A 375ml corked and caged bottle, bottled on 16th November 2018. Poured into a 3 Fonteinen stemmed glass.

Appearance: A hazy dark red colour with an orange hue, with a thin off white head that left no lacing.

Aroma: Tart, cherry, strawberry, raspberry, acetone, with musty, damp and balsamic notes.

Taste: Sour, intense sour, cherry, raspberry, oak, acidic, balsamic vinegar.

Mouthfeel: Sharp, acidic, medium bodied with soft carbonation.

Overall: A few bottlings of Hanssens have had strong sourness and harsh acidity, and after the first sip I thought that this was going down that similar route. But thankfully things improved somewhat after that first sip, and I think that the berries somehow toned down the acidity to a slightly more acceptable level.

Dark scarlet red, thin ring of loose bubbles, light to no carb.
Huge red fruit aroma, strawberry, cherry, and raspberry.
Very acidic, sour and juicy. Strawberry, raspberry, and cherry flavors, light lemony vinaigrette sourness. Vinous and still, a lot like a fruity natural wine. Unique fruit character, light oak in the aftertaste. Overall it’s pretty extreme and distinctive, like most of Hanssens output. Best shared due to the high acidity, but it’s nice stuff.

Side note: Still unblended lambic is intentional and traditional. Anyone can force carbonate beer. This is done the traditional way, straight from the barrel without CO2 added, which has become nearly extinct in our modern/filtered/sterilized world. This is often lost on international consumers. Go to Belgium and drink unblended lambic at the source, it will change your life and obliterate any misperceptions.
