Pours brown with an off-white head. The aroma is a mix of vinegar and very tart cherries. Definitely a very good aroma. The flavor is also heavy on the cherries with some funk as well. It is definitely a sour beer, but not as sour as the aroma led me to believe it would be. You also get some oak and vanilla in the flavor. Medium to high carbonation and very drinkable.

vintage 2008

pours mahogany brown and red with a light cream head. nice retention.

lots of vinegar with light hints of merlot and sour cherry. the scent alone makes my lips pucker.

lots of cherry, lots! not nearly as tart as the scent but very flavorful. cherry mixes well with light oak and light vanilla. a bit creamy. this really has mellowed out. maybe a hint of vinegar.

very creamy, medium to light carbonation and a bit dry.

too good and too easy to drink. not hint at all of the 9% ABV. hands down the best cherry flavor i have ever had.

2008 version. 22 ounce bottle poured into a tulip. Comes in at 9%.

A-Pours a really interesting brownish-red color. It has a one and a quarter finger off white head that collapses to nice encrusting foamy layer. It has lots of active bubbles and leaves some nice lace.

S-Really nice sour/tart nose. Sour cherries are there, but not as strong as when it was originally released. Also notes of oak and detectable vinegar.

T-It is not mouth puckering when it first hits. There is a definite sour cherry flavor throughout. The sourness hits more towards the end of each sip. There is some evident sweet malt from the base beer along with some funk. Oak flavor lasts in between each sip.

M-Medium bodied and extremely crisp and dry from a lot of fizzy carbonation.

D-The abv is well hidden. Tasting good 16 months after it was first released.

As noted above, this beer has begun to lose some of its initial cherry flavor and has balanced out nicely. Really looking forward to the next batch in 2010.

2008 edition. Poured into the last glass that I was offered this fine beer during SF Beer Week- Jupiter/Triple Rock snifter.
Cherry red brown in appearance, with a smallish off white head. Held up to the light, this reminds me of a 12 year Pappy Van Winkle glass. Very striking.
Musky aroma, cherry, just right. A little oak, a little whiff of cow poo and wet hay.
Tart up front with a nice smooth transition into a little sour. Just right with a little dryness. Chunk of Brett stings the tongue. All the components of an exceptional take on a classic style. Oak and sour lingering on the palate, dry and nice.
Slow and long good as it gets.

Appearance: Pours a cloudy russet color with a thick head that retains exquisitely and sheets the tulip with lace

Smell: Tart cherries, oak, green apple, peaches and a hint of vanilla

Taste: Fresh peaches, up front, though it is just a moment before the tart cherry and green apple flavors arrive to overwhelm the palate; the oaky aspect figures into the profile before the swallow, but what ensues is a surprisingly sweet character and yeasty funk (vanilla included) that lingers underneath the sour flavors

Mouthfeel: Medium body with moderate, but prickly carbonation; somewhat creamy, nevertheless

Drinkability: An outstanding achievement by the brewery - not previously known for their sours

Note: I preferred the 2008 to the much boozier 2010, which was a bit overwhelming

Had this a couple times since the release and still have a bottle in the cellar, but this review is from notes on 10/2.

Pours brownish with burnt orange and ruby highlights shining through. The acidity of this beer prevents a good head formation.

Aroma opens with a sharp acidity, red wine vinegar. The cherries seem to have faded a bit since the last time I had this, but still lend a nice fruit note. Spicy esters and vanilla-wood.

Taste is highly acidic. Medium complexity. Vinegar notes are abundant. Low yeast character. Some spiciness and vanilla oakiness.

Prickly medium-high carbonation, starts sour and finishes with a spicy bite. Great drinkability considering its ABV and high acidity, although I'm a bit biased for beers of this style. I liked this better fresh because the fruitiness of the cherries helped to balance out some of the acidity.

Appearance: Ruby red with a big brownish head. Head lingers and never fully disappears. Left some lacing in its wake.

Smell: Big oak and cherry aroma's. Tart. Vinegar.

