Best by 10/20/14:

Pours clouded lemon-drop yellow with a fluffy white head. Trailing lacing sticks.

The smell is of wheat tang, orange peel, lemon, coriander and leafy notes.

The taste of sweettart mixes with spice and citric bitterness in the refreshing finish.

Creamy smooth, this is an enjoyable unique brew. Witbier meets American IPA, and it works!

Serving: Bottle into tulip
Served: 18 August 2014

Appearance: 3.75/5. Pours an opaque beeswax color with a one-and-a-half finger soapy white head. Head sticks around for a while and looks decent.

Smell: 3.5/5. Hops dominate the palate but are not the only presence. Floral hoppiness is somewhat counterbalanced by a somewhat rough spiciness and soft banana notes.

Taste: 3.75/5. You can definitely tell this is a white IPA since the Belgian notes definitely come through. This kind of tastes like a hopped up Blue Moon, with a purer banana ester but the same rough-ish spiciness. These Belgian-style flavors are overlaid with an appreciable floral hoppiness.

Mouthfeel: 3.25/5. Initially really nice, but the carbonation fell off sooner than I expected, leaving the beer dead and flat.

Overall: 3.5/5. A solid white IPA, but one I wouldn't feel the need to have again.

I was drinking this last night while I was rewatching the 3rd season of Breaking Bad and I thought to myself: "Why does my mouth taste like I licked the asshole of a soap monster?" Upon further contemplation, I realized it was because of the sad excuse for a White IPA by Deschutes. Why bring such scorn and sadness (dishonor) to the Oregon brewing scene? Have you no love for your home and native land? Come back when you get 'A' in mathematics.

Got this as part of the Deschutes sampler pack. Not typically a fan of white IPAs but I tried it anyway and it was a great choice

A - Bright yellow that is very cloudy from the Belgian yeast. Brilliant white head with light lacing.

S - Predominant Belgian wit beer smell but with some citrus hop right there.

T - Upfront Belgian wit with that tart, lemony, and grainy/wheat but then the citrus hop character comes through. The hops really pull the lemon and wheat together and make a very tasty beer. There is sweetness but it is balanced by the tartness of the yeast and the bitterness of the hops.

M - low/moderate mouth-feel with moderate carbonation. Mostly balanced between the sweetness and the crisp nature mixing it up from sip to sip.

Overall, this beer is the best Belgian Wit I've ever had hands down. Like I said it isn't my preferred style but adding a fist-full of american citrus hops to a slightly citrus beer makes this one a tasty brew. It's balanced, flavorful, and a change of pace from your average american pale. If you are on the fence about Wits try this and realize that they aren't all bad.
