Notes / Commercial Description:
An honest to goodness IPA brewed with a bounty of real citrus including lemon flesh, blood orange juice plus orange and lemon peel. A combination of Warrior, Centennial, and a rare experimental hop to perfectly complement the citrus ingredients and flavor. Flesh & Blood balances the resinous hoppy characteristics of an American IPA with the explosive, zesty fruitiness and subtle dry tartness of citrus to deliver a highly quaffable ale that’s incredibly unique and lovely to down the whole year round.

i wanted to like this a lot more than i did. with dogfish being this late to the blood orange ipa game, i expected their contribution would be quite a bit more radical and dialed in, and while this is fine and drinkable and tastes fresh and all, i wanted it to be more different and distinct, but it tastes like a slightly better version than most of the rest of them. the lemon is a great add, as the tartness and acidity of it keep the sweetness of the blood orange in check. these have a tendency to get more fruity than beery, and this one doesnt, which is its other great strength. its malty enough to be grainy on the base, and the hops are sturdy and present not just in the finish but all the way through, and its bitter in the end, not orangey and sweet. coming in at a beer drinkers abv too! so while this beer gets past a lot of the common traps and pitfalls of this style that is somehow still sticking around, i dont think the beer is as dynamic or compelling as it should be. its a little overly malty, doesnt drink as light and bubbly as the flavors suggest it should, but the fruit and the hops go together well, and like all dogfish head beers, its worth picking up at least once to try it. i like their new coconut ipa a lot better, but this is pretty cool too. still waiting for this blood orange ipa trend to die though...

The brewers at Dogfish Head have always preffered a sense of balance even in their hop-dominant IPA. And as the trend of fruit additions to complement hop character sweeps the craft beer landscape, the Dogfish brewers get in on the action with bursts of citrus and a firm malty support.

Deep copper and modestly hazed, the frothy ale sheds a host of aromatic perfume. The scent of lemon, orange, apricot and sun tea precede a malty-sweet flavor of caramel, honey, shortcake and toasted granola.

With the malt sweetness and bready body continues to show its sweetened support, the hop flavors lay on a resinous and bright taste of red grapefruit, blood orange, lemon, lime and berries. With the addition of lemon and orange peels, the citrus oils give a bitter taste and a radiant crispness on the middle palate. Herbal flavors of tea, spruce and grass trend bitter and eventually command the finish.

Medium-bodied and stubbornly balanced, the fruit-forward IPA remains only slightly hop-balanced as the sweetness and fruitiness continues to deliver nuances of stone fruit and jam while the hopping rates are fairly modest and the beer dries only moderately. Still, the hops win out in the end with a long after-tow of the orchard.

12 ounce bottle into signature tulip glass, bottled on 10/12/2016. Pours crystal clear deep orange/copper color with a 1 finger fairly dense and fluffy light khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings around the glass, with a moderate amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Aromas of big grapefruit, blood orange, lime, pineapple, peach, passion fruit, mango, berries, lemon/orange peel, light pine, caramel, toasted biscuit, light nuttiness, herbal, and floral/grassy earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of bright citrus/tropical hops, citrus juice/peels, and moderate dark/bready malt notes; with great strength. Taste of big grapefruit, blood orange, lime, pineapple, peach, passion fruit, mango, berries, lemon/orange peel, light pine, caramel, toasted biscuit, light nuttiness, herbal, and floral/grassy earthiness. Light-moderate pine/herbal/citrus peel/rind bitterness and light fruit tartness on the finish; with lingering notes of grapefruit, blood orange, lime, pineapple, peach, passion fruit, mango, berries, lemon/orange peel, pine, caramel, toasted biscuit, and herbal/floral/grassy earthiness on the finish for a while. Damn nice complexity, robustness, and balance of bright citrus/tropical hops, citrus juice/peels, and moderate dark/bready malt flavors; with a great malt/bitterness balance, and zero astringent flavors after the finish. Light-moderate dryness from bitterness, increasing through the glass. Medium carbonation and medium-plus body; with a very smooth, moderately bready/grainy/sticky, and lightly resinous balanced mouthfeel that is great. Zero warming alcohol for 7.5%. Overall this is an excellent fruited IPA! All around great complexity, robustness, and balance of bright citrus/tropical hops, citrus juice/peels, and moderate dark/bready malt flavors; very smooth and easy to drink for the ABV. Felt a bit more malty than I expected; but was very juicy and vibrant on the hop/fruit flavors. A very enjoyable offering.

Poured out a clear, golden-orange color with a small white head of foam. It smelled of orange, lemon and sweet caramel. Nice juicy flavor with a good dose of orange. Sweet caramel maltiness and a slight bitterness.

Appearance: Pours a clear copper color with an impressive head; average retention and lacing

Smell: Resinous and lemony, with strong blood orange tones

Taste: Caramel malts lay down some sweetness, but the bitter adjunct flavors of lemon peel and blood orange quickly take things in a very bitter, almost medicinal direction; piney resins appear, after the swallow, to moderate the bitterness but there is only so much that can be assuaged

Mouthfeel: Medium body with moderate bitterness

Overall: Interesting use of adjuncts here but this is another miss for me from Dogfish

Dogfish Head Craft Brewery "Flesh & Blood IPA"
12 fl. oz. can, "CANNED ON 01/12/17" and sampled on 02/21/17
$2.99 @ Total Wine & More, Cherry Hill, NJ

Notes via stream of consciousness: Nice can. Eye catching red color. Pours a mostly-clear deep amber/copper with a bit of a red-orange cast - or am I imagining that because of the color of the can? Frothy, then rocky tan head drops to a solid cap. Limited aroma that displays just as much caramelish malt as it does hop. That's OK I guess. The flavor is much more citrusy, which I guess is actually from "orange peel, lemon flesh, and blood orange juice". I love the touch of lemon and the sharp snap the orange juice gives it. The malt balances nicely, or perhaps I think, the juice cuts into the malt nicely. It doesn't seem that bitter at all. I'd guess about 40 IBUs. If it wasn't strong I'd think of it more as a pale ale. 7.5% ABV? I don't get the alcohol, but you really shouldn't at just 7.5% either. Medium bodied and moderately carbonated, leaving it delicately crisp and then smooth. Very nice. I'm loving it. I'm continually drawn back to it. And I haven't had an IPA with this much caramel malt to it in a long time. An interesting beer. I'm not sure I want to pay the price to get that fruit character, but on the other hand it's far fuller than if just hops had been used to achieve it. I'd gladly down a pint at the pub though where the price should be more in line with everything else. Really unique - I don't think I've ever had a beer quite like it.
