Romantic ChemistryRomantic Chemistry
Notes: What you have here is a serious India Pale Ale shacking up and hunkering down with mango and apricots. At the same time! Romantic Chemistry is brewed with an intermingling of mangos, apricots and ginger, and then dry-hopped with three varieties of hops to deliver a tropical fruit aroma and a hop-forward finish. It’s fruity, it’s hoppy, it’s tasty!

Clear, golden/amber hue, solid, lasting head of creamy foam.

In the nose: soft bitterness, big fruit. Plenty of tropical, some citrus. I'm urged on to drink...

In the mouth: Plenty of hop bitterness at flavor at the start, floods the palate, then on comes the fruit. Never too sweet, and not too bitter, or, I should say, just bitter enough. Hopheads like me won't be disappointed, others, maybe. Yum. Flat-out brilliant balance in this one. Just right on every aspect. Medium bodied, with a great texture and never-quitting fruit flavor mingling with the hops.

Consumed April 2016.

Pours the color of some older dipas, orange/amber with 1/4" white head. Can't say the commercial tug job was wrong, there are stone fruit notes and ginger. Smells like more of a Rare Barrel wild ale than an ipa, but hey its Dogfish Head, whattdya expect? Its a nice aroma. But will we see the first ipa w/ ginger that is good?

The taste isn't really hoppy, its overshadowed by all the adjuncts. I don't like fruited ipas, I don't like ginger in like, anything but that one Rare Barrel beer. It doesn't change much here. I mean, did I like it more than I expected? Yes. Would I buy it again? No. Its a bit of a sweet, fruited beer, which makes me wonder if doing this sort of thing is cheaper than proprietary hops. On the upside, mango and apricot are some of my more well liked fruits in other styles of beer, so I didn't hate this, it just doesn't fit into my ideal ipa mold.

Bottled February 2016; drank 3/3/16 @ the Yarchives.

See-through ruby red appearance.

A rough pour yielded a huge khaki head; strong, frothy lace.

Apricot, mild ginger & faint cane sugar notes in the nose.

Medium mouthfeel.

Mild ginger & faint apricot flavors up front; a hint of cane sugar on the finish. VERY mild, to the point of being boring.

What's the point?

Poured from a bottle into a pint glass. Pours cloudy orange red with a fluffy white head. Smells of citrus and earthy hops. Tastes of citrus and earthy hops with a good grain backbone. Beer is light/medium bodied with good carbonation and a smooth finish. Overall, a very good beer.

L: brilliant amber with copper-orange highlights. Streams of bubbles rapidly rise to the surface under a lacy 2.5" cream colored foam stand with good retention

S: Fruit is the main aroma offering a blend of mango, a hint of apricot, ginger and tropical fruit

T: Ginger leads the flavors with mango and apricot support and tropical fruit highlights from the hops

F: very creamy texture with a medium to medium light body and medium plus carbonation

O: A full flavored easy drinking beer for lovers of mango, apricot and ginger.

This pours a nice bold honey/copper color with a nice white lacy retaining for aroma a mild fruity/hops les on hops than fruit...more mango-ish.
Palate taste is complex in flavors...very adventureish (if such a word?) in fruits an some hops.
As for the mouth has a slight sharp with the fruits coming thru nicely.
All in all...a great chermistry in body and flavor.

12 oz. Bottle sample. Dogfishhead is sooo "old school" these days.....

I poured 5/16 th's into a Bissell Brothers samplers glass and it came out looking like honey-amber. Light, white foam topping spread out pretty quick, solid ring and no lace.

The sweet, honey and caramel malty sweetness pops out most. Classic sweet-toned DFH style. Fruit all, peach, apricot...?etc....additions. Maybe more fruity tones from the hops...did I mention the big sweet maltiy, whatevers.

First sip, zippy and peppery earthy tones, sour-edged fruits....combo fruit punch style. Malt...caramel, honey and black pepper. Medium body texture with a zippy, peppery deal, malty, long in the finish.

DFH doesnt conform to whatshappening "right now" in beergeek land.

L- Dark blood orange and amber golden beer with a lacy tiny head.
S- Mango and apricot mix followed by a caramelized malt finish and ending in a bitter-y piney aroma.
T- The flavor is a combination of sour and tartness, followed by a slight bitter turn. The flavors of pine, fruit (mango and apricot) and caramelized malt combine for an overall light and intimate flavor. Pretty nice.
F- Sticky and a bit thick. Low carb.
O- Overall a very decent little India Pale Ale. I wish it had more mango and apricot flavors, but I will say the two fruits meld very well with the malt and the even slighter bitter hop make this beer and interesting and good sipper. It's just lacking pizzazz and isn't very well grounded.

As with every dogfish head beer I've had, just look at the last word in the name and that's what you get.
This "apricot, mango, ginger" IPA tastes like an IPA. The same way a "vanilla cream soda with sprinkles, caramel syrup, and maraschino cherries lager" will taste just like every other lager. I have no idea why I keep being tricked into buying their beers, they are absolutely pedestrian.

Tasted from a 12 oz bottle.

L - Color is burnished gold, verging on amber. Nice clarity. Off-white head is not overly active or persistent. Some lacing.

S - Hop aromas stand out, reminding me primarily of apricots with other earthy, flowery notes. Malt comes in later as a sweetbread-like note.

T - Flavors are dominated by hops and a spicy/herbal impression in the mid-palate. Malt only shows through in a sweet finish.

F - Medium body. Low to moderate carbonation seems creamy. Medium hops bitterness. Low alcohol warmth.

