Good presence of swirling cloudiness on the poor. Respectable head fades quickly. Nice aroma; good saison flavor. The beer's considerable assets are undercut, however, by an aggressive mouthfeel.

Clear golden colour, medium head with long retention, compact lace. Aroma of fennel, pepper, cloves, coriander. Medium to full body, creamy palate, good carbonation. Taste of fennel, pepper, , fruits. A classic beer.

Look: Beautiful yellow-gold color and very hazy. HUGE amounts of foam from the bottle. The foam is thick, dense, and frothy. Great head retention as well. Still quite foamy with a gentler pour.

Smell: Wafting up are scents of tart fruit, grass, herbs, citrus, and a hint of balsamic vinegar. Very aromatic.

Taste: Instant blast of spices and herbs. A slight bitterness upfront (from hops and yeast I presume). Sweet caramel malt comes in that's quite a bit like biscuits and crackers. There's a nice sweet white wine flavor as well. It's amazing the different herbs and spice flavors that swirl around: coriander, sage, black peppercorns, nutmeg, lemon grass. There's a slight metallic tang (like most good Belgian yeasts produce).

Feel: Medium mouthfeel. A bit oily and slick. Starts off sweet/slick, dries out on the tongue towards the end.

Overall: Great Saison. Many refer to this one as the "Benchmark" Saison. Well balanced between sweet/tart/bitterness, very strong spice, bread, and yeast flavors. I've spent more money on not nearly as good Saisons. Great value for one of the best Saisons around.

750ml poured into a wine glass

Pours a pale straw color and generates a one and a half finger white head with great retention. Some sticky lacing is left clinging to the glass.

Aroma here is bright and fruity with citrus notes of orange and tangerine, some lemon, a nice yeast character with floral undertones.

Same bright fruitiness in the flavor balanced by a really pleasant peppery spice. The flavors are wonderfully balanced with a slightly dry finish.

The ale is lively with carbonation, sporting a medium-thin body that is crisp, clean, and easy drinking.

This is as good a saison as I've had, I can see where it gets it's reputation.

11.2 oz. bottle

Pours hazy amber-gold with a dense creamy white foam head. Smells like ripe bananas, apricot, peach, orange, lemon, caramel, vanilla, bready cereal grain, peppery clove spice, some funky hay, with floral earthy herbal grassy pine. Tastes like bananas, apricot, peach, orange, lemon, caramel, vanilla, bready cereal grain, peppery clove spice, mild funky hay, with floral earthy herbal grassy pine. Feels medium bodied, creamy with moderate carbonation. Overall a really great saison.

Appearance is pretty solid, a bottle conditioned brew which if poured correctly leaves a light hazy body and medium head. The head is quick to scarper, but the hazy body is consistent.

Aroma is definitely on the citrus side, but is clearly an inviting brew.

Taste and feel are both very good. A light hoppy taste is just subtle enough to want more, and is quite a thirst quencher.

I like to think this is how a beer should be, probably different from bottle to bottle, but gets a thumbs up and a couple of solid boofs from the bujon.

Poured from a 750mL bottle. Cork pops right off. Be careful not agitate the bottle before opening! This one is about a year old. I previously had one that was fresher so I will try to compare the two.

Pours cloudy golden color with a huge foamy white head that sticks around for several minutes. Decent thick lacing is left behind. Looks pretty carbonated. There is quite a bit of sediment at the bottom of the bottle. I will avoid this until the last glass.

Aroma is peppery, floral, and yeasty-very spicy overall. Slightly lemony but the spices come through most strongly in the smell.

Taste is malty, earthy, yeasty, and spicy. Sweet up front with a slightly bitter bite at the end. Very refreshing!

Feel is medium weight, creamy at first with a dry finish. Complex yet so drinkable.

Overall this saison is a real treat. The one-year aging possibly made this one a bit more bitter than the fresher one I had previously. However, the spicy yeasty goodness is consistent. This is a beer that I plan to pick up regularly-I envision this being perfect for a hot summer day. One of my all-time favorites.
