Note: This review was a re-post from my former account, jmkratt, which was hacked and I lost all my reviews...sorry for the redundancy.

A - Pours deep black with a finger's width of dark tan head. Nice retention and lacing throughout.

S - Lots of piney, citrus, and floral hop aromas blended with a noticeable blend of dark malts.

T/M - Hop character hits first with the piney, citrus, and floral flavors. Hints of chocolate, coffee and some roasted barley meld to provide a creamy, multidimensional profile.

D - Very drinkable beer.

Overall, this is a good example of the American Black Ale (f/k/a Black IPA, Cascadian Dark Ale, Dark IPA, etc.) Highly recommended.

Deep, mossy flavors in a black ale. Seriously hoppy. You just get time to catch a flavor before the bitterness sets in. Plenty of the dank, mushroomy hop flavors with resins and citrus pith. A fair amount of malt gives it a grainy taste and more than a little sweetness. Fruit compote, prunes, and burnt toast. Some sourness under the malt from charred barley. Aftertaste is more hoppy bitterness and a long smoky burn on the tongue. Not very carbonated in the mouth.

Overall, it is a strong-flavored beer that gets old, to me. It starts with an interesting flavor and gets more bitter, more grapefruity. The 2011 batch from the 22 oz bottle.

A~ Pours Brown/Black with a half inch cap
Of head that hangs out for a while. Good lace.

S~ Juicy tropical fruit! Some cedar/resin notes as well.
Dark malts are more subtle then most other examples of the style.

T~ Wow! Very floral & full notes of All kinds of tropical fruit with a hint of forest freshness, and a great backbone of mellow maltyness lending balance. Two notes singing in perfect harmony.
Not much else to say except that this is truly tasty.

M~ Smooth through & through with waves of floral & fruit drivens flavors. Slightly sticky, not overwhelming. Bittered well. Perfect carb.

D~ A wonderful beer! True to form and very balanced. The definition of a good black IPA.

A friend picked this one up for me. Dark brown, almost black pour with nice tan two finger head with good retention and great lacing. Earthy, roasty, slightly subdued nose with hints of citrus, dark chocolate, coffee, and just a touch of pine and nuts. The taste is noticeably more bold with a nice roasted malt profile up front, meshing nicely with a tangy, fresh hop bitterness on the finish. Lots of dark chocolate and espresso, and as it warms, the citrus comes alive with a touch of pine as well. The mouthfeel is slightly thick and a bit oily, with a really bitter finish. Most of the Black IPA's I've had are more of a stout/IPA cross, where this was more of a porter/IPA. Definitely a unique interpretation of the style, and one that I will revisit. A solid offering from Deschutes.
