Hazed golden peach color with a huge, fizzy white head. This bottle is probably around four years old and it seems that the individual characteristics of this beer have melded together nicely. Nose eye-wateringly provocative, with notes of citrus, must, melon, honey and the typical cheese-funk of spontaneous fermenting lambic beer. Taste is a wonderful blend of both worlds -- mead and gueuze lambic. Oaky, acidic, tart, and sweet, this beer provides the palate a variety of flavor. The oak-aged gueuze creates notes of vanilla and citrus, while the mead imparts flavors of honey and melon. Mouthfeel is smooth and light with a slightly spritzy sensation lingering. A very easily drinkable beer for 9% abv. It's almost impossible to detect until the beer is, of course, well within the confines of one's stomach. Overall, this is a very interestingly blend of old fashioned Lurgashall Mead and Hanssens gueuze, one of Belgium's most traditional. Enjoyable stuff.

Tralucent golden hue. Furious carbonation yields an animated, frothy porcelain white head that fizzles readily into a spotty, thin layer. Waft of floral, lavender derived honey and black pepper hits the nose upfront, but is quickly offset by cheesy must and buttermilk like lactic tartness. Phenol becomes more pronounced in aroma as it breathes, progressing from a stately herbal presence, to clove, then approaches medicinal, yet it works. Quite intriguing aromawise. Flavorwise, this brew is reminescent of an unsweetened hard cider fermented with a phenolic Belgian yeast. Tartness akin to well underripe pear incipient in flavor yields to a melange of earthy black licorice, damp, incubated hay, and impressions of ground clove with a shaving of rubber. Evanescent sweetness darts in and immediately out mid palate, leaving behind only the floral essence of honey, without any of the associated sugar. Bone dry, and very well attenuated. I'd wager the combination of enteric bacteria, wild and primary yeast and high fermentability of honey has facilitated a final specific gravity around 1.000 or less. The dearth of dextrins leaves the mouthfeel overly fluid, yet ominously light on the palate. Notes of lemon flesh surface late, lending an agreeably citric, and slightly juicy presence. Finishes with a fleeting suggestion of lemon drops and unsweetened licorice. Only a trace of ethanol warmth surfaces after the swallow suggesting strength below the listed 9.0% ABV. An unbelievably odd and enjoyable brew. Perhaps the antithesis to the commonly brewed honey ale.

Curiously the Mead came from a winery in Britain (Lurgashall Winery) while the gueuze is Belgian..

The cork launched from it’s bottle berth like a missile. The beer burst upon the scene in a torrent-- lucky my glass caught all! Nary a drop wasted.

The flavor is not as sweet as I anticipated, especially given the “mead” moniker. I don’t know what “Lurgashall Mead” tastes like thus I can’t get specific about its contribution to the union of flavors-- of Mead and Gueuze. There is a definite hint of honey mead in both the nose and the flavor start although overall the profile is not a honey sweet but a well balanced commingling of sweet and sour-like overtones. I find that the general flavor body to be a bit thin. Furthermore, the flavor complexity I’ve tasted in other gueuzes doesn’t manifest itself in this lambic blend. Relative flavor and finish is clean and lingering. The beer produces a foamy head.

In summary, an interesting and flavorful combination of Mead and traditional Gueuze.

They have numerous bottles of this at University Wine and Spirits in Cambridge. Anyway, started to loosen the cage and Kablamo!! nearly took my eye out and I thought the cork was going to blow a hole in the ceiling. Bottle bubbled over like champagne, I looked around for the cork...never found the cage. Pours a pale turning cloudy yellow/green with loads of carbonation and a frothy airy champagne head. Smells of sour honey and of old running shoes and some grassy horse blanket smells too. These are all mellow and inoffensive though. Has a very dry champagne like flavor, but the sweet honey/apple and sour/sweat flavor tell me it's different...and better. A dry malt flavor on the finish. I'd take this over champagne any day! Very unique and tasty, and worth a try even if just for the explosion of the cork.

This beer has an immediate sour aroma. A very lively carbonation creates a dense white head. Faint honey aroma. Has a very dry taste to it though it does have a hint of sweetness. Very light in the flavor department. Not too sour, though there is a nice sharp acidity. I could perceive no real honey taste, which, from my experience with some fermented honeys, is no real surprise. The beer was brilliantly clear and golden in color. Definitely worth trying if you like the lambic style of beer, but in the end a bit lackluster.

I originally sampled this beer on 21 May 2003. I am writing this review from my notes.
Incredibly high carbonation. Before I could even twist off the champagne cap, the cork shot straight up like a bullet. W/ all of the carbonation, it had a surprisingly smooth taste on the tongue, no bite. The aroma was feint honey

Horsey, barnyard like aromas typical of a gueuze. Gold in color with a ton of head. The cork flew out of the bottle on this one. Traditional lambic tartness gives a bit of body to the sweet fruit flavors of the mead. It can best be described as somewhat bittersweet. Some fruity citrus notes were detected as well. Due to the complexity and intensity of the flavors, it is not the easiest drinking. Very interesting and another well crafted beer from Hanssens.