Taste: Might be the most sour beer I've had so far, at least at the start. As it warms the tartness subsides considerably and a mellow sweetness comes forward, intertwined with a dark fruit character that tastes mostly of cherry's. A little funk mixed with the sourness.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with what I'd call medium carbonation. This beer finishes with more of a velvety smoothness than other Oud Bruin's I've had, but I like it. Flavors linger instead of the tartness, which is also different but enjoyable.

Drinkability: No hint of the 9%. If you can survive the initial blast of sour and funk at the beginning, the rest of the slightly warmer bottle is a delight.

Great beer. So glad I started trying sours beers.

A- Amber with ruby highlights when held up to the light. Light tan head of about half a centimeter, with light foam sticking around for a while

S- Vinous, with dark fruit, soft oak, and a light tartness.

T- Much better than last time I tried it, about 8 months ago. The taste is also very wine-like. The cherries seem to have receded into the rest of the flavors to add complexity rather than in-your-face cherry-ness. There is rounded vanilla/buttery (not diacetyl) oak, dark juicy fruits, and a faint tartness. A bit of raw oak lingers in the finish. Not a sign of the relatively high ABV.

M- Rich and smooth, but still carbonated. This is quite nice, and suits the beer well.

Drinkability- The way I see drinkability is not "can I drink a few of these" but do I enjoy the time drinking it, or am I forcing the last of it down (like I did with my 1/3 of the bottle of Bourbon Angel's Share I split). This beer is not even close to a chore to polish off.

Overall, I am glad I saved a bottle this long, and wish I had another. I really did not enjoy the last bottle I cracked, so if you've been holding on to these and have a few, now is a great time to break that wax.

I drank this from a 22 oz bottle into a rochefort glass.

The beer is a watery amber, brown with red highlights. The head is light brown rises about a finger but fades quickly leaving light carbonation on the rim of the glass. The lacing is very weak.

The aroma is medium in strength, represting some nice sour notes. There are light blackberries, vinegar and oak. Vinegar dominates the most.

The taste is much to light for my liking. There are very small vinegar and sour notes, but mostly I taste tea. There is an unpleasant funky sour after taste.

The beer is heavy and full and sticks to your mouth for several seconds.

This is not very drinkable. I could probably drink a bottle if I split it with someone but this would be the last time I'd drink this. I would not search this out or recommend getting it unless your a big time sour fan and just want to try it.

A: Deep brownish red with a rather small tanned head that actually stays on for a while before settling. Some lacings.

S: The smell is quite interesting. There is a prominent mix of tart vinegar and clean brett aromas going on with notes of really funky barnyard, cherry tannins, red wine-like grapes, grass, yeast and wet wood. Hints of oaky vanilla. A complex small, but slightly too edgy.

T: The taste is not as complex nor as interesting as the smell would have you to believe. It's actually quite sweet with prominent malty flavors of caramel coupled with pleasant tart fruit aromas (cherries and grapes). Complementary, somewhat clean, brett aromas and notes of mud, oak, grass and vanilla. Hints of yeast. The finish has a mild bitterness to it, brett, sweetish alcohol and dry cherry notes. I think it would have benefited from less alcohol flavors.

M: Medium, almost full body, and medium carbonation which is not how I want a Flanders Oud bruin to be - I prefer them with more carbonation. It's actually almost smooth and sticky.

D: A fairly good attempt at a style that seems hard to master outside of the boarders of Belgium. It's slightly too heavy and big to be really good. The additions from the cherries are really nice though.

Bought several of these when they came out, never drank one. In the sour mood tonight so I popped this one open.

A: Pours a nice deep garnet hue, small fizzy head. No retention or lace which is fine for the style.

S: Very tannic, black cherry skins, sour black cherry pulp, oak, and vinegar.

T: Wow this really is wonderful. Nice light tartness. Mostly tart black cherry with light tannic qualities. The oak is there but subdued like the tartness. Beneath there is a hint of sweetness, like a splash of New Glarus Belgian red was added. I reallly like this beer.

M: On the lighter side of medium. Crisp, zippy carbonation, very light dryness in the finish.

D: Awesome. Nice light tartness, tanic wine qualites with a touch of oak and sweetness. Now sure how this one was when it was released, but it is drinking world class right now.

Appearance: Hazy, tea-brown colored brew with a frothy golden head. The head is made up of tight bubbles. Light carbonation flows freely.