O - This beer has interesting fruit (or fruity hops) and herbs aromas and flavors. The description says it was brewed with ginger, but that is not obvious to me, although it probably contributes to the herbal impression. Still, as an IPA, the interesting notes don't overcome the lack of hops bitterness and sweet finish that detract from it. It's a decent beer, but not a great IPA.

It's not fruity hoppy or tasty. It's just a muddled mess with no real character. You get hints of the mango, apricots and hopa but it seems to be another good idea poorly executed.

Pours an clear Orange with an off white head that fades away, nice lacing. Aroma is mostly tropical fruits,, I'm thinking mangoes and papaya. Flavor follows with a choppy finish, medium bodied, nicely carbonated. Not a bad beer, but I probably won't seek this one out.

From the bottle, it pours a clear reddish amber with a modest head. Lacing. Fruit in the nose, not the expected citrus but maybe the apricot/mango called for on the label. Taste follows nose, with the fruit definitely in the taste.

On the darker side and hazy with a light tan head, this looks a bit like an old school IPA. Scent is not your normal citrus IPA but more of an apricot/overripe peach scent with a sweet note. It’s got some sweetness and some bite to it and I guess some “fruit flavors” to the taste. There is a bit of mild astringent flavor on the end with some clash going on here with the caramel malt. It’s creamy and more medium on the mouthfeel. Edit, think I’m may have undercut this brew slightly, I’m going from 3.5 to 3.75 on the flavor as it mellows it gets better as you have a few.

12 oz. bottle poured into a tulip glass.

L---Clear, burnt orange color. Nice, thick, slightly off-white head that stuck around for a while and left good lacing.

S---Milder than expected. Not as hoppy, either. Fruity. Tropical & apricot.

T---Not as hoppy as expected for an IPA. Fruitiness is dominant. Tropical, mango & apricot.

F---Strong carbonation gives it a light, bubbly feel. Or at least lighter and bubblier than expected for an IPA.

O---Many things about this one are not what I was expecting from an IPA. That said, it works for what it is, a fruity IPA. I can see several of these going down on a warm day. Hey, it's 83 degrees today....

Pours a clear, reddish orange with a thick, off-white, head. Smell is sweet, with notes of mango and apricot but not much in the way of hops. Taste follows, sweet up front, notes of apricot, mango, malt, and a little bit of hops. Subdued bitterness. Medium body. It's an okay IPA, easy to drink, fruity and a little too sweet for my tastes though it might be tasty to those who like a fruity ipa.

Pours a crystal clear honey orange with an off white head that leaves nice lacing. The aroma is ripe mangos and apricots with a hint of dank hops. The flavor is a touch sour unfortunately. I get all of the label ingredients, including the ginger (could have a tad more IMO). The feel is crisp and well carbonated. A nice enough beer, but not great.

Bottled nabbed at a beer store in Austin, TX.

7.2% ABV. "IPA."

"Fruity, hoppy, and tasty" just about covers it. It's a refreshing medium-bodied fruity and estery beer with fresh notes of mango and apricot that never feel too artificial. Malt backbone is lovely, injecting some pale malt sweetness into the mix to temper any hop bitterness.

Smooth, soft, wet, and approachable. Not oily, gushed, hot, or boozy.

Highly drinkable fare, though its hop profile takes a backseat to its fruit profile. It's a nice fruited IPA if you're into that substyle, and while its price would keep me from buying it by the sixer I do think it's well worth trying and one of the better recent efforts I've tried from Dogfish Head.

I'm literally drinking this beer while I'm typing this. Poured into a snifter, I'm in love with that color. It's a more moderate amber, and that automatically makes me think about mangoes. Filtered and just really nice to look at. Automatically, I don't get much of the hops, but I do pick up subtle fruit notes. Kinda has this weird funk, but not like a farmhouse IPA. I'm liking the taste of this beer. The fruit is maybe a bit more subtle than I was expecting, and maybe I wouldn't mind a bit more. I can get the ginger on the back end, too. It's pretty subtle as well, but I like that in this case. I was honestly scared to try this because I didn't want too much ginger. I feel like the hops maybe get lost in it a bit, but that may also be because the accent the fruit and such so well. Enjoyable. Probably wouldn't buy a six pack, but a single is legit. Worth a couple of your bucks to try

A: Pours a clear moderately-dark orange brown, with a thin layer of off-white/light tan head. Less-tan-average quantity of quite tiny carbonation bubbles visible rising up the beer at a slower than average rate. 4
S: Dankness, fruit (mango, apricot, hints of other tropical fruit), resinous hops. Honestly the smell is a tad weird. Makes me think of rotting fruit. 3.5
T: Not really what I was expecting the taste. Tastes like a pumpkin beer was mixed with a slightly resinous IPA. I’m guessing the pumpkin beer feel is due to the combination of fruit (the mango/apricot) and the spice (ginger). I have to say I’m fairly disappointed. DFH usually does better. 3.25
F: Creamier than I was expecting, but still with a strong carbonation level (above-average intensity). Medium to medium-light body. 4.25
O: This beer smells and tastes a bit off. Not recommended. 3.5

T: Ginger, apricot & faint citrus up front. Apricot, ginger, a little dryness, as this warms. Finishes with ginger, apricot & a little grassyness

Really strong IPA. Deliciously fruity, dry, and refreshing. Attractive glossy orange color with moderate head and lacing. The mango, apricot, and ginger combine with the hops to create a beguiling earthy aroma reminiscent of balsam wood. I generally avoid fruit-added beers but this one really works because of its balance and subtlety. Nice one, DFH! [on tap]
