-aged beer.

Bottled April 2016 - so 2 1/2 years on this 22 oz beer - waxed cap. Pours out a slightly murky iced tea colour - golden brown - with minimal short lived cream coloured head. Aroma sweet caramel malt, toffee, dark fruits, fermenting grape. Taste sweet dark fruits, caramel, raisin, but definite grape/wine tartness - not sour just nicely sharp. Certainly get a little bit of the near 12% booziness but not especially hot - smooth medium full finish leaving that slightly winey tartness at the end. Great.

A real gem (again) from Deschutes. This one has spent two years in my cellar, so it has mellowed and blended a bit. Its deep honey brown color is very pretty and it shows just a little lacing on the glass (a Deschutes tulip). The aroma is fabulous. Rather like a nice port in its deep, dark fruitiness. Strong tones of fresh and fermented grapes and an alcohol twang. The taste takes all these elements, adds many more (raisins, a hint of leather, vanilla) and constructs a near perfect BSDA. It’s amazing. I don’t know how you take a beer aged in wine barrels and wind up with something that hits every note a great strong dark ale should have, but Deschutes has done it. Every note and more.

Appearance: Pours a clear mahogany with a frothy ecru head; splashes of lacing abound

Smell: Vinous plum, buttressed by caramel, oak, green apple and blackberry Brandy

Taste: Plum forward with earthy yeast tones; bread and caramel emerge before additional fruit tones of green apple and blackberry take over; grape skin bitterness, after the swallow, with oak and Brandy, in the finish

Mouthfeel: Medium to full body with moderate carbonation

Overall: One of the most unusual beers I have ever tasted and I was very much looking forward to seeing what this was like; I have to say, however, that I didn't love, particularly as it had a somewhat medicinal aspect

Thanks, Jonesy1981, for the opportunity