I should have worn ear plugs when I popped the cork! lol A window shattering pop, and enormous fluffy head shoots out. I could have sent the cork into orbit, but I wanted to save it. The head is enormous and then quickly subsides.

The aroma is very strongly musty, sour, and tart. I could smell it from across the room. The mouthfeel is dry and crisp, with champagne-like carbonation. Taste is musty yeast, sourness, sweetness tugging war, with sour winning in the end. There's no hint of alcohol whatsoever.

This is a very different beer and worth a try.

This is the most interesting beer I've had in quite some time. Luckily I had read earlier reviews, so I expected the cork to come flying off... and took evasive measures. Clear and yellow-gold with a very active and persistant head. (My wife had a glass that she left sitting for 2 hours and there was still 1/4 inch head.) So much carbonation that you'd think this was champagne... rough mouthfeel and thin to medium body. Aroma was of sour apples, must, and grass. Flavor was much of the same... tart... not much sweetness, but there is some flavor of honey as well. It has a very dry character which must be imparted by the honey. This isn't one I'd have very often, but it makes for a great change of pace, and would be a beer to serve in place of champagne.

As soon as I twisted off the cage, the cork exploded and crashed hard into the cieling. All of the cats ran out of the room.
It's blonde yellow with a boiling, vengeful head that stands up. It's like looking at a lava vent as it stiffens on top, then is consumed by the rising energy from the rim underneath.
A nose of phyllo, diatetic cookies, green banana peels, flowers, diotomaceous earth, and potting soil.
The flavors are chalky dry with dried, powdered geen apple skins and stems. The finish is dry, chalky and abrupt as it leaves an impression of dried bones.

I wish I had read these reviews before I opened this bottle...when I popped the cork, it sounded like a shotgun blast! I almost dropped the bottle, it was so unexpected.

This brew pours with some serious carbonation - a tall, big-bubbled, foamy head rose exponentially even on a gentle pour. It quickly settled into a nice lacy head. Body is straw-golden, a little hazy, with a lot of apparent carbonation. Has a horse-blankety smell, along with sour fruit, sweet honey, and yeast aromas to accent. Nice sour taste of grapes and citrus. Also a bit yeasty, with taste of alcohol present. Honey not very assertive in the flavor, but it is noticeable especially in the bone dry finish.

Todd was right about the cork, nearly took my hand with it as it popped. The sediment stayed compact on the bottom with the ½ inch of beer that I left in the bottle. Mildly hazed yellowish golden colour, big chunky head at first pouring and keeps a decent lace most of the way down.

Lemony tart, musty yeast, faint horse blanket, underlying alcohol, dried fruit and medicinal aromas are quite fragrant.

Expressively crisp and light bodied, has the mouth feel of a robust champagne. Rounded tartness, musty yeast with a barn yard blend. Lemony with other dried fruit flavours, very dry palate though there is a kiss of honey flavour within. Deceiving alcohol starts to catch up about mid bottle as the warmth hits the body. Touch of spice and more honey flavour in the finish.

One of the more interesting beers in the market, surprisingly great and impressive with its simple complexities. Went well with a smooth aged Hunter’s Cheddar.

Is it beer or is it mead? It is a candy or a breath mint? Who knows and who cares. It is one of the most unique ideas to come in a bottle for some tiime. Being a big fan of both Hannsons and Lurgashall I had really high expectations and the prodcut delivered. It has it all, the musty, tangy flavor of a Gueze and the honey character and biger body of a sweet mead.

I would say if you are more of a mead drinker and not of Gueuze you may want to sit this one out as the Guezue flavors take some getting used to but it is a quality product and fun idea to boot.

Presentation: 500ml thick green bottle, corked and caged. No bottle date. Mind the cork. This is highly carbonated and the cork will rocket out on its own, once uncagged.

Appearance: A very clear, bright yellow. Carbonation is highly active with mixed sized bubbles that creates a sticky, delicate, foamy pure white Brussels Lace head. Bottled-conditioned, so there will be dregs in the bottle.

Smell: Very much lambic-like in aromal; apple, must, light pepper, horse, grass. Soft floral nectar aromas too.

Taste: Hits the palate with a tonic water feel and flavour, then light honey flavours emerge and coat the tongue. Goes sharp, tart, dry with an apple skin bite, which then fades into a fruity apple-like character. Notes of pepper. Dry in the finish with tonic flavours lingering for quite some time. Yeast flavours pull through as the beer warms, and the apple skin / must flavours become more pronounced.

Notes: With a blend of 70% Hanssens traditional Gueuze and 30% classic lurgashall mead, this is probably the most drinkable Gueuze on the planet -- apparently this was crafted off of an idea by B. United's Dane Bass. Mead the Gueuze is an extremely refreshing, complex and unique beer. What's amazing is that there's not even a hint that this is a 9% abv beer. If you can still find this remarkable beer blend ... I highly recommend that you give it a try.

Light golden honey color,light fruity,bannana on the nose.Thick viscous,not overly sweet easy drinking lambic.Can definatly detect ageing but heard its blending thirty%mead and 70% three year old gueze,matured for four months.
