Poured from a 12 ounce bottle into a Shaker pint glass, "best by" date 7-16-15.

APPEARANCE: pours a hazy, copper color with one-finger off-white head that quickly dissipated until a thin layer of small bubbles remained, there is significant lacing on the glass, somewhat lighter than average carbonation.

SMELL: grapefruit, bread and some pine.

TASTE: the taste mostly follows the nose, initially very sweet caramel and then grapefruit, finishes with a pleasantly mild, piney hop profile.

PALATE: medium body and lighter carbonation.

OVERALL: this is a nicely balanced beer, the sweet malt up front made the hops even more enjoyable on the back end, Deschutes is one of my top five brewers, I would buy this again no problem.

Copper toned and mildly hazy from very minute flecks, this ale's fluffy, yellow-tan, head has superb retention, with sticky quick-drying chunky lace down pint glass' interior walls. Aromas are floral, resiny, piney, citrusy on the hop side and just barely caramel on the malt side. Perhaps a little diacetyl, although this I do not find in the taste. Maybe just a little on the aftertaste, but only under the tip of the tongue. Might be something else, but whatever it is not nasty or distracting, certainly not with the hop bitterness that abounds. The flavor profile is strong and balanced, but not too complex. Not really that bitter on front of palate, but it gets you in the back. Has a nice malty touch. To the taste, hops are slightly more brothy/vegetal/herbal/spicy than they are in the aroma, and as already mentioned, less complex, having lost much of the floral/fruity character detectable on the nose. Mouthfeel indicates a medium-bodied brew, mid-range carbonation, very smooth and very crisp. A wonderful drinker for drinkers.

Pours a clear amber color with a good light brown head with good retention. Leaves some excellent lacing.

Aroma is piney with citrus notes. Has some nice grassy and floral notes. Some slight, sweet caramel malts come through on.

Good balance of malts and fruitiness. Bready malts. A hint of the caramel is still there. Some light fruitiness on the back end.

Nice and crisp. Refreshing. Not too much carbonation.

Overall, a solid entry from Deschutes, but nothing out of the ordinary. A good APA.
