Notes / Commercial Description:
What you have here is a serious India Pale Ale shacking up and hunkering down with mango and apricots. At the same time! Romantic Chemistry is brewed with an intermingling of mangos, apricots and ginger, and then dry-hopped with three varieties of hops to deliver a tropical fruit aroma and a hop-forward finish. It’s fruity, it’s hoppy, it’s tasty!

12 oz. bottle poured into a DFH branded Spiegelau IPA glass.

A- Golden, great clarity. Head is light tan, dense, and towering. Great lacing.

S- Strong tropical notes. Mango, citrus, grapefruit. Some pine. Faint stone fruit.

T- Sweet tropical fruit, some citrus, orange, but doesn't overpower subtle dry notes of grapefruit and pine.

M- Medium body. Smooth, lightly tingling carbonation. Finishes with a subtle bittersweetness.

O- I get more tropical notes out of this; mango and grapefruit. The apricot seems to just lend some sweetness.

$ 7.41 (Including tax)/mixed four pack ($ 0.154/oz) at Meijer’s in Wyoming, MI.
Bottled on 4/15/17. Stored at grocery refrigerator temperature then at 42 degrees in my beer reefer. Served at 42 degrees in a hand washed and dried Jester King snifter.
Aroma – faint apricot. It becomes more noticeable as the beer warms.
Head – large (Maximum 4.2 cm, aggressive pour), light tan, medium density, average retention, diminishing to an irregular four to five mm ring fed by effervescence. There are some drag marks from the receding head and a rocky partial layer.
Lacing – fair. Very uneven and raggedy partial ring of tiny to small bubbles.
Body – amber, cloudy, effervescent. Looks like some type of fruit juice.
Flavor – starts slightly sweet and fruity with no distinct mango or apricot. Zero ginger. Malt, hops, and alcohol flavors are absent as is any trace of diacetyl. If there wasn’t a faint gastric alcohol burn, this could be some off the wall fruit drink.
Palate – medium, almost syrupy, soft carbonation.

While not being offensive, I don’t find this beer particularly desirable. Definitely one and done.

Appearance 3.5, Aroma 3.5, Flavor 3.5, Palate 3.5, Overall 3.5.

I tried this at Scottys Brewhouse in Indianapolis. It poured a clear amber with thin white head that did not leave much lace. The scent had hints of pine and floral spice. The taste had a hop spice that leaned toward pine. The mouthfeel was medium in body with good carbonation. Overall it was ok.

Dogfish Head "Romantic Chemistry"
$6/pint on tap @ Union Tavern, Philadelphia, PA on 4 August 2017

Notes: Clear amber-copper body beneath a creamy head of off-white. Aroma of soft ginger, sweet malt, and tropical fruit. The flavor follows with a nice blend between the malt, the fruitiness, and the delicate ginger. Is this real fruit added, or just hops? I can't remember. I'm glad the ginger's there to make it a little bit different from so many other tropical fruit IPAs on the market; and to help balance it. It's not too spicy, nor too light that you don't get it - just perfect. Medium bodied and gently crisp. Firm bitterness. Dry finish with some light spiciness lingering gently. Very nicely done.

Straight outta the bottle at the Village Tavern in Salem, MA... lots of sharp herbal and earthy citrus, fruit and flower... medium feel but some edge to it, as well as a little tingle... I like ginger in certain scenarios but I suspect it was responsible for some of the elements in this that may have detracted from its scores for me...

A-dark amber with two fingers worth of cream colored head

S-aroma is of peaches and apricots, citrus, and caramel

T-taste is similar to the smell with a caramel malt base, peaches, apricots, and citrus hops

M-medium body, somewhat light carbonation

Overall while I would have liked to try this when it was fresher, still pretty decent even after a few months
