Appearance - Dull light amber with low off-white head that persists, lots of lace

Aroma - Green , lightly grassy aroma with strong floral dimension along with some orange flesh, reminds me of some good 'ol cascade, nice bready malt aroma with a light crystal malt aroma as well, no fermentation character to speak of, a little hey / dead pine needle emerges,

Flavor - medium-light crystal malt sweetness, bracing medium-high bitterness on midpalate with a long, resinous but aromatic finish. Other specific hop flavors are difficult to latch onto - get brief hits of orange, pear, pineapple, pick up some berry and red apple ester, a little vanilla and cinnamon. Get some diacetyl. A little fusel in finish.

MF- Medium-bodied, medium carbonation, long sticky finish

Overall - Interesting concept for a beer to do a "german IPA" but for all the talk of munich malt and new wave german hops, if you blindfolded me and told me this was an old Sierra Nevada Pale Ale I wouldn't doubt it for a second. It really just tastes like a Cascade- forward old school pale /IPA. Def not lager - like at all and not particularly autumnal in my book.

Brief impression from a bottle:

The bready German leanings don't do this ostensible IPA any favours, but Deschutes nevertheless delivers a drinkable decent expression of the intended style.

Aroma is floral and bready, suggesting an even pairing of bready German malts and hops...but the IPA style is traditionally emphatic of hops over malts. Seems too sweet as a result, riddled with copper malt sweetness and a victim of low German yeast attenuation.

Tastes a bit soapy in addition to its floral and vaguely fruity hop notes. Pale malts and copper malts lend this ample sweetness.

Texture is medium-bodied, lightly coating, smooth, and wet. Has too much bready heft on the palate. Too filling to be refreshing, and less drinkable as a result. Slightly overcarbonated.

Drinkable but disappointing coming from one of the U.S.A.'s most reliable widely distributed breweries. The premise isn't great (a festbier crossed with an IPA?) and the execution isn't any better. I'm all for experimenting with German hops, but IPA might not be the style to play in if that's what you're going to do. I adore Deschutes, but this one is a head-scratcher.

Let the deconstruction of the festbier begin. Deschutes pulls the ingredients apart, rearranges their proportions to align more closely with the popular IPA and then substitute the traditional noble German hops with newer, more fruity, floral and aromatic German varieties for a taste that world has never experienced.

Hopzeit's rich amber hue is that of winter's honey and is then rounded with a creamy eggshell froth. Its scent is lemony, grassy, melon-like and flowery with a hint of toasty, nutty elegant breadiness. To taste, its the malts that stand tall with its toasted pecan, honey-like sweetness and a full poundcake creaminess.

And then the beer rearranges itself on the middle palate as the sweetness relaxes and the hops build into a lather. Floral aromas translate to grassy and fruity taste. Honeydew, orange, peach and lemon all play out with a bold tea-like flavor. Trending bitter, resinous and playfully stemmy, the peppery vegetation of Germanic hops highlights the hop's more lemongrass and bright parsley charm.

Medium-bodied but seeming fuller from the richer hops used, the beer also gives impressions of lightness because of its dry, resinous and slightly warm finish. The IPA is experimental to its core, resulting in a refreshing peppery crispness and an aftertaste of granola and grapefruit- Perfect for fall's roasted butternut squash and wilted greens.

Look is honey orange with an off white head. Nice lacing.

Smell is herbal hops up front some pine and with a nice balance of biscuity
malt.

Taste follows the nose. Fruity and nutty but balanced.

Feel is a little deceptive for 7%, but not too light.

Overall a nice offering from Deschutes that is different than anything out there. Truly an Autumn IPA.

Appearance: Amber, particles in suspension, good head.

Smell: Floral, bready aroma.

Taste: Spicy, herbal, bready, with some fruity, apple-like notes.

Overall: A very different take on an IPA. Seems to be like a mix of octoberfest and IPA, but using heaps of spicy, herbal hops instead of citrusy. Interesting to try and well made, but not one I'll probably return to.

Like the idea, not wild about the execution, which was a surprise given deschutes keen ability to ride the seasons in their work. The caramel malty base was solid, but the hops chosen creating infighting among the flavors in a muting effect. I would got some pine and some caramel, but then it would morph into a maple leaf. Basically it has a funky vegetable taste in the mid-taste. Smell is not skunky but in the neighborhood, sory of like a macro, and yes I checked, it is a fresh beer. Not a do over in fall or ever.

The damn ragweed this time a year takes away from my drinkin of the good stuff...it's a damn shame.Anyways Iam braving it today.Pours into an impy nonic a deep rich burnt orange with a full one finger off white head that sticks like glue to the glass as it settles into a frothy mass.A mix of piney hops and caramel/nutty malts in the nose,a nice combo.Slightly toasty with caramel malts really standing out upfront on the palate, some mild astringency going on it gets on the drier side in the back end, almost a saline-like edge to it.A solid beer but the flavors are a little awkward for me.

12 oz bottle. Pours slightly hazy copper orange with a big rocky off white head that retains well and laces the glass some.

The aroma is sweet grainy cola malts with some nutty fruit.

The flavor is sweet grainy biscuit malt with some grassy fruity hops. The mouthfeel is medium to full bodied with low carbonation.

Overall, an OK malty IPA.

Pours clear, orange-tan in color with 1/3 inch head. Taste is bready marzen with floral hop and a spicy/sweet aftertaste. Light bodied, medium-light carbonation, and overall slightly bitter...Makes for a delicious fall sipper. Different from other Dechustes ipas...very marzenesque...mixed with an ipa.

Hopzeit is a lovely amber color, and probably has just enough hops to separate it from an 'amber ale'. It has a healthy malt profile that I find works great with rich and spicy foods (say pizza or burrito's :-)
It is reminiscent of those sweet & hoppy winter seasonal's but with much less of a bite.
As is often the case the closer this beer came to room temperature the more the flavors melded together giving a spicy taste, and a good clean finish.
I am very happy with Hopzeit and sorry it is only a seasonal.

German malt and hop aroma. The taste has a nice malt complexity of biscuit, bread, dark fruit and caramel. The hops balance everything out with some noble hop characteristics but with a stronger bitterness and level of citrus. Quite dry with a smooth mouthfeel. This is basically a German-Style IPA, and a nice alternative to actual Marzens.

Copper colored with a massive two inch creamy tan head. There's a light trace of sediment found within the body. It smells like an Octoberfest with just a kiss of herbal German bittering hops. I'm tasting amber malt with a copper like bitterness and some dull but noticeable German herbal hops. The mouth fairly smooth and crisp.

Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into an IPA glass.

Appearance: Pours a fairly hazy amber orange. Moderate amount of bubbles and a big three finger off white head which slowly settles into a thin creamy layer.

Smell: An earthy and toasty balanced aroma of earthy hops and caramel malt. Earthy German hops with some hints of grass, pine, and spice. Citrus hop hints of orange, grapefruit, lemon, and melon. Malt hints of caramel, grains, and biscuit with yeast. A very solid aroma.

Taste: Like it smells, an earthy and toasty balanced taste of earthy hops and caramel malt. German hop notes of grass and pine with some spicy notes. Citrus hop notes of grapefruit, orange peel, melon, and lemon. Sweet malt notes of caramel, grains, cracker, and biscuit along with some yeast. A pretty nice taste.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with a moderate amount of carbonation. Somewhat oily and very smooth.

Overall: A weird but pretty tasty mix of a Marzen and IPA. Nice blend of hops and malt sweetness.
