Brewed by:
Dogfish Head Craft Brewery
Delaware, United States

Style: American Double / Imperial IPA

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 10.00%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
This oak-aged gentle giant has been gaining popularity over the past few years and is now available year-round.

For Burton Baton, we brew two "threads," or batches, of beer: an English-style old ale and an imperial IPA.

After fementating the beers separately in our stainless tanks, they're transferred and blended together in one of our large oak tanks. Burton Baton sits on the wood for about a month.

When enjoying the Burton Baton, you'll find an awesome blend of the citrus notes from Northwestern hops melding with woody, vanilla notes from the oak. The wood also tends to mellow the 10% ABV of Burton, so tread cautiously!

12 oz bottle poured into a snifter.

A: pours a nice deep orange with about a finger of head which fades into a nice ring cap of foam over the beer, especially the edges.

S: citrusy, tropical, fruity hops upfront on the nose, a faint smell of oak, melon.

T: fruity, tropical hops much like the nose. deliciously hoppy. dry finish. alcohol is hidden well. the oak is nice very present. still tastes delicious just as an Imiperial ipa.

M: good mouth feel for the style. dry, and crisp. leaves the palate coated with a linger hop bitterness. very good

O: this is a delicious beer. wish it wasnt so pricey.

Well hello, 2011 vintage 12 oz bottle! It's been a while since I've had one of these, so can't give a fair comparison on a fresh bottle...

Pours with a HUGE head that took several minutes to shrink from 3 inches to 1/4 inch. TONS of lacing in my snifter.

Smells like a malty double IPA. Hops are no longer the main event in the nose. I'm getting some hops, sweet malt and some caramel.

As far as taste goes, the hops are still present, but have settled to standard IPA characteristics; no double IPA taste here. Soft on the palate. Slightly sweet and oaky (imagine that).

Very good showing of an oak aged brew. Wish it would have been the first beer I rated today, as I think the Pannepot probably overwhelmed my senses. Damn you, vile and delicious quad!
