Poured from 500ml bottle into glass. Bottling date marked on label as '3/23/18'. Wax dipped bottle.
Murky, pale gold colored body. White, fizzy head immediately disappears, and leaves a partial, very thin ring. No lacing.
Aroma is tart lemon, along with leather, tobacco, slight funk, and oak tannins.
Taste follows with mostly tart/slightly sour lemon, along with pear and apple, which is made more complex with the leather/tobacco/blanket funk. Additional flavors of the oak barrels.
Medium mouth feel, which is quite dry. Good carbonation.
Blended tart/sour beer with citrus and fruit tree taste, that is made more complex with the yeast funk that yields the leather, tobacco, and blanket flavors.

Hazy amber-tan color. Short head that quickly collapsed to a patchy skiff, leaving no lacing. Couldn't see many bubbles rising, but it was a bit too hazy to see much.

Smells of sour funk, with an emphasis on the sour. Some cut lawn grass. Swirling the glass kicked up something from the mint family, some light citrus, a touch of barnyard, and a host of minor scents.

Taste is very tart but and lightly sweet. The funk and sour combine to taste like some unnamed tropical fruit (passion fruit mixed with feijoa?). Some fresh ground peppercorn notes add to the flavor around the middle. The aftertaste is of the tropical fruit turning to a sour funk. A little bitters show up to enhance the fruit.

Foams up quickly but doesn't feel very carbonated. A fuzzy, astringent dry mouth feel shows up after swallowing. It's like getting a pile of tannins only with the aftertaste.

Finally a North American beer that comes close to a Belgian Gueze. The only way to become more authentic would be to collect a culture from a brewery in Pajottenland. The sample I had was bottled almost exactly 2 years ago. I'm curious what is considered the optimum time to spend in the bottle before drinking; i.e. did the brewery cellar it for 20 months and then release it, or is it stale dated.

Thanks to leftpaw for bringing this out, consumed October 2018. Didn't even know this beer existed before he cracked it.

Pours a mostly orange and amber colored brew. 1/3" white head, I mean, it looks like golden blend to me. Nice. Has a citrus edge to it in the nose. Mostly lemon, but not exclusively. Not getting the otherwise frequently referenced fruitiness of this one.

Taste is more of the lemon sour power with a drying woody mouth feel on the back end. Interesting they made this 8%. Not sure why. Could be a better beer without the alcohol heat. Nice astringent wood, lemon and pear feels to it. Some graininess is perceptible in a minor way. Restrained acidity that is well done.

It didn't quite come off like the commercial tug job (gueuze) pulled at, but for a wild ale, its pretty well done without relying on being extreme other than the alcohol. The barrel had more of a white wine feel to it. I liked it, but at $15/500ml, I dunno if I would buy at that price point.

I tried this at the Roanoke location. It poured a clear golden with thin white head that left some lace. The scent had tart pear notes. The taste was very sour tart leaning....way too much for me. The mouthfeel was lighter in body with good carbonation. Overall its a decent sour....just not my style.

500ml capped/waxed bottle served in a pair of SIP Fest 2020 snulips. Dated 3/23/18. No longer remember where I acquired this.

Until the sediment came out, it was a pretty golden color, nice and clear, with a medium to small head that has surprisingly strong retention. Light carbonation. Smell is tart, lemon and oak, very nice.

Taste is similar -- tart lemon, oak, woody tannins, medium bitterness, something really appealing about this.

Mouthfeel is medium, almost fluffy, approximates the mouthfeel I associate with Cantillon. Overall, this is really good.

16.9oz/500mL bottle purchased at Pilgrim's in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, a couple months ago. According to the label, it was bottled on March 23, 2018.

Poured into a big Tripel Karmeliet glass, this was initially a clear gold, before darkening to a chill-hazed amber. Good sized , creamy white head that dropped fairly quickly but was easy to agitate back to life. Decent lace.

Spicy, fruity, and a little bit vinegary in the nose. The fruitiness reminds me a bit of a white wine.

The vinegary aspect is much bigger in the taste, but it's extremely well-balanced with the other aspects noted above in the nose. The sweet , pear-like fruitiness is perfectly matched with the sour, acidic vinegar notes and the peppery spiciness of the yeast. Finishes with a crisp, dry note. No sign of the relatively high alcohol content.

Body is somewhere between light and medium. Coating, almost cidery mouthfeel.

My first geuze. I'm really digging this. Wish there were more available in my area. Another great beer from Deschutes.

Picked up a 500 ml bottle from TW Arrowhead 10-3-18 for $14.99. Bottled on 3-23-18; received at TW 6-13-18; consumed 1-9-19. Cold stored since purchase.

