Very Good
Flesh & Blood IPAFlesh & Blood IPA
Notes: An honest to goodness IPA brewed with a bounty of real citrus including lemon flesh, blood orange juice plus orange and lemon peel. A combination of Warrior, Centennial, and a rare experimental hop to perfectly complement the citrus ingredients and flavor. Flesh & Blood balances the resinous hoppy characteristics of an American IPA with the explosive, zesty fruitiness and subtle dry tartness of citrus to deliver a highly quaffable ale that’s incredibly unique and lovely to down the whole year round.

look: 3.5 | smell: 4 | taste: 3.75 | feel: 3.5 | overall: 3.75

Poured from a 12 oz can:

Pours hazy amber with a very bright reddish copper tint. Head is off-white and a bit thin but has good retention around the circumference of the glass.

The nose is fruity and hoppy, but maybe some caramel too. Lots of blood orange and a bit of a zesty lemon and hip smell too.

Taste is more dry than expected, but not in a bad way. Caramel sweetness is mild but present. Finish is largely citrus, mainly lemon and blood orange, almost as if I had just eaten a blood orange by itself. Hops are there but they aren’t coming through as much as expected.

Feel - very tart and medium carbonation. Body is medium. I get a little bit of bitter citrusy residue on the tongue afterwards.

Overall - in terms of IPAs, good, but maybe not exceptional. Points for being unique for sure. To me it seems like something that’s part IPA, part Gose, part Sour Ale.

Lightly hazed, bright crimson coloring, prodigious, ivory head.

In the nose: Fruity, lightly hoppy, but slightly muted. Pleasant, if soft-spoken.

In the mouth: Boom! Here comes the bitterness, right with the fruit. Nice and tart. Getting the blood orange along with the bitter, and the refreshment is coming along nicely. Great balance of bitter and sweet. Very nice.

I'm writing from memory, but this was a miss for me. Had it last night at McNellie's in Tulsa. I saw the name and expected a blood orange IPA but that's not what I tasted. There was a funky taste that I can't describe. A bit of rootbeer? Tar? Bark? I don't know. I just scanned the reviews to see if someone else identified the taste that was off-putting to me. Sorry Dogfish, I know you're good!

Had at The Peerless Grille, Anniston, Alabama, on draft into pint tumbler.

Nice amber-gold, nice lacing, good balance between resin, fruit and caramel. Not as fruity as I would expect, Flesh & Blood drinks more like a traditional American IPA.

On-tap at Barcade, Brooklyn, NY

A: The beer is crystal clear coppery amber in color and has no visible carbonation. It poured with a half finger high dense off white head.
S: Slight aromas of lemon and orange zest are present in the nose.
T: The taste is similar to the smell but is a bit stronger with flavors of blood oranges and lemons. There is only a slight amount of bitterness.
M: It feels light- to medium-bodied on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This beer is easy to drink but seems more like a fruited beer and less like an IPA.

Serving type: on-tap

Poured into a tall clear pint glass. Has a rich, deep copper color (perhaps a mixture of ruby and and gold) with finger thick foamy white head with decent retention and good lacing.

Like the beverage mentions, the key notes in the aroma are the oranges and lemons. I also smell caramel and faint pineapple. Other notes of mandarin, grass, grapefruit, bread malt, and mango.

Taste isn't as notable as the aroma would suggest, but nonetheless bitter citrus is present on the palette and in the aftertaste. I taste citrus peels pretty well while the other notes are more passive. Medium-light in body feeling.

Ordered as a pint arrived cold with a disappearing head. Bronze color. Smell of pine and citrus. Thick mouthfeel. Nice bitterness but well balanced. A great drinker with an appeal for food. This is a great brew by DFH

12 ounce can poured into a tulip glass.

L---Ruby/gold color. Thick, off-white head with good retention and excellent lacing. A real looker.

S---Lighter than the taste, but orange & lemon are clearly the dominant aromas, as advertised. Hoppy, as well.

T---Strong orange & lemon flavors. Hoppy & citrusy & bright.

F---A touch astringent from the high dose of citrus. A slight creaminess at the finish.

O---A damn fine effort, but a damn good brewery. I'd have this one again if I came across it.

Bottled 6/24/16; drank 8/3/16 @ the Yarchives.

See-through ruby red appearance.

A rough pour yielded a small, noisy bright white head which quickly dissipated; minimal lace.

Blood orange, fresh cut grass & faint pineapple notes in the nose.

Medium mouthfeel.

Blood orange & mild cane sugar flavors up front; fresh cut grass & faint citrus notes on the finish.

This smelled great but was too dry for me to enjoy. OK at best.

Pours a clear, amber color with a nice, white head that clings to the glass. Smell is not surprisingly citrus heavy, some notes of pine hops. Taste is oranges, light amount of malt, some notes of pine, grapefruit. Soft, medium body. Dry finish. Fruit heavy, obviously. If you want a change from the bitter IPAs this might be your jam. Not as heavy as a NEIPA.

Appearance:
Dark copper, hazy. Medium rising bubbles. Thick rocky head. Very good head retention. Leaves a wonderful lacing behind.

