A - poured an ink black coffee w/o cream color and a solid finger of light caramel colored head. Letf a nice lace. No light penetrated when i held it up to the lamp.... Nice!
S - roasted malt, cocoa powder and more roastiness. Very strong and solid bouquet. I like it. I know what type of beer i'll be drinking.
T - Feint chocolate taste with a small amount of coffee then ending on a burnt popcorn flavor. Solid and robust flavors.
M&Dr - NIcely carbonated and a good medium body but i liked this brew less than my rating. I would prefer a bit more sweeter or chocolate taste on something called a chocolate stout, but as a stout it was tasty so i had to give it a 4.

Pours thin but opaque with little to no head. Has a very nice roasty aroma. Flavor is clean and dry, with lots of pleasant roasty toasty goodness in the finish. Big beer snobs take note, this is much more of a dry stout than a big thick impy. I find it to be extremely pleasant and drinkable in the way a good, mellow dry stout should be.

Pours out to a clear, near black mahogany, eeking out a small cocoa dusted soapy head with poor retention and no lacing. Carbonation is mild to moderate. The aroma is really wonderful...deeply roasted malts, black walnut, vanilla, cocoa powder, dark chocolate and some lightly dusted hops. The mouthfeel is brisk and zippy with a nice roasted pungency, medium body and clean ferment. No appreciable off-flavors. The taste is much like the nose, however I notice the body isn't quite as hefty as the nose would expect and there is a mild amount of green leafiness in the finish and aftertaste. A touch of cardboard also looms there.

All in all, this is an OK porter, but I would be hard pressed to call it a chocolate stout. As a matter of fact, this initially reminds me quite significantly of what Bell's Porter used to taste like back in the day, but the green leafiness and slightly thinner body hamper it's enjoyment in the end. Still, I would drink this semi-regularly if I lived out in Colorado.

Re-reviewed 2/11/12-Newly available to our area. $16.99 for a mixed 12pack sampler. Calling a beer a chocolate stout when it contains no chocolate is called a cheap marketing gimmick. I stand by my original review. This is a flimsy stout, more of a porter. It's a bit too acidic and minerally, herbal hops, flimsy body, burnt finish. I have to add, now that it is available in our area, I'm not inclined to buy it again. There are much better porters (and stouts, for that matter) for the same price-point, and it doesn't taste at all like Bells Porter or what it used to be. Hrmmm.

12 ounce bottle. This beer pours out a black color with half an inch of brown head. Roasted malt and chocolate aroma, with some unexpected ham-like smokiness. Roasted malt flavor, but I don't detect any chocolate. More smokiness. Slightly astringent. Some hops in the finish. Medium mouthfeel. Decent drinkability. I was hoping there would be more chocolate in the flavor, but this is a decent beer anyway. The smokiness sort of works.

Black. Dark black which under the scrutiny of light remains unforgiving and shows no feebles corners or edges. The nice-sized tan head dissipates quickly, shows sign of good lacing and legs. The bouquet
is a mix of roasted coffee, unsweetened cocoa, and a liquid mud cake. Enticing...

After such an auspicious start, the taste had high expectations to meet...and I found it a little more than disappointing. The choco/moca/Wild Turkey flavors are non-distinct, and the body is light with a slight, pleasing hoppiness that makes it rather refreshing, if underflavored. At the height of tasting, the most distinct flavor I can tease out is weak, cold coffee.

I'm a huge fan of the beers from FBC (they claim to be "the official beer of earth" and may not be too far off), but, for me, this is their most feeble offering. I think that there's good potential here if they can find a way to amp up the palate to match the extrordinary looks and scents of this brew. I'll keep my fingers crossed and check in with another single of these periodically.

A final side note: A little later on, I nursed this while I ate a piece of chocolate cake. The coffee flavors and light hoppiness were a nice match for the sweetness of the cake...maybe this is one to enjoy by association rather than on its own.

Dark ruby brown with small tan head that fades but leaves a good ring and nice lacing all the way down.

Pronounced and very nice smell of coffee and dark chocolate is followed up by taste of the same, though not so pronounced. Sourness is very up front (a bit surprising), with a bit of sour-cherry taste throughout. Not exactly what I expected.

Mouthfeel is a bit thin. Long roasty-bitter finish.

Very drinkable for a chocolate stout.

Overall, a fairly decent brew, but a bit thin and sour.

Very Almost. Damn near opaque.

Smooth chocolate malt nose. Bakers chocolate with hints of burnt toast. Nice, I guess. Not a chocolatey as I would have liked.

Rich, smooth bitter chocolate malt that stays constant throughout and is accompanied by chewy malt and a kick of grass near the end. Not as sweet as I'd like, nor as complicated, but still pretty darn good.

Better warm. The champagne body is nice and gives the beer more heft. Not hard to drink at all.

