375 ml bottled February 2013. Served in a small Cantillon tasting glass.

Appearance: Pours a deep ruby red color with minimal head that fizzles away instantly. Body is only slightly hazy with light visible carbonation.

Smell: Lots of oak, sour cherry, barnyard, earthy.

Taste: Tart cherry, cherry skins, lemon, high acidic sourness, oak, slight nutty character and moderate amount of funk.

Mouthfeel: Light/medium bodied. Carbonation is low, but good enough to keep the beer from feeling at all flat.

Overall: Pretty good stuff and one of the better "shelf" krieks out there. Worth picking up.

Pours a purdy clear darker red body with a pinkish head that sticks around.

Dirty, cherry, yogurt, almond smell.

Light tartness with some juicy sour cherry and cranberry fruitiness. Funkiness is there in a big way balanced out with the fruit and sour.

Mouthfeel is spot on with carbonation, body and dryness.

Really enjoyed this kriek.

Enjoyed out of a green 375 mL bottle with a cork and cage topper. Label is notched with a bottling date of February 2013. Poured into a Boulevard Smokestack Series tulip glass.

Appearance - Careful pour so as not to dump a bunch of sediment into the glass yields a gentle bubbly head a shade under a full finger. The foam is a light tan with a pinkish tint to it, resting atop a deep garnet red with ruby highlights. The minimal head is not for long and leaves no lacing.

Smell - A wonderfully tart blend of sour cherries and woody, musty funk. There are also underlying notes of acetic red wine vinegar and vinous cabernet sauvignon spice, reminiscent of cinnamon soaked apples.

Taste - The relatively complex aroma is supplanted by a mouthful of puckering acidity. There are strong notes of cherry and red currant, along with oak and notes of woody tannins, and again the musty, wet hay funk that lends some balance to the sourness. Finish is dry with just a kiss of fruity sweetness.

Mouthfeel - Medium-bodied and moderate to low carbonation, with a considerable amount of puckering to the palate including a bit of mouthwatering factor as well.

Overall, a wonderful take on the style. I'm admittedly a sucker for krieks, but this one is exceedingly well done. Sour and puckering, with a nice depth of aroma and a nice dry finish that entices the next sip in spite of the aggressive sourness. I don't know what this one tastes like fresh, but honestly, I don't care. It's fantastic with over a year on it, and I will have to make a point to grab bottles of this when I see it around town. It's an acceptable substitute for it's more famous Belgian sour beer making counterparts, and more readily available.

A - Crystal clear, Raspberry red good clarity, tiny head,

S - Chery cough syrup, must, dirt, sharp cherries and raspberries, candy sweettarts,

T - Red-wine vinegar slays the senses, dull tartness grows into a raspberry and cherry acidic lock jaw. Bigtime sour, old funk, salt, tart cherries, granny smith apple skins, raw cranberry juice, finishes dry and very acidic.

M - Light body, wine like, silky, little to no carbonation, sour, dry finish

Excellent sour Lambic. It has some funk but the sourness is the main player. If your in the mood for some puckering sour lambic juice, this is your liquid. Haassens doesn't mess around.

375 ml bottle into tulip glass, bottled in February 2013. Pours fairly clear ruby red color with a 2 finger dense pink head with poor retention, that reduces to a lacing ring that lingers. Light spotty lacing clings on the glass. Aromas of sour cherry, cherry skin, cranberry, green apple, grape, pear, clove, pepper, oak, leather, straw, hay, red wine, vinegar, musty funk, and yeast earthiness. Very nice aromas with good balance and complexity of cherry, wild/lactic yeast, and oak notes; with good strength. Taste of big sour cherry, cherry skin, cranberry, green apple, pear, red wine, oak, clove, straw, grass, hay, vinegar, leather, musty funk, and yeast earthiness. Good amount of fruity acidity on the finish; with lingering notes of sour cherry, cranberry, green apple, oak, clove, red wine, leather, vinegar, straw, hay, and musty funk on the finish for a good bit. Very nice complexity and balance of cherry, oak, and wild/lactic yeast flavors; with a very nice malt/acidity balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Light-medium carbonation and medium bodied; with a smooth, crisp, and acidic mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish. Overall this is an excellent sour kriek style. All around great complexity and balance of cherry, oak, and lactic/wild yeast flavors; and very smooth to sip on with the balanced acidity. A very enjoyable offering.

Bottled July 2013.

