The appearance was a nice hazy looking dark red color with a decent two finger white foamy head that must last for a good minute and a half. The head turns a bit lumpy on me with a slightly off-white color to it. There is some decent lacing. The smell had some nice bitter Northwest piney hops backed up by a nice crisp craker-like maltiness. The taste was mainly bitter but added a nice citrus to malty sweetness as it warmed. There’s a decent bitter to somewhat sweet citrusy aftertaste leading to a semi-dry finish. On the palate, it sat at/about a light to medium on the body with a decent sessionable aspect to it. The carbonation actually is somewhat smooth and for the most part is pretty good for the style and for me. Overall, this is a good American Amber/Red ale worthy of having again.

Unknown vintage; drank 10/15/15 on (nitro!) draft @ Fischman's.

See-through dark orange appearance.

Off-white nitro head; frothy lace.

Pine & orange citrus notes in the nose.

Creamy, medium mouthfeel.

A smooth mix of pine, cream & orange citrus flavors. Easy to drink.

From bottle, pours a cola/reddish colour with a good white head that disapates to a soapy layer. Aroma malty, grainey, sweet, slight citrus and pine. Taste toffee, caramel, not over powering hops but it is there piney and citrus.

Overly hopped. Not as 3 dimensional as I was hoping from Deschutes.

This is a well put together red ale. Had it on a nitro pour. I enjoyed the balanced elements here and the overall profile. Caramelly malts and biscuit blend with the decent but slightly muted hop elements. The nitro piece helped this go down smoothly.

That type of red with lots of gleaming clarity to it, a full inch of head, off white, the lacing was uniform, the retention was tight. Aroma came off like a hoppy red ale.

The beer thankfully emphasized the hops and caramel more than the red malts of yesteryear. Some earthiness to it. Definitely a better direction than the standard red ales. No peat. or not much.

Served On-Tap

A — Pours a reddish but bright pale amber hue into the glass. There is a rocky off-white colored head that forms and leaves behind some solid rings of lace with each sip.

S — Smell is malty, rich, sweet, grainy, little bit of a hop balance, but not much. Focused on malt, grainy, crackery, lightly sweet.

T — Much like the nose there is a resounding sweetness of toasted malts and grains, balanced against a lightly bitter hop profile.

M — Medium-Full bodied, fairly light and thin though.

O — OK overall, not my favorite in the style, but if there were no other better options I'd still order it.

My fall quest for good red ales continued with a pint of this on draft. Unfortunately, it was bland. Then again, I had it after drinking a more flavorful competitor.

Pours a finger and half of head on a dark straw body.
The aroma is sharp citrus and pine.
The taste has a nice moderate pine and citrus bitterness, then mellows to a mild sweet finish.
The texture is crisp.
It smells great and tastes good.
