Doing this blindly. I have four variants of the Abyss. Scotch barrel, Rum barrel, tequila barrel & brandy barrel. My wife chose one and put it in a bag where I couldn't see which it was.
So pouring this from a 22 oz. bottle into a snifter this beer pours out black as night with no highlights whatsoever. It forms close to a pinky width of creamy caramel/mocha colored crown. (4.25)
The smell has a tropical like alcohol accenting the chocolate layers that are prominently present. You can smell the booze all the way through, with the layers of chocolate and dark fruit underneath it. (Almost a fresh lime like spritz) almost wondering if it's the tequila one from the smell. (4.25)
The taste comes in with a bitter chocolate element. Almost like bakers chocolate bouncing off of a dry barrel presence with a tropical kick. Dark fruit still present in the form of some raisins as it warms up. (4.5)
The mouthfeel is roasty bitterness and dry barrel tangling together all the way through while providing a full body. (4.5)
Overall, this is a very enjoyable drink. I love the complexity and the way the elements are all tangling together to make a wonderful and unique drinking experience. (4.5)

From the tropical notes and light fruit kicks in this it's hard for me to decide from Tequila or Rum. But I'm gonna go with tequila based on some of the lighter fruit notes that resemble lime to me. Let's see!
Anddd... I was wrong! It's Rum!
Oh well. Very fun and enjoyed the experience!
Bottled on 9/15/17. It ends up being one of the best Rum barrel aged Stouts I've had to this point. Maybe that is because it works so much with the original complexity of The Abyss and doesn't overpower or thin it out, but adds to it. Cheers!

Beautiful dark beer, good head production.

Rum noticeable on the nose, brown sugar, molasses, licorice, coffee, chocolate.

Creamy but a touch thin and sour. Super strong molasses notes, almost overwhelming everything else, likely amplified by the rum. Licorice and brown sugar, some heat.

The beer is a 2016 Vintage. Peeled all the black wax off the bottle and crack open the cap. Rum came out with a little mist. Gentle pour on the beer produced a two finger head with fair retention. The head is dark brown and frothy. The color of the beer is SRM 40 black and opaque The head left no lacing on the glass. The beer is serious.

The aromas in the beer are rum, sugar cane, anise, dark roasted malt, dark chocolate, raisins, molasses, coffee, burnt sugar, char, wood, vanilla, earthiness, stone fruit, and alcohol.

The flavors in the beer are rum anise, dark chocolate, molasses, smoky, dark roasted malt, burnt sugar, char, vanilla, wood, earthiness, raisins, stone fruit, espresso, citrus, caramel, and toffee.

The mouthfeel of the beer is chewy and flavorful.

The body of the beer is full, low carbonation, and full finish.

The beer is powerfully strong yet refined. The Rum does come through but balanced. The beer has harmony. I read other reviews, I differ with reviewers. The beer is fabulous.

2017 bottle enjoyed a few weeks ago.
Dark inky black with a thin mocha head that dissipates rather quickly. Lots of rum and harsh alcohol on the nose. and in the flavor. Roasty chocolate is mowed down by the onslaught of rum and higher alcohols. Faint cherry and vanilla but honestly I can't get past the rum.

pours black; aroma is chocolate, molasses and too much rum; taste is really good (chocolate, vanilla, molasses, cherry) with less run than in the smell; feel is creamy.

After not caring much for last year's variants, I have to say, the rum and tequila variants this year are outstanding.

A: Typical Abyss. Black, looks more viscous than the regular. Gorgeous tan head, with sticky lacing.

S: chocolate, slightly astringent rum/alcohol.

T: tons of chocolate. A bit of rum and vanilla up front. Cherry very slightly mixes in mid-palate. Chocolate continues through the end, mixing with a growing rum influence. Outstanding.

M: this is the most viscous Abyss I've had yet. Sticky, smooth, creamy. Yum.

O: this is an impressive big beer. The main problem I had with the scotch and brandy variants last year (I thought I would love them) was the alcohol heat. Those beers were unbalanced. Rum and tequila this year are near perfect molds of barrel and beer. The cocoa aspect seems much increased this year. Highly recommended.

Poured from the bottle into a snifter glass.

Deep, rich, and cocoa dark mocha lathery forming head. Easily making two fingers with dark fine retention, and thick milkshake consistency. Opaque, slightly muddy body, nearly full black but with tinges of red. Great aggressive looking brew.

Killer nose. Excellent touches of soft rum soaked wood, a bit of molasses and dark chocolate. Thick controlled booze mixing with roast coffee almost giving brandy like quailities. Very fine stuff.

Palate takes a good turn. For a 10 month old brew, very light bodied, but rum barrels seem to do that in my experience. Sill excellent qualities abound. Cocoa and dark chocolate powder all over, with a large mollasses tang with touches of light rum like booze. Finishes with a ganache mix of chocolate rum and soft almost crispy coffee flavors.

Abyss is one of my all time favorites, but Rum aging has taken away while enhanced some of the base beers excellent qualities. Still it's hard to find much fault, but there are variants I enjoy and also even the original I think much more.
