Notes: 20 years ago when Sam was first cooking up ideas for brews (literally) for his soon to be brewpub, one of the first concoctions tested and implemented was Chicory Stout, a breakfast-themed beer with Mexican Coffee, Chicory, and Licorice root. 20 years later, we’ve brewed a supped up mac-daddy version of this OG Dogfish brew to commemorate the anniversary of Chicory, aptly named Beer for Breakfast. We took the original Chicory recipe, doubled the grain bill to hit 10% ABV, and tricked it out with all other sorts of delicious Breakfast-minded ingredients including lactose sugar (the sugar that lends Milk Stouts their character); barley malt smoked over local Fifer Orchards wood; maple syrup harvested from trees at Northfield Mount Hermon, the Western Massachusetts school where Sam and wife Mariah met; Steve’s Smokey Double Dark roast coffee from J & S Bean Factory in St. Paul Minnesota (a special nod to one of Sam’s favorite bands – The Replacements, who hail from Minnesota and wrote one of Sam’s most beloved songs: Beer for Breakfast); and for the quintessential Delaware breakfast touch – 25 pounds of Rapa Scrapple, which was added to the mash. Huge notes of coffee in the nose give way to sweet, smokey, and savory layers in the flavor which overlap bittersweet chocolate, roasty espresso, and malty undertones. We don’t have much of this one, so come and get it while it lasts!

Stout for breakfast? I never drink stout for breakfast! Of course you can't exactly put scrapple (SCRAPPLE!!!??), spice, coffee and maple syrup into a can of cheap-ass lager, now can you? So let's work through those, but first the basics: looks like a stout with fairly decent head retention and lacing; medium to medium-full in body with a fine-bubbled carbonation that foams it up as it warms to become creamy.

Aroma: I do not smell the scrapple... or do I??? Spicy, and smoky with an ashen character (like the remnants of last nights campfire, or smoke that's been blown across a field). Coffee-like and roasty? Yes, like cold black coffee that's been left overnight. Maple syrup? No, it's not coming through.

Flavor: Scrapple? There is something unusual about it, and it could be, but I'm not sure. Spices, yes. Nothing is distinct, but it has a generic flavor and there is a bite. The coffee comes through clearly, similar to the way it is in the aroma, and the maple syrup makes its way through as well (just enough sweetness). It's rich, but not overblown, and the spice helps bring it to a drying finish as the dark malts steadily erode from the palate.

Final thoughts: Does meat belong in beer? Doesn't matter, does it? - scrapple isn't really "meat" anyway, right? (chuckle) Somehow it does remind me of breakfast, more of the flavor that's left in your mouth after breakfast, but that's close enough for me. It took me back to my days in the Boy Scouts when I was on kitchen detail... and that alone might be worth it. I enjoyed it, and I found it interesting, but more importantly, it's really well balanced and rich in character. Worth trying unless your Muslim or Jewish ;)

This beer tastes like wood and ass. I'm a fan of Dogfish Head, but this beer is just horrible... Is everyone on here on acid?

Pours a dark brown, small head, smells rather nice, but taste is just absent. As a man who's tried both wood and ass before, I think I know what I'm talking about

Appearance - Couldn't tell as I was too busy drinking it.

Nose - Smoke, coffee, roasted barley, caramel, and maple.

Taste - Smokey, sweet, cofeey, unfortunately not scrapply.

Mouthfeel - Smooth like Keith Stone and easy like a Sunday morning.

Overall - Me likey for a good while but not love it long time.

I usually stay away from Dogfish Head given their frequently underwhelming lineup, but despite this beer's high price ($2.99 per 12 oz bottle - at best - in New York), the premise was so good I had to buy it and give Dogfish Head a fair shake.

BOTTLE: 12 fl oz. Brown glass. Label art is fantastic, with a brown and white colour motif. Branded pry-off crown cap. 2016 vintage.

"Ale brewed with scrapple, spices, coffee & maple syrup with coffee added." 7.4% ABV. The lack of any verbiage to the effect of "brewed with natural flavors" on the label is a great sign...

