2013 poured to snifter, my third year I was lucky enough to come across The Abyss, this year I found three and intend to age one 6 months to a year. This review is "unaged"

Deschutes "Obsidian Stout" is one of my all time favorite black beers, "The Abyss" strikes me as a gloriously fancy and muscled up version of Ob. Opaque black, nice dark tan head that lays down quickly, plenty of sticky lacing. Aroma is bold and complex: dark roasty malts, boozy, oak and wine lingering. Taste is similar... plenty of hops and dark malt to offset any sweetness, a bit bitter when cold and the balance does transition to sweeter as it warms. Big and boozy and roasty, not overly whiskey, so the other elements aren't swamped out. Vanilla and dark chocolate notes come out as the party continues. Mouthfeel is perfect for a big burly dark: syrupy thickness slaked by the hot alcohol, and plenty of carbonation to sharpen the tongue.

Probably not everyman's brew, but for those of us who live for the dark, The Abyss is top notch, setting a standard that is rarely matched. I'd give it "5" across the board, but I'll bet it improves even more after additional aging, so I have to leave room for that!

Serving Type- In to a Tulip Glass from Tap

Appearance- Black as night, it almost sucks the light out of the room, very little head, the head is coco brown, one of the darkest beers around

Smell- Typical Imperial Stout smells, chocolate, roasted notes, roasted coffee, molasses, hints of Barrel aging.

Taste- Smooth, dark roasted chocolate, roasted dark coffee, molasses hints of charred barrel aging,

Mouth Feel- Smooth, thick Imperial Stout

Overall- An amazing beer if you are able to get it on tap do yourself a favor and do so...but it does do better in a bottle after a few years of aging to figure itself out. But one of the best beers on the PLANET period...
