Style: Saison / Farmhouse Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 9.50%

Availability: Winter

Notes / Commercial Description:
Les Bons Voeux means best wishes, which is what Brasserie Dupont sends with this very special saison ale brewed for the holidays. Redolently aromatic, rich and velvety.

Rich gold color, fragrant (lemony with hints of pepper, banana and clove), as all the beers of Dupont are with a full, deep malt richness that lingers on your tongue for what seems the whole holiday season. Considered by some the finest offering from this unparalleled Brewery. “The best Belgian beer, if ever there could be such an award...a sumptuous, seductive 9.5% beer. Because of it’s intensity, I would recommend the novice graduate to this beer. However, if a saison that is starting to lean towards being a triple appeals to you, and if its in season, don’t hesitate.”

750 ml corked and caged bottle, purchased at Sams in downtown Chicago.

Pours a very cloudy yellow/gold, looks like a weissbier, huge thick white head forms, stays forever, great lacing and retention. Smell is very sweet, malty, wheat, spices, very yeasty, nice citrus kick, pretty crazy aroma. Taste is toffee and butter, citrus, very yeasty, alcohol through the middle, wheat, crazy flavours, very dry bitter finish, very spicy. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with high carbonation. Maybe overrated in my opinion but a real treat.

Opening this one before the last presidential debate of the 2008 campaign which is being hosted in Nashville. I have had this beer for about a year now. 2007 cork.

Pours a nice transparent gold with a voluminous, cloudy head. Sticky lacing.

Dry, peppery aroma. Some residual light fruit tartness. Not much stronger in smell than a regular (for lack of a better word) saison dupont.

One of the driest beers i have ever tasted. Herbal, with bitter finish. Again, despite being over 9%, this one taste as light as the regular SD.

Drinkable, but I really was expecting an incredible beer. This is a really good beer, but not exceptional.

750ml bottle corked and caged

A forum discussion today convinced me to go home and crack one of my 08's, i figured since ive never reviewed the beer now is the perfect time. Pours a transparent golden yellow orange color with a monster, rising, pure snow white head that protrudes up and over the rim of my Corsendonk tulip, tons of vigorous, lively carbonation rise in support of the large head. Wonderful bouquet of earthy, grassy hops, some lemon skin and mint leaves. Sweet malt, very bitter hops and a hint of wheat late on the palate. Grassy and herbal almost medicinal in nature a subtle whiff of alcohol at the finish accentuates the classic hop character of the beer. Medium bodied, slightly coating and completely alive with carbonation. This one remains a winner.

Rocky, dense white head with a unique formation. Rather sticky, thick patches of lacing. Cloudy, bright golden with shades of dark orange. Noticeable carbonation.

Oak-soaked light citrus and bright fruit aromas: apple, pear, lemon. Mild pepper and corriander.

Bright fruit flavors initially: pear and apple, with an underlying candied sweetness. The alcohol presence gives the citrus and fruit flavors a warming bite. The corriander spice is predominant. The spice intensity is what makes this Saison unique. Dry finish with an oak and corriander aftertaste; slick hints of alcohol.

Light bodied; crisp and dry on the palate. Light and refreshing.

A nice Saison; juicy and well spiced. The alcohol presence is definitely noticeable, but it doesn't hinder the ale's true flavors.

A - a light golden straw color, with a very thick, 2 1/2 finger thick, rocky white head that lasts a while, moderate carboantion and sediment

S - a loemony wheaty aromo, typical of saisons, and a spiciness behind it, like cloves or nutmeg

T - a citrusy flavor up front, almost like orange juice, very big, then a bitter hop blast, a spicy hint (the nutmeg/clove) resides in the background the whole time

M - very balanced, a great flavor, a top notch saison, very impressive

D - high, easily downed, not to sweet, acidic, or bitter

A: Orange/Yellowish with a nice creamy, white, head. Some lacing too.

S: Exotic fruit, Phenols, Belgian yeast, Cloves and some hops.

T: Spices (nutmeg?), Fruit, Citric notes (orange), Belgian yeast, Cloves and some small hint of alcohol.

M: Sweet with a slight hint of sourness. Spicy and quite complex with a decent bitterness at the end.

A quite complex saison with both a nice sweetness and bitterness to go with it. Tasty and dangerously drinkable.

Pretty beutiful golden hugh with nice white head that leaves typical spotty Belgian lace around the glass. Tight carbonation. Aroma is nice dupont yeast, kinda peppery, fresh hay straw n lemon. Flavor of Belgian yeast, simple malt bill and grassy noble hops. Really it's all about the yeast. Little bit
Of wheat flavor. Similar flavors to the aromas, grassy, hey n straw. Nice dry finish and silky mouthfeel. For a saison of its strength this one goes down easy.

750ml bottle served in a Triple Karmeliet tulip glass.

A - Pours a cloudy orange with an impressive white head that shows excellent retention.

S - Pilsner malt, lemon, wet hay, spice, coriander, apple, peach, bubblegum, taffy, alcohol, tart grassy hops.

T - Follows the nose, spicy yeast, coriander, apricot, peach, apples, bubblegum, taffy, lemon cuts through the sweet stone fruit, a very mild grassy tartness plays on the back of the throat, pilsner malt keeps the base. Finishes spicy.

