Style: American IPA

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 7.50%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
An honest to goodness IPA brewed with a bounty of real citrus including lemon flesh, blood orange juice plus orange and lemon peel. A combination of Warrior, Centennial, and a rare experimental hop to perfectly complement the citrus ingredients and flavor. Flesh & Blood balances the resinous hoppy characteristics of an American IPA with the explosive, zesty fruitiness and subtle dry tartness of citrus to deliver a highly quaffable ale that’s incredibly unique and lovely to down the whole year round.

Pours a hazy orange with an off white head.

Big citrus notes in the nose with tropical fruit and floral aromas as well.

Taste is big citrus orange, grapefruit, followed by sweet blood orange trailing into a bitter lemon draw. Finishes dry. The flavors in this were excellent, but the lemon threw it off for me; it didn't meld well with the other flavors.

Appearance: Deep, clean amber-copper, with a nice head of white froth. Thin fence-row lacing.

Aroma: Rich citrus and malts. Nice, balanced and refined.

Taste: Exquisitely juicy and fresh, like a mouthful of fresh orange wedges. I get a hint of bitter, but mostly omnipresent blood orange and juicy citrus fruit. Absolutely delicious and one I’d gladly pick up again, despite the rather high price tag (a single 12 oz. bottle was $3.99 at a local bottle shop).

A bit darker than traditional IPA's more ruby and clear with an impressive 1/2 inch of froth that slowly dissipates. Smell is balanced which is nice wasn't expecting a dry hop explosion or a grapefruit twang of blood orange. Actually quite good it has a nice tart aspect that really balances well with the IPA body which Dogfish is known for. Dare I say this is by far the best blood orange IPA I ever had which actually delivers not only fruit flavor but balanced sweet and tart one want in said beer. That being said the body is kind of malty and heavy making this not too keen for summer brew but a world class experimental.

Those going into this expecting to be biting into a hop cone should be ashamed of themselves its a freaking fruit beer for goodness sake!

as always wit dogfish head for me...curiosity gets the cat. if I was gonna try the ipa I had to jump on it sooner than later so I bit.

bottled 6/24/16

not really my jazz. fairly dominated by all the citrus and peels and hey now listed on the label which makes it come across as malty. maybe I am spoiled w all the NE hop bombs but this is a decent brew, but not a good ipa. call it a vedgie beer, call it a shandy...but don't call it an ipa. cheers to dfh for continuing to explore, but this one is skippable.

Poured from bottle into shaker pint, nice 2 finger tan soapy head. Clear reddish amber to look at. Smells of citrus. Taste faintly of sweet caramel, followed up by a bitter citrus with a mild citrus tart finish. Have been waiting in this one. The blood orange is pretty predominant, though not sure I am digging it in an ipa. Will gladly drink the remaining 5

Poured from the bottle into a Dogfish branded Spiegelau IPA glass.

Deep copper red and amber orange body color, with excellent clarity if quite dark to see through. Multiple clumps of fine carbonation cascading from the bottom, meeting up to a rich easily growing three finger tan light head, slightly tinged orange color in itself. Settles with a finger and a half very nicely, great looking IPA and nice body color.

Hop and sharp orange citrus flavors burst on the nose. Thick juiced orange, and a pine to cedary and lime like aroma of hop that comes off real nicely. Lots of citrus zesty and spritzy oils sensing from squeezed lemon peel and rind. Real nice fruited IPA doing wonders for the aroma.

Palate manages to take it to simpler tasks. Lightly juiced front, filled with oily flavors of citrus rinds. Light bodied caramel and a good hop sting on the finish hinting between pine and more citrus angles that get slightly astringent. Lots of leftover bitter oils of fruit, leaving some of the hops to play second fiddle on the aftertaste. Full fruited with quite an oily punch.

Dogfish 60 juiced up? Hard to say, but certainly fits the bill nicely.

12oz bottle served in a tulip glass. Bottled on 06/14/16. 1002 stamp as well.

Appearance: Bright (clear) coppery amber with more of a distinct red color to it when held up to the light. Thin white head with a few strands of persistent lacing noted. Nice looking color. I'd give it higher marks if there was more foam and lacing.

Smell: Definite aroma of blood orange, fresh cut lemon, and a bit of citrus rind as well.

Taste: Up front strong citrus flavor - lemon and blood orange definitely notable. Transition into some underlying cracker-like malt. The finish is hoppy and lightly bitter - citrus flavors again. I can't tell what the experimental hop is in this at all - this is citrus from start to finish.

Mouthfeel: Nicely thick, but strongly carbonated - more fizzy and spicy. Some stickiness on the teeth.

Overall / Drinkability: Other than the mouthfeel which was just passable, this is a very citrus emphasized IPA and it works. The mouthfeel slows down its drinkability so that I end up sipping it slowly. I had this by itself and I find that while it's enjoyable in that way, I think I would like it better paired with food. Seafood maybe with this much citrus? Hard to say. I may have to pick it up again and see what it pairs with.
