Is it a saison or a smoked beer? That's the question.Pours into a large tulip glass a somewhat murky deep burnt orange with a large blooming off white crown that leaves two full rings of lace as it settles into a frothy mass. The smoke is light in the nose with mild yeasty phenols and toasted grain detected.Dry on the palate with a little chalkiness and white pepper, the smoke is very light in the finish,a grainy feel. This would be a good springtime drinker while out grilling or planting,I'll revisit it in a few months.

Bottle: Poured a dark yellow color ale with a huge foamy head with perfect retention and excellent lacing. Aroma of subtle peat smoked malt notes with light cereal notes is quite enjoyable. Smokes become more and more apparent as beer temperature increase. Taste is a great mix between some smoked peat notes with some rustic cereal notes and some peppery yeast notes also noticeable in the aftertaste. Body is about average with good carbonation. Another great creation from Dupont with great balance and drinkability while maintain some complexity

Very nice, interesting smoked beer. Appearance has a large billowy head and a hazy-to-lightly cloudy amber color. Aroma is smoke, yeast, fruit, grain. Flavor's similar to nose with carbonic tang in front, sweet in back and smoke while present, doesn't overwhelm. Great body. Easy drinking brew

Pours out a hazy orange with a lasting white head. Smells of smoke, caramel, yeast dough, and tea-like hops. Tastes of a caramel ambree base with toasty and smokey notes. Herbal hops come in, as well as mild yeasty esters and phenols. Tiny bubbles on the tongue with a moderately weighted body. Awesome.

On-tap 12/31/2014 at Track 84 in Warwick, RI, served in a goblet glass.

A: The beer is a deep amber color, with a thin off-white head that fades slowly and leaves a thin lace on the glass.

S: The aroma contains smoked malts, some hops, some caramel and some fruit.

T: The taste starts out with a good smokiness up front. Then some mildly sweet flavors of caramel and fruit come in. The hops presence is mild but complementary and the malt character is thin creating a good balance. The after-taste is slightly smoky and slightly sweet.

M: Crisp and smooth, medium body, medium carbonation, finish is clean.

O: Tasty, goes down easily, not too filling, mild kick, good representation of style, this is a solid beer to drink for a while if you’re in the mood for the smokiness.

On-tap at Mugs Ale House, Brooklyn, NY

A: The beer is clear yellowish amber in color and has no visible carbonation. It poured with a short off white head that died down, leaving a patch of bubbles in the center, a collar around the edge, and some lacing down the sides.
S: Light to moderate aromas of smoke are present in the nose.
T: Similar to the smell, the taste is quite smoky, but not as intense as a rauchbier. There are also some interesting hints of orange peel.
M: It feels nearly medium-bodied on the palate and has a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This is an easy drinking smoked beer that isn't too heavy on the palate.

Pours a hazy copper / dark amber, two fingers thick sudsy tan colored head. Settles slowly with a few rings of chunky lace on the glass. Smell: mandarin orange, grainy with wood smoke - toasty and mildly meaty; lightly herbal. Taste: mild nectarine, grape skin, tangy grain with a little toast and doughiness in the back; smoke is lighter here and lends a cohesive earthy and toasty flavor. Light with space-filling carbonation, finish is mildly earthy with fleshy nectarine and finishing dry. Lingering sweet orange. Baller smoked saison.

I tried to like this beer. Compared to other smokey beers, this seemed too ashy to me. Dupont's beer portfolio is still outstanding...

Poured from 750mL corked & caged bottle into a tulip.

Appearance: medium golden hue with a moderate murk and a strong effervescence. Head poured three fat fingers of frothy ivory-tan foam that sticks around for a long time. Pretty.

Smell: a nice smokiness; present, but not too strong, atop a mildly phenolic base. There's a definite dunkelweizen element here. Not bad at all.

Taste: similar to the aroma, but with a dash of sweetness and fruitiness that provides a welcome counterpoint to the smoke and phenol. Balanced and tasty.

Mouthfeel: medium body with a massive carbonation and creaminess. Great.

Overall: a very good beer indeed. This would be great with a meal.

Poured into a Gulden Draak tulip. Pours a quite hazy orange amber with a fine, two finger off-white head that contiues building for a long time after the pour, with pillowy lacing. Aroma dominated by smoked malt with hints of orange and light saison yeast, bit odd and vegetal. Flavor is mild saison yeast, bready malt all covered by nice spicy smokehouse with a hint of peat. Finishes semidry with a pleasant lightly orange residual smokiness. Peppery active carbonation and mouth feel. This does not have the intensity of the Aecht smoked beers, but does a superb job of delivering good smokiness without the hefty malt body of Aecht. The balance between the saison and smoke is just about perfect. A bit on the spritzy side with overactive carbonation, but I did not lose any opening the bottle, so all is forgiven. It's been a long time between new smoked beers and this was a great way to reintroduce myself. This is one of the world's stellar breweries.

The appearance is about as beautiful as you'd hop to find in a beer. Poured into the tall Timmermans goblet, the color is clear golden amber, with a massive, foamy pile of suds that sticks to the glass all the way down to the bottom. Intriguing unidentifiable aroma.

The flavor is a surprise, but gradually reveals to be smokiness. It's not your usual barbecue smoke, but something like pine smoke though light enough to be inviting. The brewery says the "phenolic characteristic" is from the addition of malt dried with Scottish peat (something to do with malt whiskey). A little woody with just a touch of the Belgian yeastiness.

Certainly one of the very best smoked beers I've had. The creamy mouthfeel subdues the unique flavors a little and just makes this more drinkable. Another reason to try anything from Brasserie Dupont. From the 750 ml bottle purchased at Bottleworks in Seattle.
