A: [3.25] Pale straw colored beer. Forms a pretty small (under a 1/4 finger) of white head. It was gone faster than I could type this far. The can lists the ABV (5.6%) and there is a best by date (08/02/2016).

S: [3.00] Clove, banana, lemon grass.

T: [2.75] Similar to the nose with clove, banana, some bubble gum. I don't get a lot of hops over these other flavors. There is a weird sort of soapy taste on the finish.

M: [3.50] The body is decent and the carbonation is right.

O: [3.00] This flavor profile is not my favorite. I dodge Belgian yeast strains because I don't like how they taste. I took a gamble on this one because I hoped the IPA part would impart more flavor. It didn't. This has a very clove forward Belgian beer flavor. Unfortunately it got more pronounced as I kept drinking.

This beer poured a nice opaque gold with about a half a finger of head and persistent lacing. This was an approachable Belgian ale, not overly sweet or acerbic but balanced with a refreshing but astringent impact on the palate and a moderate, mouth-coating feel. The aroma isn't strong, more characteristic of a Belgian, not at all piney or hoppy. Thoughts of lemon, white raisins, coriander, and mild cloves are evoked. IPA seems a misnomer; to even call it a pale ale is generous but regardless of genre it was an enjoyable and very refreshing brew.

Best by 10/20/14:

Pours clouded lemon-drop yellow with a fluffy white head. Trailing lacing sticks.

The smell is of wheat tang, orange peel, lemon, coriander and leafy notes.

The taste of sweettart mixes with spice and citric bitterness in the refreshing finish.

Creamy smooth, this is an enjoyable unique brew. Witbier meets American IPA, and it works!

This almost pours like a Radler with a lemon juice like color and a frothy white head. Lots of small bubbles course throughout and some stick to the glass.

The aroma is floral with rose petal, perfumes, honey suckle and banana. Almost like a Hefeweizen this has a clove spiciness with a liquid soap type aroma.

The taste has a wheat and grain taste and dryness but is overwhelmed by the floral hop and yeast flavors. Rose petal and perfume, clove and yeast, soapy and phenolic this is not my favorite.

The feel is a touch dry at first but then has a resiny slickness. It also has a carbonated harshness.

I'm guessing this is quite frankly not my cup of tea. It seems to be well received but not by my palate.

I was drinking this last night while I was rewatching the 3rd season of Breaking Bad and I thought to myself: "Why does my mouth taste like I licked the asshole of a soap monster?" Upon further contemplation, I realized it was because of the sad excuse for a White IPA by Deschutes. Why bring such scorn and sadness (dishonor) to the Oregon brewing scene? Have you no love for your home and native land? Come back when you get 'A' in mathematics.

Deschutes Chainbreaker IPA: These mixed styles are all the rage. Belgian IPAs and Whitbier IPAs.... I am all for it if the result is good!

The Chainbreaker looks like a Whitbier, light straw color, slightly hazy, very carbonated and topped with a pure white foam that laces well. The aroma has the citrus base to it, and a bit of flowery hops come through. Flavor wise, there is honey, lemon peal and a touch of hoppiness. Much more a Whitbier than IPA. It works for me, as I am a fan of whitbiers. Very good.

Give it a try if you like Whitbier, if you are an IPA head, you will be disappointed.

Pours a pretty straw blond with appreciable haze and two fingers of nice creamy head that leaves good moderate lacing.

Smells first of floral hops that blend seamlessly with the orange peel, and also sweet malt. Coriander spice is also readily apparent. Only complaint is the slight undercurrent of musty paper that wheat ales can sometimes possess.

Taste first has the moderate bitterness and grassy notes from hops and the citrus flavor of the hops meshes perfectly with the orange in this beer. Hops are very restrained and serve mostly to balance the sweet character. I was really expecting more hops up front since this is supposedly an IPA. Spice livens the palate and brings a nice bite, and the wheat and malt bring slight bready notes. Finish dials up the hops bitterness again and is slightly drying.

Mouthfeel is smooth from the wheat and warm from the coriander with a balancing bite and gentle astringency.

Overall this is a very enjoyable shot at a Belgian wheat ale, though I kind of feel like it should include another shot of hops to not only live up to its title, but cut the sweetness. I like this beer, though, and those nitpicks won't stop me from getting this again.

To good health and good beer.

Poured from a growler (filled @ 16 Tons Union Cafe for Base Camp for Beer Fanatics event) into Deschutes Tulip

A - Pours a brilliant hazy golden rod w/ 1 finger pure white head that fades to a med density cap and leaves great lacing

S - Smells of citrus zest, coriander and orange, lemons and grapefruits, herbal notes, peppery, hay, honestly it smells like a Saison w/ the Dupont strain, kind of tart.

T - Taste mirrors the nose, citrus fruits, pepper and clove, pears, grapefruit, tangy/zippy, herbs and spices, basil, tart, light tropical notes in the back end.

M - Light, crisp, dry, bitter grapefruit finish, zippy and tangy, fizzy bubbles.

O - Very impressed, great marriage of IPA and Belgian Esters, lots of citrus, herbs, spices, hops, very complex, refreshing, and enjoyable, had to have a second pour.

Appearance: Pours a sour lemon juice yellow…very spring-like, looks like it’s gonna be one floral IPA…it looks light and delicate…some head did form when I poured it, but not much remains, can’t really even call that a consistent layer…for it’s light color, it’s real hazy, I can barely see my finger through the glass…it’s got an interesting color, but the lack of head is a detriment…(3.5/5)

Smell: Light, floral, lemon, banana…fresh, lively, and light…it’s like a spring breeze running through a daisy field…definitely has Belgian style qualities, I’m catching hints of yeast, pepper, tropical fruits, coriander, grass, bubblegum…it’s nice, different and refreshing…(4/5)

Taste: Mildly sour, citrus zesty, yeasty (aka noticeable damp forest/mushroom-like funkiness), floral, grassy, very lively…tons of flavors going on…sweet bready malts, coriander and a touch of lemon peel resin bitterness…YUM! (4/5)

Mouthfeel: Light body, medium carbonation (very soft feel)…it does fluff up a bit on my palate spreading lemony resinous bitterness…it’s light, refreshing, crisp…very light for something considered an IPA, but it definitely works here…(4.25/5)

Overall: This is a wonderful variation to the IPA…I wasn’t sure if I would really enjoy a “white” IPA, but this is good, real good…the coriander and yeast don’t over do it here, only enhance and compliment…the flavor is super drinkable and refreshing, this is the perfect summertime brew…I could drink several of these while watching a day game at Wrigley Field or hanging out on the disc golf course over at Hudson Mills and be very happy…this brew came to me highly recommended and now I pass it on to you…if you haven’t tried this uniquely delicious brew yet, now is the time…life is to short to be withholding to yourself…(4.25/5)

12oz bottle into snifter.

A: Pours a lightly hazy chalky lemon yellow with a huge, billowing, bright white head. Head slowly collapsed into a rocky film leaving chunks of lacing down the glass.
S: Lemon hops, chalky Belgian yeast and peppery spices.
T: Follows the nose with notes of lemon, pepper, Belgian yeast, chalky doughy malts, and hints of wheat and coriander. Finish is rather sweet, and the aftertaste is lightly spicy.
M: Fluffy and creamy mouthfeel, medium-full body, with airy carbonation. Juicy and wet.
O: A perfect six pack Belgian IPA. Nothing too strong but it drinks very well. Worth a shot.