Beer poured a deep golden with a nice white head that has some nice hang time.

Nose is lemony with some horse blanket. Touch of sour is pleasant.

Taste is sweet tarts with a touch of pear and apple. Malt base is light. Horse blanket from i am guessing brett makes for a delightful sipper.

Mouthfeel is awesome! Light bodied and delicate each sip is pleasant!

This was a splurge beer and i was not sure what i was getting into given i am a neophyte to the gueuze style of beer. Overall i enjoyed this much more than i thought. Totally dig the tartness and the body of this brew!

Appearance: Pours amber with just a slight haze; the head rises to a finger or so, leaving spotty lacing behind

Smell: As funky as funk can be - stinky cheese, leather, oak, pear and peppery spice

Taste: Pear and white pepper forward, with a lemon vinegar aspect emerging; increasingly funky, through the middle, with leathery, oaky phenols overwhelming; stinky cheese flavors filter into the finish

Mouthfeel: Medium body with moderate to high carbonation

Overall: A really impressive Gueuze; I knew Deschutes was good but this is a stunner

Inspired by the historic ales of Brussels, a strong lambic-like character is born at Bend. Truly inspired by Belgian sour ale technique, artistry and respect, Deschutes Brewery cuts no corners when building, blending and brewing the style in their own unique way.

Pale straw and cast in a mild and yeasty haze, the spritzy ale builds a tall, arid and loose froth that holds its structure well. Its rounded and rustic scent teases the nose with a must filled blend of weathered citrus, saddle leather, sea air, worn oak and hay. As the malts hit the tongue, the pop of carbonation keeps the confectioner's sugar introduction short and subtle.

As the expression of carbonation pushes the malts off of the tongue, the middle palate is similarly concise and swift, leaving the bulk of flavors to be best appreciated in finish and in a retro-olfactory experience. Grapefruit, orange, pineapple, lime, and green apple all carry a dried and dehydrated fruit character along with the vinous spice of cider and white wine. Most of the earthen aromas are scant in taste, leaving an oaky, nutty and dry hay flavor on the late palate for complexity and balance.

Its mild and grassy bitterness keeps the light bodied sour ale supported and balanced. Trending dry, crisp, clean and briskly sour, a sense of high refreshment overcomes the senses and prove to add an effortless mouthfeel and digestibility without compromising flavor or depth. A short afterglow of brettanomyces heavy mossiness comes with a pep of sourdough and a sweetheart candy resolve.

Dark saturated orange with a slight haze, pours with a finger of foam that lasts for the first couple sips. Minimal spotty lacing, no surface skim.

Aroma is oddly sweet, light green apple and lemon, a little briny.

Tart green apple and lemon acidity with a slight sweetness at first, vague oak in the dry finish. Light to medium bodied, spritzy with ample carbonation. Not a whole lot of depth or barrel complexity, but pleasant enough.

“American Gueuze” is an oxymoron, it’s admirable to see Deschutes accurately acknowledge the Belgian tradition as their inspiration, and not pretending to be something it's not.

Poured into a Trillium glass a pretty nice slightly hazy dark golden yellow/orange color, pretty nice carbonation, with a pretty nice small/quick/fizzy white head, which leaves some sticky lacing behind. The nose is malty, yeasty, with some citrus, coriander, pepper, nice tartness, funky. The taste is pretty nice, malty, yeasty, with a nice citrus note, some coriander, pepper, nice tartness, nice funky. Medium body, ABV is hidden pretty nicely. Overall, a pretty tasty brew. Nice to see it around here.

Dark bronze; white Balsamic, honey, stone fruit + washed rind cheese; wheat bread, dried apricot, a blast of horse blanket, some pear juice, + a lot of anise + herb to end.

Bottle from Market of Choice.

A hazy orange with a dense white head with good retention and lacing, this looks decent. The nose, though, delivers. Funky with preserved lemon, pepper, a little bit of straw, earth, and a noticeable acetone character that lends an unwelcome sharpness to the nose. A juicy sour sweetness is present as well, lemony but slightly different. The palate opens sour with lots of preserved lemon, mildly fermented with a cooked sweetness present. Thankfully, the acetone notes are much more muted on the papate. Straw, earth, a mild melon note, a little pepper, a touch of clove are present. The occasional sip also has some cereal character Noticeably sweet, and while not excessive, when coupled with the high ABV, it does detract from the beer. Medium light in body and highly carbonated, this beer is solid, exceptional considering it's the first beer of the style from Deschutes.