Smell: Distinct vinegar presence, hints of cherries and oak. Funky yeast aroma.

Taste: Delicious brew that is not as acidic as it smells. Mild flavor of oak. A bit dirty and earthy throughout, with a good funky aftertaste that lingers.

Mouthfeel: Med body. Vibrant carbonation adds fullness. Semi-dry.

Drinkablity: Very drinkable brew that creeps up with its potency. Fits the style well, but has something indescribable that makes it unique. I enjoyed the bitter finish.

2008 Vintage enjoyed 09/10/09.

A dazzling, blushed shade of pomegranate that clearly adores having the light shined onto it. It gleams and it sparkles and it casts blood red tones onto my hand. Its complexion is clean but clarity is diluted. Most of the tapioca-like foam dissipates but a yarn sized coil continues to envelop the beer. It splatters jelly-fish shaped patterns of lace onto the glass.

The aroma kind of smells like a classic Flanders Oud Bruin... and it kind of doesn't. For the most part it does share all the charm of the vintage Belgians: the tannic mildewed oak, the tart long-since fermented cherries, the slightly vinegar-like acidity and everything and anything else that goes into producing that rustic, complex, distinctive lure of the style.

Where it departs, only ever so slightly, is the noticeable Brett character. I know full well the time-honored barrels used to age authentic Flemish ales are replete with critters and wild bacteria, but this aroma exhumes the lively, extremely bready, unmistakable character of Brettanomyces that I've come to readily associate with a handful of American brewers.

No matter - it is a most welcome addition. These funky little yeast renegades really liven up the taste and add an even further degree of complexity to the already bewildering cast of flavours that includes: wild honey, artisan balsamic, citrus zest, nut-encrusted pastries, sour cherries, tannin-rich oak and strong undertones of chocolate and red wine.

The alcohol is listed as 9% on the bottle and 11% according to the brewery's press release. It doesn't really matter, as far as I can tell this isn't a decimal over 6%. The Brett becomes a little overly drying once some warmth gets into it but the acidity seems to know its boundaries. Clearly, this was touched by the hands of a very skilled brewmaster.

It takes a beer like this to remind us that brewing can be a ritual suffused with beauty and spirituality. I suppose anything inoculated with wild yeasts, infused with cherries for a year and then aged in pinot and cabernet barrels is expected to be unique but Deschutes not only pulled off the traditional Belgian style extraordinarily, they also added their own trademark American stamp that made this something much more than a mere replication.

22 oz bomber I got from Wetpaperbag in the LNBA BIF. Been looking forward to this beer for quite a while. Figured I would celebrate the job with this bottle. Served up in a snifter.

A: Pours a dark, burnt orange in body. Almost a dark caramel, but there is just a bit more orange kicking around in here. The body has a good amount of haze to it, I can't see through to the other side. I got about a finger or so of light tan colored head off the pour. The head disappears slowly, falling down to a thin ring. For such a thin ring, it really throws up some good lace and coverage. Lace is web like, stringy. Off to a pretty good start.

S: All things start out here with some sour apple and cherry aromas. This is quickly followed by some nice funkiness. Lots of dusty, wet barnyard smells. Slight touch of vinegar on the nose. Touch of sour and tart floating around. This beer has some dynamic qualities here. My only wish is that some of the aromas were a bit more distinguishable.

T: This is nice for sure. Once again we start things off with some sour and tart fruits. Dark cherry meat along with some sour granny smith apple meat and skin. There is a light red wine quality, almost tannic. Funkiness comes in and plays almost a perfect role. We have wet and dusky wood, wet leather, and a touch of horseblanket. There is an oak character bringing forth some vanilla creaminess as well. This is pretty much the only sweet character in here and it calms down these tart and sour flavors. Everything blends together nicely. Greatly crafted flavors.

M: The body is a nice medium. Carbonation is medium as well, bringing an airy quality to this. The feel has a slight creaminess to it as well, maybe fluffy. Maybe its the year on it, but the 9% ABV is not even detectable. For having the tart and sour flavors, this beer is pretty damn clean and refreshing, not leaving much of aftertaste to be found.

