Three bottles down and seven more to go, the fourth beer in turn to celebrate the anniversary of my beer posts is Monk's Stout DuPont: a chocolate and coffee stout.

The aroma of coffee is huge when you take a whiff. On the second take, the smell of chocolate is noted. Notes of vanilla waft to your nose as you keep drinking.

The flavor of black coffee packs a lot of punch. It is almost as if I am drinking coffee instead of a beer. As you get used to the coffee, the taste of dark chocolate is felt. Roasted malt adds to the envelope of the major ingredients to this brew.

The presence of toffee is raw, but faint. Once you notice it, it feels as if you have a mouthful of it. The yeast strain used is Belgian. The yeast comes across earthy and yields some spice in the finish. A hint of red cherries are upon your palette, but are easily noted in the finish.

The quality of the water is exemplary. The water creates a very easy drink to this stout style. As you experience the water, the accent of vanilla beans is parted and adds its texture to the coffee and chocolate.

Monk's Stout DuPont is an archival beer brewed in the late 1950s and still with us today. Stylized as a British Stout, this drink imparts a watery take on the stout style. The finish yields the yeast spice and dark chocolate bitterness. On the other hand, the finish is very watery. Alcohol is 5.25% abv and is nondescript as the elements of the beer overwhelm your taste buds instead. At first, the beer appears rather plain. However, there is more to this beer than we think. Listen to what your taste buds are telling you and you will experience more than the roasted malt, dark chocolate, and coffee.

Cheers. Prost. Drink for the love of beer.

Having seen the other ratings on this, I set lower expectations. Fortunately, they were wrong. This bottle had been sitting around Saveon for a while (years).

It pours with nice head. The aroma is almost a bit chocolaty, just through the malts ad yeast. This is where the taste goes too. All malty and yeasty, but not boozy.

The total experience is favorable- a nice Belgian stout that is not at all boozy. Recommended.

Brasserie Dupont – Monk’s Stout
English Stout – 5.2% - 330ml Bottling date unknown – Best Before 02.2015

Just noticed that the best before date on this bottle was 13 months ago, but being a bottle conditioned stout, that may not be a bad thing, it may well have smoothed out over time.

Appearance: Small hiss when cap cracked, then a gentle pour into a ½ pint glass had to be in stages due to uncontrollable off white head that did dissipate quickly. Noisey carbonation. Looks a bit like a coke-float (coca-cola with ice cream). Nice lacing.

Aroma: Coffee, bitter chocolate and roasted malt – pretty standard stout aromas backed up by a hint of spicy yeast.

Taste: Coffee, chocolate and roasted malt, aroma translates very well here. Not as bitter as some other stouts I’ve had of late – could be due to the age.

Mouthfeel: Thin – medium body.

Overall: I’m not a huge stout fan but this is palatable, not particularly exciting though and not one that I will be searching out again. It seems a little one dimensional, as if something is missing. I look for big flavours/something exciting in my beers, especially ones from Belgium. This is just too bland I guess. I was also expecting something a little sweeter going by its name alone, it’s not sweet and it’s not bitter, fairly neutral all round. 6.75 / 10.

Dupont...you make some really tasty beer...so what happened here? Pours black with a medium head but only a little lacing. Nose is not very strong, even as it warms. Some chickory, herbal, and limited roasted notes. Taste is mild, a bit watered down, and slightly acrid. Limited traditional maltly toasty flavors. Mouthfeel is a bit rough and over carbonated. Not impressed.

L: black with thick foamy tanned head
S: roasted malt/ thin coffee, mugi-cha (japanese roasted barley tea),
T: citrusy dupont yeast character, crashing with burned coffee. not much caramel malt so it feels empty.
F: finishes dry as expected from their yeast
O: this is not a typical stout by any means... i miss some caramel notes that i associate with this style of beer. instead, this one feels like watered down coffee... dissapointed.

From the corked, caged dark green 750 ml bottle. Sampled on November 11, 2015. I wish it was dated because I expect this had been on the store shelf where I purchased it for many months

Mahogany brown pour with reddish hues under a lingering tan head.

The aroma has a slightly sweet malt character with a bit of funky yeast and a hint of grape.

Acidic light to medium body.

The taste had a kind of cooked vegetable sweet malty character at first but the finish was acidic and bitter. I was not enthusiastic about it but I finished it.
