Style: American IPA

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 7.50%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
An honest to goodness IPA brewed with a bounty of real citrus including lemon flesh, blood orange juice plus orange and lemon peel. A combination of Warrior, Centennial, and a rare experimental hop to perfectly complement the citrus ingredients and flavor. Flesh & Blood balances the resinous hoppy characteristics of an American IPA with the explosive, zesty fruitiness and subtle dry tartness of citrus to deliver a highly quaffable ale that’s incredibly unique and lovely to down the whole year round.

Can poured into an imperial nonic point glass (you use what glad your host has).

Let me start by stating I'm not a huge fan of IPAs that are hop bombed as a good portion of US IPAs tend to be. It was getting harder to find a balanced IPA but thank God the pendulum has been swinging back from that.

That said, I've appreciated that Dogfish Head has always kept balanced IPAs in their repertoire (along with a great number of fantastic beers). I've been wanting to try Flesh & Blood for a while but it seems that there has always been something I'm more interested in trying whenever the opportunity presented itself. This time I just went for it and I'm very glad I did.

It poured a hazy copper color very nicely into the glass with no sustained head but a slight foam around the edge left some lacing residue with every sip. The nose blended the piny scent of the hops with the citrus beautifully. Most important, the beer is incredibly balanced. Each sip had a nice, but not overwhelming, hoppy bite smoothed by the citrus blend. It's awesomely flavored!

I regret delaying trying this. It's a mistake I won't make again. A very refreshing IPA, which the style should be. Another home run from the crew at Dogfish Head!

The perfect summer IPA. The blood organge and lemon are accented by the hops nicely and none of the flavors overpower each other but compliment each other nicely. This may be my favorite Dogfish head brew.

I’ve always enjoyed the balance achieved by DFH on their IPAs. This is no difference. The citrus addition balances nicely with the hop finish and strong malt backbone.

Solid 4 ... Hit the spot on an afternoon where I didn't want to drink too much liquid.

Pours a dark copper with a fine foamy tan head.

The nose gives away a strong malt base with plenty of citrus balance.

The flavor isn't true IPA but It has a nice balance of malty sweetness, citrus, and pine hops.

The mouthfeel is solid like an IPA should be

Overall, a decent brew.

Oh, Dogfish Head, you keep doing these wonderful things. Flesh & Blood is a seriously creepy name for a beer, and when you consider it could also be skin (orange peel), flesh (lemon flesh), and blood (blood orange juice), you have to honor them for their restraint. It's a hoppy IPA that's been struck in the head with a slice of lemon and plenty of orange flavors. The overall effect is quite tart, which I like very much. The hops are very forward to stand up to the citrus, and it is a very pleasing brew.

Hoppier than the 45 ibu suggests. Citrus flavors are in the background and not overpowering. Nice, drinkable beer. Cudos to DFH for the experimentation

The clear bright reddish copper colored beer pours out into a Duvel glass with a 1” light tan head that recedes to a thin cover on the beer and leaves some lacing on the sides of the glass. Sipping creates some scattered small patches of lacing. By mid-way through the beer there’s a thin, irregular island of foam on the surface.

The aromas include some blood orange and lemon along with a bit of orange zest. This mix is riding on the noticeable caramel malt backbone.

As expected from the nose there’s lots of citrus that is a nice mix of blood orange, some lemon and some orange zest. There also seems to be a just a bit of resin in here. The sweetness of the rich, strong caramel malt backbone is balanced by some light hop bitterness. Both provide support and counterpoints for the citric and resinous flavors.

The mouth feel is medium bodied and slightly prickly with the moderate carbonation. The finish begins as all the flavors start to fade into the background that eventually becomes slightly bitter in the back of the palate with the touch of dryness that invites another sip.

Overall, this beer has a fairly complex aroma/flavor profile with the different citric elements riding on top of a traditional IPA caramel malt sweetness and some moderate bitterness. I’ll be enjoying the rest of the 6 pack. I also think this is a flavorful enough beer to have some on hand for guests who are IPA fans during a quiet evening of dinner and conversation.

COD 5/18/17. Pours a hazy blood orange. Quite outstanding head volume, poor lacing and normal retention.

Rich, slightly sweet, quite outstanding nose of mellow citrus. Orange with notes of lemon over a mild grainy background with a touch of cracker. Blood orange is the main component.

World class mouthfeel that is slick and oily. The body is medium but feels heavier due to the slick oily texture. The carbonation / body balance is also world class with just enough effervescence to make the flavors pop and deliver a nice prickly tickle of the tongue.

The flavor profile is outstanding. Had alcohol not become uncovered, it would be quite outstanding. As the middle sweetness fades, alcohol emerges but not terribly so. Otherwise, the flavor profile is like the nose. Bitterness is mild and is rind in nature. Alcohol lingers in the finish and is subtly astringent. The middle is where this beer shines as the sweet base provides a platform for blood orange and orange to emerge.

On draft - pretty much a solid 4 down the scorecard, not bad at all. Fresh hops with tropical fruit, blood orange, lemon, grapefruit and herbal notes, nicely balanced with a dry cracker backbone, fresh bitter orange/grapefruit finish, medium bodied.