D: This beer is damned drinkable. The flavors are very tasty and refreshing. This beer cools, rather than warms. Refreshes and tests the palate. I suppose it could be more dynamic, but it has a beautiful subtlty. Sadly this beer has gone much quicker than expected and remains my only bottle. Will absolutely have to track down some more bottles of this. Fantastic brew.

Pours a dark ruby with a large white head. The smell is one of sweetness with a little bit of tart fruit coming in, mostly cherries. Hints of wood. Some slightly-roasted malt and accompanying sweetness. The taste is most prominent in the tart fruit department, with a bit of an alcohol bite. The mouthfeel is medium with a good amount of carbonation.

Poured into Ommegang Chalice

Pours 1 finger of slight tan head. Decent retention with some splattered lace. Color is hazed light burnt caramel.

Aroma: Vinegar/acidic a lot of wild notes, oak, sour cherries, very tart and mouth watering.

Taste: The wood flavors some out a lot more here with some vanilla. This beer has a huge vinegar taste. Very acidic with some lemon notes. Sour cherries.

Mouthfeel: Very tart and mouth puckering. Medium bodied with a decent amount of carbonation. Ends with pretty clean vinegar flavored aftertaste.

Overall, this beer seems to have a little too much vinegar to it. It is good and represents the style pretty well, but I would like to try this one fresh and reevaluate.

2008 bottle thanks to paytoplay. Pours a really hazy red-brown with a small light tan head. Vinous and woody, with some light spice notes in the background. Smells somewhat tart with lactic notes and quite a bit of mustiness. Taste is a bit sour, again with lactic notes. Heavy oak with a lot of earthiness. Definite Brett notes. Lots of cherry and fruit. Very intense. Nice full body. Really impressive effort from Deschutes.

Batch one, red wax sealed bomber poure into a tulip glass. Thanks to my buddy Wilson in Portland for the case.

Pours a mysterious clouded brown with touches of red. Head is a light sandy tan, moderate to small size with dense pearly bubbles and outstanding lacing for a sour. The primary aroma I am picking up is definitely the funk! Tart and catty with sour cherries.

I have been lucky enough to sample this beer fresh, after about six months, and we are now closing in upon a year in a month or two. Thel last time I sampled this brew I noiced an increasing sour presence, and as of right now it feels like the funk is really taking precedence. I was ecstatic to try this beer when I heard Deschutes was making an Oud Bruin, and every time I taste how this beer is alive and ever evolving.

The Dissident's flavors are funkcentric at the moment. A mild-moderate sourness tempered with heady cherry funk is central. It is somewhat catty and lactic. If you are into funk this thing is just getting better and better, though personally I prefer a more lacto sourness that was evident earlier in the year. Medium body with a medium smooth effervescence. The carbonation is delightful, though could be a bit more prickly.

I wonder where this beer will go next. It was drinking great for me when it was first bottled, and even better after six months. Now it is getting more funk in the complexity arena. It is a bottle I would recommend sharing, but I am enjoying the ride.

Pours a dark ruby color with a brown tint and a large fluffy of white head.

Scent of sweet and tart cherries, oak, a hint of vanilla, and some caramel. A very savory aroma, excellent in every sense of the word.

Taste of pungent cherries and oak, with some vanilla and alcohol initially; a sharp molasses and oak flavor finish this one off. Very tasty, even with the alcohol this one has a nice sharp flavor after nearly a year.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied with strong carbonation.

A--Deep dark brown with a red hue, two full fingers of head when poured into my 25 oz. snifter

S--Tart apples, band aid, pears, grains, dandelions. Very deep and complex

T--The taste follows the nose quite well, only the tart apples are magnified. Lots of band aid also.

M--Medium bodied, lower levels of carbonation than I anticipated

D--Not something I would go for again, I think I still need to get worked into these sour beers slower. Not sure my palate is ready. I did enjoy this more than others I have tried though.

A- Dark murky cedar colored body that pours with a 2-3 finger or so off-white head. Head eventually fades to a thick collar and has great retention from there. Some lacing is left behind in the glass. Body is somewhat translucent but the red light still shines through pretty well

S-Vinegar comes to the nose first followed by a metallic presence. Underneath this is additional sourness, oak, cherry and a yeasty funk. Its right on for the style-but maybe a little too metallic.

