Not a typical stout, has some fruity flavors and mild cocoa and roasted malt. Comes across to me like a dark saison, maybe even some brett.

A RIS ? Not really, more of a mix between a belgian dark ale and a stout. It's a lot about the chocolate but also with a lot of estery notes and good yeast character. It's light in color (for an imperial stout) and in body, with a fine carbonation.

L: gives a deep black color, small top of creamy head that stays there. Sticky lacing on the glass.

S: roasted malts, dark chocolate and cocoa, coffee, dark fruits like plums and figues and different spices

T&F: start of suprisingly fruity and sweet, the malts are in the background all the time and I get more coffee and chocolate in the flavour in the middle while it finishes of bitter from the hop that is lasting in the aftertaste. The high alcohol is very good masked in this beer.

O: a little ironic that is named after a character that supposedly dispised beers in the books about him. This stout is well done, and I can't say anything else than that I enjoyed it. Very drinkable.

From Belgium in a box. In Teku glass. Playing Magic Duels. Surprisingly drinkable for the style, with well hidden alcohol and a very balanced profile.

Bottle into tulip. Bottle is very attractive. Pleasant aroma of malt and brewers yeast when the flip top opens with a surprising pop. Minimal pale head with little retention apart from a couple of small islands of foam. Pleasant sweet malt on the palate. Gentle coffee and fig flavours? Little lasting aftertaste. Thin body with smooth, light carbonation. Perfectly nice but wouldn't crawl over broken glass to get another bottle.

Appearance: Wonderful dark, burnt toast dark. Thick, rich and creamy tan coloured head. Head dissipated fairly quickly but leaves amazing lace and surface linen.

Aromatics: Bready malts out of the gate with a lot of great dark fruit (plum/date/fig) and a bit of cacao and tasty caramel sweetness as well, maybe a few kisses of vanilla in there too.

Taste: Roasted dark chocolate malt and subtle fruit notes that sweeten the tongue at the beginning before it hits a bit of a tanginess and alcohol whisper at the end. The raw cacao-like bitterness of the aftertaste does linger a bit, so I waited bit longer between swigs than I normally do; to make sure my palate wasn’t pre-loaded with bitter to wash out those sweet fruity qualities at the beginning of each sip.

Mouth: A fairly decent medium to full bodied and relatively smooth creaminess; interrupted ever so slightly by the still active carbonation. Fairly dry finish, and I almost expected a bit more astringency than I felt, but I didn’t pick up much of it if any. Slightly warm booziness but hides the 9% extremely well.

Overall: My favourite style, so this is one I was really looking forward to. It sat in my fridge for at least 8 months; not sure why I waited so long, but decided today was the day - so overall it is a bit above par as far as a straight-from-the-bottle goes. I’d love to try this on a tap with nitro. A great stout all around though, I’ll definitely buy this one again.

Purchased at Lekkerbier. In swing top bottle. Small head, dark stout, nice cocoa, nice carbonation. A great example of the style.

Very nice smooth imperial stout. Ordered at a bar in Brussels. Would definitely drink again.