M - Medium body, moderate carbonation, fruity semi-dry finish.

Big pilsner malt base, with loads of fruity yeast esters. Hops are grassy and mild, finishes peppery and semi-dry. Very good overall. Pretty high ABV for the style but drinks good.

Poured from 750ml bottle into Chimay goblet.

A - Pour is medium gold straw color with a creamy peachy beige head.

S - Musty, wet straw/horse blanket. Some summer fruit on the back end.

T - Slightly hop forward with a citrus peel bitterness. Funky yeast coats the tongue.

M - Clean, effervescent carbonation, moderate body, dry finish.

A solid saison. Slightly more bitter than normal, but decently balanced overall.

From cervezasespeciales. In Teku glass. Watching Sons of Anarchy 6x12. Tartness in nose and the beginning of the sip but then it becomes deliciously fruity, lemony, sugary.

750 bottle into belgian tulip.

Appearance is hazy light apricot yellow with a big fluffy off white head that lingers as it should.

Aroma is sourdough, lemon zest, white pepper, apple juice concentrate, basil, and spring field flowers.

On the palate, bready malts play with spicy yeast esters all while a rounding earthy hop presence keeps the balance. Rye, sourdough, lemon pith, clove, filtered apple cider, and faint tangerine show up through the palate.

Mouthfeel is superb. Not overly carbonated, silky light medium body, and overall just the way it should be for the style.

Overall this a great saison. Nothing bash, just a finely tweaked belgian iteration. Getting back to the roots with this one.

Poured into a Duvel glass.

Pours a cloudy golden yellow orange; tons of bubbles and a massive near white head. Head is tremendous looking. Incredible head retention and lacing. The head and lace is massive. Really is a tremendous looking brew and is among the best looking brews I have ever seen. Wow.

Brew smells of spice; yeasts and coriander lemon zest. Good nose.

Brew is spiced; citrus, lemon - zesty. A good brew just a bit too spiced. It could use more yeast which would add to the body and mouthfeel. The brew is spiced from start to finish. Cant tell it has high abv, somewhere between a triple and a saison. Good tastes, just could have been something way more. Good.

This is one of the best looking brews you will have. It doesnt quite hit on the taste though. But it is very good.

Pours a slightly hazy orange with thick dense eggshell colored head, settles to half an inch that sticks, rings of lace down the glass. Smell: dried apricot, notes of dried pineapple and orange marmalade, floral and lemony, mostly crackery back with a little honey and biscuit, pepper. Really nice but subdued vs other Dupont saisons. Taste: grainy biscuit, pepper, dried pineapple, sugary, candied orange and lemon peel. Medium bodied, creamy feel, chalky finish. Tasty amped-up saison though not nearly as dialed-in as their others.

Poured from a corked and caged 750ml bottle into a 20oz pint glass. Label on bottle is different then picture on BA site. The label on this bottle is yellow. Cork says bottled in 2007, no best by date. Beer pours a hazy golden amber, with a nice 3 finger head, that diminishes, mild lacing. Smells slightly sweet with light hopping, grassy. Taste is sweet, with a mild malt body. Sweetness comes on late, with a pleasant hop bitterness. Hints of citrus, slightly hot. Nice long slightly bitter finish. Mouthfeel is pleasant and complex as it warms. Drinkability is a little rough at 10%. Very nice beer, label states that its a New Years beer, which makes it a first for me.

Give it a shot

750ml green bottle with new yellow label. Large roman numeral III followed by official title: Avec les Bons Voeux de la Brasserie Dupont.

Date code: L08130C I can only guess it was bottled 01/30/08.

Cork pops loudly and pours into a tulip glass. It has a hazy golden yellow color and thick white head tops the beer. It sticks around forever leaving a trail of lace on the side.

Aroma is intoxicating. It is just incredible - very fruity, spicy, and complex. It also has a lot of hop aroma going on which is a little unusual for a saison.

Flavor is funky with a good dose of bitterness. It's very unusual with a bready yeast and almost meaty character. Lots of spice both from yeast and hops, probably saaz or similar. Aftertaste is almost musky but not in a bad way. Definately complex and it keeps me coming back for more.

Mouthfeel is very good for the style. It's medium bodied with good fine-textured bubbly on the tongue. A little more bitter than I was expecting but not bad. Finishes very dry for a beer. It's almost more like a brut champagne. Drinkability could be improved if it wasn't so strongly funky and bitter.

Overall a very interesting beer and something that stands out in a crowd.

Vintage 2010 poured into my St. Feuillen glass.

A-Pours hazy blonde with about an inch of frothy, bubbly eggshell white head. Leaves soapy lacing down the glass.

S-Grassy hops, honeydew, blood orange juice, and DuPont's signature yeast.

T/M-Less earthy than the standard DuPont saison. The difference is subtle, but ultimately significant. The earthy, funky yeast is at the forefront of the flavor profile, along with notes of white pepper and a touch of coriander. Gets nice and dry mid-palate, with a warming finish and prickly carbonation.

O-A great alternative to the sweet, sometimes syrupy Belgian holiday ales. My favorite DuPont beer.