Beer is dark pink, purplish. Small pinkish head fades quite quickly.

Nose contains funky barnyard scents, a bit cheesy. Tart cherry.

The cherry is a bit stronger in the flavour than the nose, but the funky barnyard is undiminished. Quite sour. Some oak. The cherry flavour is very nice, and well balanced with the funk- both are prominent.

Medium bodied, highly carbonated. Quite puckering.

Overall, good stuff. A nice kriek.

Bought a 750ml from Bruisin Ales in Asheville, NC. Lambic aged in oak barrels with cherries. Bottle conditioned for over three years.

A: Cloudy with beautiful red hue. Thin white head dissipates quickly but lines the glass.
S: Tart cherries, sour pucker and a light rubber/plastic aroma. Must be some funk from the brett/pedio/lacto(?) bugs.
T: Very low pH. Big lactic acid sour pucker right up front. As my palate normalizes to the acidity, a delicious full tart cherry flavor dominates, with vanilla accents from the oak. Slight vinegar quality.
M: Thin body and tiny bubbles give this beer a crisp, bright mouthfeel that compliments the tart flavor.
O: Delicious beer! The best Lambic I have tasted. Really exemplifies the Belgian stlyle. My grandma wasn't quite as fond but seeing as this was her second sour ever (after Rodenbach Grand Cru) it was a bit of a shock for her. Slightly expensive but with good reason. This is a great beer for special occasions.

Poured into 3F wine glass. Ruby red color with virtually no carbonation. Only an occasional few bubbles around the edge of the glass.

Tart acidity in the smell. Has a spicy and fruity character, but also a funky almost sulfur note as well. There is also a worchestershire sauce quality in the nose too.

Taste is tart with cherries and other fruit. Almost no bitterness.

Mouthfeel is prickly and dry. Sourness gives your parotid a workout.

Overall this was excellent. I have only recently started to gain an appreciation for the style.

Hanssens Oude Kriek has not only the tartness of cranberry juice, but the appearance too. Ruby red in colour and completely flat (less the few bubbles that periodically dance around the glass like ballerinas), this looks like something much better for your kidney than it actually is.

The bouquet is something like a red-wine vinegar that's been infused with cherries and cranberries. It has a good deal of fruit but far more vinegar-like must and sharp, rousing acidity. It has a definite Gueuze-like quality (whereas if that style is characterized by 'locker room sweat', this one might be said to have a 'moldy basement sweat'). Put simply: it stinks.

Technically, Krieks made outside of the Pajottenland region or greater Brussels area are not "authentic". I'd suggest an alternative distinction that considers the ratio of sweetness to stink. In my opinion that's a much better barometer for how 'true' Lambic should be defined.

Kriek is historically characterized not by a candy-like fruit flavour (as are many modern so-called Krieks that feel entitled to the moniker because of their Belgian origins) but by the trademark mustiness and acetic tartness imparted by the bacterium and wild yeasts of the Senne Valley.

According to these standards, Hanssens Kriek passes with flying colours (all shades of red, naturally). It is so incredibly high in that bracing sourness that it almost resembles vinegar (to the point many couldn't drink it). Nevermind the cherries, this thing drinks like unfiltered, unpasteurized cranberry juice. And it is has a mustiness like an old barrel just farted.

Indeed, for a cherry beer, Hanssens Oude Kriek has lots of candid, unvarnished Lambic qualities. Some fruit is appreciable, but not as much as the dusty cellar in which this surely spent considerable time aging before, during, and after the fruit was added. It's arguably one of the most genuine (least embellished) examples on the market. I loved it!

Bottled Feb 2013. 750ml bottle to a "Piggly Wiggly" tulip (thanks beerbyrd).

A - Dull ruby red. Very clear. Pink, bubbly head that dissipates very fast.

S - Apple cider vinegar, bright berry smell (cherries, raspberries, strawberries). A little funk.

T - Very bright sour cherry, raspberry, strawberry. Very fruity. Slight acidic tang (especially as it warms), but not overpowering. Very little Belgian funk (blue cheese). Not extremely complex, but tasty.

M - Light and crisp. Aggressive carbonation that scrubs palate. Nice for this style.

O - Really good beer. Very enjoyable drink. Price point is excessive for what it is. $22 @ Whole Foods Newport Beach.

Bought a 375ml bottle to try from Cask n Flask in SJ. Poured into a white wine glass because that's the best glassware I could find at my friends house. Reviewed from tasting notes from a few weeks ago.