Picked up a six at Liquor Mart (awesome store by the way). The beer pours a dark black hue that does well on the tip test. Meaning little to no color changed when you tip it or hold it to the light. The head retention is good and pours a tan color with some off white tints. The lacing is comparable but both decrease over time and don't last through the whole drink. The smell is as advertised with good chocolate bouquet. A slight milky quality is limited but could be associated with the chocolate.

The taste is a good strong malty stout. Strong roasted malt and chocolate tones are noticeable. The chocolate taste is very good and has a great coco taste to it. A stronger roasted taste comes out more then the smell would indicate. The hops are minor but do a great job extenuating the chocolate feel. The beer has a medium body but is very enjoyable to taste.

I used to drink HC Berger's beers in college and I'm glad he's back in business. This is a good beer from a good brewer.

Picked up a single at Badger Liquor on State St. here in Madison.

Pours a standard stout black with a disappointing total lack of head, a few tan wisps of foam are all there is to see here. Smell is actually quite nice - rich chocolate and coffee malt aromas with an underlying hop presence. Taste is another let down after the promising nose - some bitter burnt coffee, and a substantial hop bite. Quite a bit hoppier than I would have guessed, and hoppier than I like in a stout, let alone a chocolate stout. Mouthfeel is enjoyably carbonated and smooth. This is by no means a bad stout, but disappointing as chocolate stout. Worth a try if you like a hoppier stout though, just not sweet or matly enough for my tastes.

Received the 12 oz bottle fro prAna.
I am sampling at room temp in a pint glass.
The beer pours pitch black with a tan fluffy head of 1 cm floating on the surface. The head retention is good as it remains throughout sampling with only very gradual slight fading leaving tight latticework.
Aroma is roasted malt and chocolate, almost like cocoa powder.
First sip reveals a very silky smooth body with fine gentle carbonation. Flavor is deep chocolate sweetness and some roasted malt on the finish. There is a very faint grassy hop that pokes through the chocolate very briefly but is quickly overtaken by the chocolate sweetness. Very easy to drink and smooth. A nice beer. Not quite as thick as I would expect though.

Dark magenta topped with drooping rings of tan.
Cigarette ash nose, laid on top of stale coffee. Looming in the background are some strange vegetable hues. Like olives or cauliflower or something.
Begins with a washed out, tepid roastedness. Actually, it's more smoky in flavor than anything. Quick and vaque. Baker's chocolate arises along with a flash of vanilla extract. More fleshy vegetables, as clued by the nose, as this rides away suggesting smoked olives, burnt broccoli, and seared cauliflower.
This is a kindegarten stout cursed further with rancid subtleties.
I see they haven't improved the old Berger recipe any. I was hoping freshness was the key....I guess not.
How a brewery can ace a smoked lager and completely fuck up a basic stout is beyond me.

Dark brown out of the bottle, with a hint of red. Cocoa foam fades after a few minutes, leaving some lace. Nose is roasted grain, chocolate overtones, yeast and coffee. Initial taste is sweet, but finishes with a semi-sweet chocolate that is interesting. Just enough hops to keep this stout from being cloyingly chocolaty. Finish is nicely dry, leaving a whole wheat bread aftertaste. Carbonation is gentle, just right. Body is slightly thick, but goes down easy. A good comparison would be with the standard: Young’s Double Chocolate Stout – with which Ft. Collin’s offering compares favorably.

Pours out a raspberry tinted dark brown and sits a deep crimson brown in the glass with a good sized brown head. Fades to a light skim, holding on to the sides leaving few lacings around the glass.

Smells big and roasty, rich grainy presence. Silky chocolate bits paired with a doughy, dark grain bread base. Some burnt coffee aroma.

Tastes lightly sweet up front, big on the roasted end. Semi-soured appearance off the tannins. Mild chocolatey flaovrs. Hop bitterness is in check, slightly sharp and astringent. Finish is fairly dry, still pushing out big roasty flavors.

Smooth and creamy in the mouth with a fine and silky carbonation. Medium-full body, very easy going.

It's quite easy to drink, but not exactly what I would call flavorful; it's fairly one sided. On the other hand, it's not bad, and this 6 pack will find its place.

Pours black with deep red highlights. It has a fluffy brown head that retains well and leaves some lacing.

Its aroma is roasted chocolate and cream.

The flavor is chocolate - kind of sweet, yet roasted and kind of chalky. There is a little raisiney fruitiness and some smokiness (almost like cigarettes). It is pretty dry and has a light bitter finish. Medium bodied, a little watery.

Overall, a pretty good chocolate stout.

It’s got an exploding stout head, tan like the bleached hair on Bacchus’ temples. The color of the darkest grains in the darkest wood. Nice fruit compote aroma, like a dried fruit wreath; dried pit fruits with the stems and pits and all. Holy shit, tastes like cocoa straight up. A dry hop vapor fills the mouth; dad’s burnt biscuits. The carbonation turns the malt from any fruitiness to melted baker’s chocolate. A caramelized fruit quickly burns up in a smokey malt fire cloud, poof it’s gone.
