Style: Saison / Farmhouse Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 9.50%

Availability: Winter

Notes / Commercial Description:
Les Bons Voeux means best wishes, which is what Brasserie Dupont sends with this very special saison ale brewed for the holidays. Redolently aromatic, rich and velvety.

Rich gold color, fragrant (lemony with hints of pepper, banana and clove), as all the beers of Dupont are with a full, deep malt richness that lingers on your tongue for what seems the whole holiday season. Considered by some the finest offering from this unparalleled Brewery. “The best Belgian beer, if ever there could be such an award...a sumptuous, seductive 9.5% beer. Because of it’s intensity, I would recommend the novice graduate to this beer. However, if a saison that is starting to lean towards being a triple appeals to you, and if its in season, don’t hesitate.”

How long has this been available stateside? Why am I only now just noticing it?

A slow pour into a lovely crystal chalice reveals a dark yellow saison, perhaps bordering on orange, with a lively head and wonderful fizz.

Smells spicy and lightly nutty and herbal, more malt-forward than most saisons, with the yeast taking a backseat to nodes of biscuit and medicinal alcohol. I confess that I miss the skunkiness found in the lower strength, green-bottled Saison Dupont.

Tastes like a combination between a saison and tripel and an 1800s cough drop. It starts with aggressive fizz and peppery yeast, very similar to their regular saison only more intense. This is soon overwhelmed by a malt profile that's lightly smokey and very heavily nutty, with some high octane yeast on the finish. A very intense-tasting beer for the style... I almost wish I hadn't opened a whole bottle, as I was expecting something lighter and more refreshing.

Once I adjusted my expectations, however, I began to somewhat enjoy this beer--although not as much as its smaller brother. It would make for a decent, shared aperitif or night cap, but overall it manages a diminished complexity and lack of drinkability, both of which are negatives for the style.

Poured from 750 mL bottle into snifter.
A: Pours a beautiful clear yellow hue with high carbonation producing a 2-3 inch bubbly white head with good retention.
S: Soft sweet citrus (lemon and orange), white pepper, dry minerals, doughy yeast, and a hint of honey.
T: Honey and melon hit first, followed by soft citrus, white pepper, fresh doughy yeast, honey, almond, and vanilla. With warming, notes of banana and clove emerge.
M: Soft, fruity sweetness. Medium body with a soft, almost velvety, feel. Mildly astringent throughout. A note of bitterness in the finish. Lingers and matures nicely on the palate too.
D: A solid brew and an interesting, holiday, take on the saison. Seek it out!

No idea as to a date, received from the Rare Beer Club a month or two ago.

A: Pours a clear amber. Very large fluffy and fizzy light tan head. Good head retention but very little lacing.

S: Very floral with decent citrus and quite a bit of honey, actually. Doughy bread hiding in there too.

T: Again, floral up front. Some grass and citrus. Doughy malt with a hint of honey. An interesting mouth coating, dry spiced sensation on the back end, I can't quite place it, it reminds me of white wine really. Lots of white pepper spicing it up with bits of clove. Lingering grass and pepper between sips.

M: Medium bodied, high carbonation. Spicy and mouth-coating.

O: Interesting saison. It's a bit sweeter than most, with a higher ABV and a distinct taste of honey. Strong flavors for sure, it's more or less an imperial saison in my eyes. Airy feel helps the drinkability. Very wine-like at times. Unique and tasty.

Serving: Bottle
Date: 2016

A:
Pours a rich fuzzy amber with three fingers of soapy beige head that settles as a gloppy island of whipped cream and then a ring. Little lacing; okay retention. (4)

S:
Spicy hay with rich layers of sweet and bready malt, weed eater dust. (4.25)

T:
Similar to the smell. Layers of hay, clover, crusty bread, honey, bruised herbs, tea. (4.25)

M:
Rough, airy velvet with active carbonation and fluffy feel, sweet. (4)

O:
Really nice beer. I'm glad to try this after getting a skunked old bottle a while back. Just lovely and well-made all around. Rich honey color with night dirty, effervescent head. The aromas are rich malty and field-like. The flavor follows suit and really showcases the malt and yeast interplay, especially considering that there is a pretty strong spicy, herbal hop punch as well. Very nice beer. Would have it again no doubt about it.

Pretty sunset yellow-orange color with a quarter-inch head, copious bubbles and lots of floating yeasty bits. Bready malt, phenol, spice and a bit of tropical fruit on the nose. Mouthfeel is very nice, prickly and plush at the same time, but the phenol overpowers everything.

I wish I hadn't read the Alstrom Brothers review before I tasted this. "Hugely phenolic" is right, to the point of being reminiscent of old Band-aids. Not my thing.

From the corked, caged 2016 750 ml. bottle. Sampled on December 31, 2016.

Hazy orange-amber pour under a lasting white head with bits of sediment floating about.

The aroma has quite a bouquet of yeast, white bread, toast, herbs, and spices and perhaps a little juicy fruit. No alcohol bite for 9.5%.

The body is medium or better.

The taste brings out a more abundant spicy and peppery character with the fruitiness hidden just a little but still there. The finish is spicy. No alcohol in the flavor either. It was quite good but there are others out there that represent this style better.