A - Pours a nice, opaque, and deep red color. Does not seem like too much carbonation, as the head is almost non-existant.

S - First whiff is intensely fruity. Sour cherries obviously dominate, but I can also get hints of other sour fruits like raspberries and citrus. Slight vinegary smell, but not too overpowering.

T - Right off the bat, definitely one of, if not the most sour beer I have consumed. Strong sour cherry and lemon zest. Losing the raspberry I thought I smelled. Also quite vinegary, but not so much as to make it taste like an infused vinegar. You can still tell it is a beer.

M - Mouthpuckering because of the intense sourness. Very light carbonation at the start, but it seems like the carbonation is lost by the time I finished the bottle.

O - Great appearance, smells, taste... A great Belgian sour beer at a decent price (I think I paid about $10). I will definitely buy this one again if I see it on the shelves. Also, for those who care about food pairing, I really thought this was one of the best beers I ever paired with Filipino pork BBQ skewers and pickled papayas, who knew?

Served chilled in a Duvel tulip

A - pours a murky red, almost purple. No head to speak of, appears well-carbonated

S - aroma is initially funky, musty, followed by ripe sour cherries

T - intensely sour, cherries, lemon up front with earthy, yeasty undertones

M - medium bodied, well carbonated

O - very easy drinking, especially on a hot day. not too overpowering with the cherries, one of the most sour beers I have had the pleasure of drinking.

12.7 oz bottle. $9.99, don;t remember from where. No date, but I've had it for two years or so.

Appearance: Clear, deep red garnet color. Almost no head. Appears undercarbonated.

Smell: Very oaky, vinous. Lemon, cherry, apple cider vinegar, a little funk.

Taste: Super sour and puckering. Very oaky and tannic. Cherry and maybe raspberry flavors. Lots of vinegar. Long sour and sticky tannic finish.

Mouthfeel: Drastically undercarbonated for this style.

Overall: I believe this bottle is an exception and the beer is likely usually better carbed than this. Very tasty though.

Hello enamel eater! This is the sour of legends, bordering on vinegar.

Pours from a 750 with a pink tinted broken head which fades rather quickly.

Smells of cherry, tart fruit, and a hint of vinegar.

Taste is legit sour. Tons and tons of in your face enamel eating sour. Cherries, a hint of pie crust, and more sour. At times it is almost overwhelming. I have to take very small sips. Whole bottle took 2+ hours to finish.

Overall a very solid kreik, though I find myself wanting a bit more balance at times.

A - Ruby pink with a 1-finger white head and mild lacing.

S - Sour cherries, citrus, straw, funk. Bold.

T - Much like the aroma. Sour cherry, light malt, lemon flesh, funky.. Good and sour/tart but no vinegar, which I appreciate. Well done.

M - Light-medium body and medium carbonation. Dries nicely.

O - Very nice example of a sour kriek. My wife really enjoyed it too. Worth seeking out.

Poured from a 750ml cork and cage bottle into a wine glass

A - Beautiful looking beer! Ruby red with a nice 1 finger off white head that sticks around for a bit and leaves some lacing.

S - Smells like lemons and tart cherries with a little bit of barnyard funk

T - Very tart and acidic up front. You have to be ready for a big, sour, beer - but this doesn't disappoint. The tart cherry flavor that follows is nicely balanced by a little bit of barnyard funk at the end.

M - Dry mouth feel, with a nice, fine carbonation. Maybe not as nice as a 3F or Cantillon, but good.

O - I'm glad that I gave this one a go. When I have an itch for a good sour kriek I will likely revisit this again!

A fresh bottle. Pours a very dark red with a non-existant head. This beer is very acidic. Acid is predominantly acetic. This dominates but of course there is plently of funk but also notes of smoky oak and even some raw meat. Overall, a decent kriek but a little over the top with too much vinegar taste.

Bottle has been cellared two years. Bottle opened with no pop. Nice garnet color. Little/no carbonation.

Smells of vinegar with some cherry fruit.

Tastes like Mother Funker on cherries. Very acetic-could use this to make salad dressing. Not mouth puckering though, and there is a good flavor of cherries.

Body is light, no carbonation, and stickiness doesn't make a good mouthfeel.

Overall, this is too sour and the acetic acid is too strong, detracting from the cherry and funk aspects. Clearly, I didn't do this any favor by cellaring two years. Hope to try this again fresher/on cask.