T-Upfront the oak and cherries really come through well and underneath is a slightly sour funk typical of the style of any Belgian brown. Some more sourness comes through for the finish-this sourness is more acidic than vinegarlike and is light to moderate in strength. What lingers on the palate is a slight acidic sourness, oak, a hint of cherry and a very slight metallc presence.

M- Wonderful. Light to medium carbonation and a smooth slightly yeasty body.

D- This is a very good beer. Much milder than other sours I have experienced recently. The oak and cherry are really the main characters for this brew. A well done brew by Deschutes and I look forward to trying others (have the Abyss 08 in my cellar).

What a treat to find a Flanders Brown Ale! I was shocked when I heard about it and of course rushed to our local beer shop and picked it up. The aroma was full of complex dark fruits and malt character with sour notes. When pouring, the aromas waft up out of the billows of frothy off-white head. The color is a pleasant medium brown with a few garnet highlights. Brilliant clarity and the head persists while drinking -slight lacing. I was impressed with the balance of flavors in this beer. It begins with toasty malt character and deep fruitiness thatlayers into the sour semi-dry finish. The hops are really not noticeable but there may be a touch of bitterness to counter point the sour and fruit character. The sourness of the beer is prominent but balanced with the other components of the beer. The mouthfeel is medium bodied, slight drying, and the sourness has that to-style touch of astringency. Overall, the beer is very well-balanced and drinkable once your palate adjusts for the sourness. A beer well worth the purchase particularly for such a hard-to-find style.

Poured into a snifter.

Appearance: Body is a deep brown-burgundy color, cloudy, and apparently generously carbonated. A 1.5 finger, fizzy, peachy-tan head crackles at the surface. Looks thin and slick. Head stops chattering after a minute or so, and soon settles to a creamy, tan crown.

Smell: Cherries, red wine vinegar, and lemon. Possibly some candi sugar and doughy malts? I'm not too sure. This is my first oud bruin. Upon opening the bottle, Trevor and I were greeted by aromas of black licorice and whiskey. Those flavors disappeared entirely as soon as the beer was poured.

Taste: Red wine vinegar, toasted bread, and sour cherries/cherry lemonade. Sour character slowly decays in the aftertaste, revealing more toasty, roasty flavors like coffee. This one started out shaky, but about midway through Trevor and I were both loving it.

Mouthfeel: Generously carbonated, sugary, thin, warm, and dry. Medium in body, I suppose. Carbonation wasn't over the top (something I feared after the initial pour); in fact, it was at a very enjoyable level.

Drinkability: All in all, that was awesome. I definitely had my doubts about this one, but it pulled through and was downright delicious toward the end. Maybe the sourness is on the tame side? I'm not sure. No stinging carbonation, which is something that's always bugged me about wild ales and lambics. This may be my gateway beer into sours. I'll be buying a couple bottles next time I see this.

A - Pours an odd combination of amber and brown. Not the prettiest color in the rainbow but I'll take it. Minor amounts of haze are present. The tan head tops out at over a finger deep and sticks around for a minute or two. It recedes to a cap that doesn't quite cover the surface fully. Lacing appears to be minimal.

S - Some sour cherry starts it all rolling. Cherry seems to have a multifaceted aroma - sweet and tart at the same time. The brew is musty throughout. Gingerbread comes out midway. Alcohol is barely noticeable on the end. Good job of covering up that 9%.

T - The sour fruit that I was expecting is really subdued in the flavor. The flavors that are present are balanced extremely well. Nothing really steps up and takes control in this brew. Just a smooth balance all the way. Some sweet cherry and unripened apple have a showing. Alcohol is noted a little more in the flavor and has an overall warming effect. Could be some caramel and toffee that come in at the end. They are hard to pick up though. Also, musty from start to finish.

M - Medium bodied with a nice and smooth carbonation level. A little creamy overall. Finish starts out tart and ends sweet and sticks around for a few minutes.

D - Drinkability is very good. Not the best example of the style but a remarkable beer in it's own right. It is a stronger brew but the abv does not seem to hinder how easy it goes down. One bomber in a session is enough for me but I would love to visit this brew again. Smooth + balanced = winning beverage in my book.