Aroma:
Lots of citrus, grapefruit, mandarin, orange, just a little tropical. Sweet bready, candy-like caramel.

Taste/Finish/Body:
Burst of citrus, grapefruit, orange peel, lemon, mandarin, some pineapple. Malt background towards the end, a little candy-like caramel. Finish is tangy, semi-dry, lingers medium. Medium bodied, juicy, slight sticky, moderate carbonation, highly drinkable.

Overall:
It's an excellent American IPA.

Looks like a glass of a dark sparkling rose wine. Mini al had that receeds very quickly and leaves no lacing. Smells of citrus. Tastes of blood orange, lemon and lemon peel. Not much depth to the flavor profile. Light bodied, moderate carbonation, very easy drinking beer but not very complex.

Look: Pours (from can) a light copper with effervescent, quickly receding head
Smell: Quite unique with expected hop nose bite but a generous dose of citrus, probably more so than any previous IPA I have had. No surprise given the recipe.
Taste: Up-front citrus with the hops pulling through stronger towards the end. Balancing biscuity malt base end-taste.
Feel: Medium mouth feel, a bit slick on the tongue.
Overall: unique, pleasant IPA that I would love to try on tap some day. Pretty enjoyable.

Saw rating, and gave it a try, hoped I was given the wrong ale. But alas, I passed better known IPAs for somethin’ different. The fruit certainly doesn’t add to the hops.. rather I believe muddied the flavors.

12 oz can dated 8/14/18. Poured into SN Spiegl.

Pours a caramel color with hints of blood red and light amber syrup both, depending on what angle you behold it. Tall yellow head of 3 fingers, destroying the glass.

Aroma of ripe fruits - grapefruit, pink grapefruit, orange, mandarin orange, pineapple, mango, and lactose. It smells very similar to a juicy NE IPA.

Very soft profile! The malt is creamy and smooth - not grainy or harsh in the slightest. The hops lean fruity, with slight grassy undertones. Red grapefruit abounds, with pomelo, tangerine, lime, and oranges. Lemonheads. That note kind of contradicts with the rest, but if you are thinking tropical, it's gorgeous. Fades on grapefruit rind and pink grapefruit flesh.

Feel is creamy as all get-out; very smooth, slight resins on the finish.

Overall, this is quite unlike any IPA you've had before. My favorite points are the softness, the sweetness, and the pink grapefruit presence. It's like a creamy pink grapefruit parfait with lemon salt. I'll bet on the beach this thing would bring tears to your eyes. I have to rate this for what it is - it's highly enjoyable.

Taste: somewhat strange with the sourness of the lemon flesh. There was some tanginess from the orange peel, but its flavor is overshadowed by the hoppiness.

Not exactly a very good offering due to the sourness not blending in with the hoppiness, creating two poles of taste in one's mouth.

Look- amber color with about a fingers width of head. The head disappears pretty quickly though.
Smell- hoppy and piney with trace amounts of citrus.
Taste- The hops bite the tounge, with a nice soft bitterness. I can also just barely taste the citrus, but I think the citrus that dominates this ipa is citrus peel, not the pulp. Which is shame imo.
Feel- This has a surprisingly nice mouth feel ranging from medium to heavy.
Overall- Not a bad IPA, I feel that it’s just missing something. It’s still drinkable though.

Canned on 10/01/18, consumed on 10/16/18.

Pours a deep copper red with a finger of khaki head.

Smells of bright citrus fruits, specifically lemon, (duh) darker malts, and pine.

Taste is an intriguing mix of the citrus and rich maltiness with a pine hoppiness filling out the taste. The botterness is fairly low, a little too low in my opinion and the mouthfeel is lacking. I do like that the malts give it a sort of red ale vibe, a style I wish there were more of in the 7% + range.

Flesh & Blood is an intriguing beer that fairs better than Dogfish Head's other recent culinary inspired beer, Lupu Luau. However it still suffers from an issue that seems to be ever present with Dogfish and that is that many of their beers sound great, but that doesn't always translate to an awesome beer. Overall, its decent.

A; crystal clear; orangish copper in color; 1 finger off white head that receded to a wispy cap; nice lacing;

S: blood orange and pine;

T: it's a mish mash of flavors that don't necessarily go together; blood orange is there, but not prominent; the lemon comes through as bitter lemon pith; a bit of pine; the bitterness is harsh;

M: medium bodied; moderate carbonation; dry finish;

O: disappointing - so much potential with the combination of ingredients;

This IPA pours a perfectly clear, fairly dark russet color with a medium frothy white head. The color is certainly dark for an IPA. The smell is quite citrusy with orange and lemon coming to mind, but there is also a noticeable malt presence with some caramel and toasted biscuit notes. It has all the flavors of the scent and not much else to be honest. The body is medium, maybe a bit higher than the average IPA. The finish is somewhat dry and there is a very mild lingering bitterness. I love the idea of putting blood orange into an IPA, but I would have personally imagined it completely differently. First I think that the flavor would be better in more of a west coast style IPA with a lighter body and less malt character. Second, even though blood orange is a strong flavor, I think that they could have actually kicked it up just a bit, especially if this had greater hop character. This is a solid, easy drinking IPA, but I feel like it could have been so much more.