Bottle into Portsmouth Snifter

A Murky red with no real head to speak of. Lots of big carbonation bubbles stuck on the side of the glass and some lively carbonation along the glass.

S Vinegar, sour cherries, oak and a hint of sweetness. Really hits all things i wanna smell in a Kriek

T Very tart upfront that goes to the finish. Almost a shock tart pucker toward the middle and some cherry comes out as well. Slight oaky barrel comes out toward the end and the finish is dry and tart

M Medium carbonation for a Kriek, along with a medium feel on the tongue. The finish is quite dry.

O Pretty nice reasonably priced ans easy to find sour in my area.

A: Pours a dark red to violet clear color forming a minimum rose bubbled head with low retention and only few lacings left

S: Sweet and fruity. Strong notes of cherries and Lambic yeasts. Tart in the nose with some light notes of oak

T: Slightly sweet upfront with strong notes of cherry, grapes, vinegar and oak. In overall, a wuite dry and fruity taste. Lambic yeasts. A little bit metallic

M: Light body. Good carbonation. Fruity and tart aftertaste

O: Good drinkability. Good Lambic Kriek

Bottle to hfs sniffer

A: ruby red with a redish foam head that goes away quickly opaque

S: smells like oak cherries and funk but mostly the oak barrels

T: starts off with a crisp taste then A punch of sour cherries but is not overwhelming I can taste the oak with a bit of funk that would definitely come out more if it was aged

M: there is a crisp tingling on the tongue then a lip puckering sour it is a bit oily but very drinkable for me at-least

O:this is my fist kriek but I feel like I started off with a bang and I really like the style I am interested in seeing how this beer would change with age but I like it right now as I have a very high tolerance for sour which this really gives I would recommend it to anyone who likes krieks or sours

375mL bottle. Lot D. BB 07/08/2027. Based on quick internet research, there's at least 3 years of age on this.

Deep crimson with just a skerrick of carbonation that quickly disspates, despite the healthy pop of the cork. Swirling produces the same effect.

Broodingly dark and rich, dank and woody, balsamic sour cherries. Moderate sweaty sock character. At once straightforward and complex.

Taste isn't quite as layered, but is still seriously good. Strong tannins, moderately lactic and salty. Striking resemblance to a big Shiraz or Cab Sav.

Pretty big from the tannins and fruit. A tad more carbonation than anticipated, which helps cut the intensity a little. Plenty of lactic tartness.

Impressive and seriously assertive. One of the better Oude Krieks I've had, although not quite in the league of 3F.

A- Pours a clear red color with a finger of pink head, leaves spotty lacing.

S- Mild cherry aroma, lots of dry musty funk.

T- Lots of lactic acidity, dry, musty, barnyard funk, cherry skins. Dry wood and barrel flavor, it's a very dry, super acidic kriek.

M- Light-bodied, high carbonation with a dry finish.

O- A solid kriek, there are others that I like more but this is a really enjoyable beer, definitely worth picking up.

Very, very dark red with a small white cap. It pours out fizzy--didn't glug out or nothing--but no effervescence is noticeable just by looking at it.

Smells sharply tart but also smooth. The oak aging is salient only in the nodes it blots out. Big cherries, not much funk.

Tastes a bit like an organic Shock Tart, like if something unnaturally intense were somehow robbed of its cloying fakeness and all that's left behind seems wholesome and real in spite of its intensity. It's like how exercise feels: a good high.

Pours a brilliant, slightly murky coppery-red. A three finger pink head leaves no lace, but retention is good and an ever-persistent small head remains. Aroma has nice depth and complexity starting with a slight vinegar and following with a musty, earthy scent. Of course, there's some cherry, too - sour cherries amid a light funk.

From other reviews I expected this to be quite sour, and it is, though not bracingly so. Tart and sour pick up immediately and hold on through to the finish. I could do with a bit less, as i feel that it's masking other elements of the flavor profile. What I could do with a bit more of is fruit, which would counteract and even balance out the sourness. Vinegar presence is well-muted. I get a little bit of oak, but it's being squashed by sour. Mouthfeel seems to be a really good match for the style. Medium carbonation that's in the Goldilocks zone - not too harsh and not too soft.

While this is only my 3rd lambic or so, and only the first I've reviewed, I think I might be coming around to the style. On a hot day this would be quite enjoyable as-is, but I could do with a little more fruit and a little less sour. Those who are big on sour notes would do well to seek this out.