Served cold and allowed to come to temperature over the course of consumption.

HEAD: Standard for a stout. ~3cm of tan colour foam. Not quite silky, but smooth and soft enough, with a nice creamy frothy consistency that seems robust. A nice coating of lacing forms on the glass' sides as it recedes, which takes a good 5 minutes - not too shabby in a 7.4% ABV beer.

BODY: Predictably, it's an opaque black. No yeast/lees or sediment visible within.

Appears well-carbonated. It's not eye catching or unique within its style, but there are no faults and it's generally enticing.

AROMA: The coffee does jump out, evoking an interesting slightly roasty java character with powdery notes of cocoa. Creamy. Chocolate malts, dark malts, Powdery cassia. I search for maple syrup but don't find it, though there's plenty of sweetness in there both from malts and lactose sugar. I don't detect any overt roasted barley, unfortunately, but it doesn't seem too sweet by any stretch. I find no smoke/smoked malt whatsoever.

No overt hops or yeasty notes. Alcohol isn't noticeable. I find no off-notes.

The coffee coupled with the sweetness is effective, if tried and true. I'm excited to try this, but it's not shaping up to be a unique or special coffee stout; they'd have to go still richer on the coffee and commit way more to the maple syrup to really evoke an interesting take on the style.

Aromatic intensity is moderate.

TASTE & TEXTURE: Powdery yet smooth, with a nice full body and apt thickness for the style and premise that doesn't cross the line into syrupy or overly viscous. Wet yet unrefreshing (to style). Pretty approachable for its well-hidden ABV.

The premise of the beer had such potential for complexity, but the build is surprisingly straightforward, eschewing any smoke(d malt), maple syrup, or overt spices in favour of a relatively simple lactose sugar, chocolate malt, dark malt, and mild coffee build. The coffee is fine, but doesn't stand out in any way really. Great coffee stouts offer really interesting or unique coffee flavours, evoking rich Indonesian java, sweet dessert-like Vietnamese coffee, complex Kopi Luwak, etc. This isn't your buddy's Folger's homebrew, but the coffee is underwhelming.

Maple syrup isn't vivid or expressive by any stretch, and gets buried beneath the more prominent lactose sugar sweetness. There's no roasted barley or smoke present, both of which would help balance out the brew and give it more complexity and depth. Charred or burnt flavours would also help.

Not that it's imbalanced...sweet as it is, I could kill a six-pack in one sitting; it's approachable and somehow they kept the sweetness in check. Not with hops, though...I'm not really sure how they did it.

Flavour duration, depth, and intensity are all average. It's nice enough stuff for what it is, but Dogfish Head's ambitions don't seem to have been too lofty. Spice-wise, I find nothing; it's powdery, and I thought I picked up on cassia in the aroma, but there's no cassia or cinnamon in the taste.

The mouthfeel works because it's creamy and soft, which plays nicely to the chocolate and lactose sugar, evoking a milk chocolate vibe. I wouldn't say the mouthfeel elevates the beer as a whole or really goes above and beyond to accentuate specific notes, but the carbonation is about right and it isn't oily, gushed, hot or boozy.

I find no off-flavours.

OVERALL: Enjoyable drinkable fare, but in a style so easy to find widely distributed superior beers in, I struggle to imagine how this competes...especially at a wallet-crushing $18 a six pack in New York (where a beer like, say, Victory At Sea runs $12.99 per six pack in the same venues). It's some of the better Dogfish Head work I've had recently, but then I don't buy Dogfish Head often, if only because the quality of their beers is rarely as high as their prices. Price notwithstanding, it's a competently crafted expression of the style I'd be happy to buy even if it doesn't really deliver on the maple syrup/smoked malt/spiced elements of its terrific premise. I'm glad I only bought one bottle.

I wouldn't recommend this to others, if only because Left Hand's milk stout is much cheaper (and better) and Founders' Breakfast Stout is widely available in the same market. But it's a pretty good basic coffee milk stout.

2016 bottle. Pours black with an inch of foam. Big roasted malt, milky, anise, light coffee nose. Roasted malt and coffee taste, hickory (yes), milky, pretty light bodied, thin at times. I reckon that milkiness detracts; I drink my coffee black.

12oz bottle: This one pours an inky dark brown color. There was a small light brown head that didn’t linger long. It has a nice nose. Roasted barley, coffee, some chocolate, smokiness, maybe some floral notes also. A lot going on here. The taste is also quite good. Chocolate, roasted malts, coffee, a touch of sweetness from the lactose, some chicory. Don’t think the scrapple is adding any notable flavors, but I like the idea of my favorite breakfast meat in my beer!

Form the 12 oz bottle in a snifter. This unique brew pours a deep obsidian with
a nice head of light brown foam that subsides to a thick ring, light pool, and nice light
lacing. Nose of heavy brewers licorice, very heavy coffee, lactose sugars, nice smoke notes,
and a nice dose of dark cocoa, and a touch of maple. Flavors exceed the noise with licorice and
smoke notes with heavy moderately bitter coffee and cocoa on all sides with cream hitting nicely on
the sides (lactose) with a hint of maple on the rear and rich char notes. Very nice mouth feel; slick,
coating, full on the taste, and a sweet char touched aftertaste. Overall a very nice brew with the right
amount of smoke and the usual suspects to keep it nice and interesting....the scrapple I can not detect,
yet it is still VERY good.

Nose is coffee and pepper. Taste is coffee and a pepperiness up front follow by a roasted and smoked malts. Light smoke on the finish. The body is a bit thinner than I'd like.

Poured into a Chimay goblet near room temperature bottled on 11/07/16. Pours a very attractive near pitch black, with a two inch light brown head that leaves behind very attractive rings of lace, with nice retention.

Smell is roasty coffee grounds, chipotle, cocoa nibs, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, and a little smoke and sweet pipe tobacco.

Taste follows nicely roasty coffee, smokey chipotle, cocoa powder, cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla, and sweet pipe tobacco.

Mouthfeel is a creamy medium, moderate carbonation and it works wonderfully, definitely a little dry, and excellent drinkability, but it drinks bigger than its 7.4% ABV.

Overall this is a very good beer, definitely has some wintery spices, but almost subdued for DFH and that is a compliment. Well done.

Pours a very dark brown, nearly black, color with a small brown head. Recedes very quickly, leaving almost no lacing.

Aroma is absolutely dominated by coffee -- punches you right in the nose before your glass even gets there. Keep it there a bit longer and the licorice will be there, with a little bit of sting from the alcohol. It's sweet, but I'm not getting the syrup from the bottles description.

The syrup arrives in the taste and combines with the coffee. It's a interesting taste but hard to say if it works. Lots going on here; coffee, licorice, syrup, and cherry and plum. As you progress the flavors start to mesh a bit better. Chicory is evident and gives the beer a wooded, smoky quality. Again, the flavors are all very distinct (and tasty) but not sure how well they are achieved as a whole. I've never been a morning beer person (I've had one beer in the AM, wife and kids were gone and I mowed the lawn early while drinking a Grain Belt Nordeast). I can see this working as a morning beer. No bite from the alcohol and easy to drink, with plenty of easily identifiable breakfast flavors.

Low carbonation, sweet and smooth. Drinkable for a Stout, especially with the moderate ABV. One of the boozier sweet Stouts I've seen.

Overall, Dogfish continues its reputation of unique and interesting beers. Good flavors and good drinkability make it a solid, if unspectacular, beer. Definitely worth a try, especially if you engage in the beer's name.

Pours pitch black with a creamy frothy brown foam head. Smells like sweet spice, savory herbs, mild smoke, roasted coffee, dark chocolate, hint of maple, molasses, pork scraps, with earthy herbal grassy pine. Tastes like roasted coffee, sweet spice, savory herbs, pork scrapple, mild smoke, dark chocolate, hint of maple, molasses, with earthy herbal grassy pine. Feels medium bodied, creamy and slick with moderate low carbonation. Overall a really nice and unique breakfast stout.
