Style: American IPA

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 7.50%

Notes / Commercial Description:
An honest to goodness IPA brewed with a bounty of real citrus including lemon flesh, blood orange juice plus orange and lemon peel. A combination of Warrior, Centennial, and a rare experimental hop to perfectly complement the citrus ingredients and flavor. Flesh & Blood balances the resinous hoppy characteristics of an American IPA with the explosive, zesty fruitiness and subtle dry tartness of citrus to deliver a highly quaffable ale that’s incredibly unique and lovely to down the whole year round.

When a brewery asks almost $25 dollars for a six pack you have to pause for a moment, if you don't you're a gullible fool. I must say this is one of those moments where it is worth it, this beer is a superb and unique offering from the usually reliable Dogfish Head. Without the citrus the malt would've dominated, another boring malt-forward double IPA dreaded for the graveyard, the citrus brings this one back from the dead however. I can almost imagine this beer before the orange, full of grainy sugar and barely tolerable, and then the citrus arrives like a dark savior in the night. "Embrace my bloody fruit" the blood orange commands, the beer then complies and emerges amidst the moonlit backdrop covered in pulp and guilt. "Oh Yeah!" It emerges with Kool-Aid-Man like glee, bursting through the wall to entice your tastebuds. (this commercial brought to you by the inspiration of David Lynch).

12 oz bottle, dated 6/23/16, poured into a snifter

A- A clear light orange/red with a three finger white head.

S- Piney/earthy hops, caramel malts, citrus, orange peel, hints of lemons.

T- Again getting a lot of pine/earthy hops, some caramel malts, getting more of the lemons and blood oranges without being tart, hints of orange peel.

M- Smooth, medium body.

O- Was hoping for more fruits, but it's still a good IPA.

Bottled on 6/24/16. 12oz bottle poured into a tulip. Pours a light copper with great clarity and transparency; fluffy off-white head that slowly falls leaving great retention and okay lacing. The aromas have a nice amount of funky citrus. Malts do their thing. The flavors are bittersweet, but probably on the sweeter side. The flavors follow the nose perfectly. Musty flavors. Lots of citrus with a solid malt backbone. Not too bitter. Alcohol goes unnoticed. Mouthfeel is medium-bodied with moderate carbonation. It's fluffy, creamy and smooth. Easy to drink.

This is a solid IPA. It's very unique for a "fruit IPA". Even though this might not be my new personal favorite DFH IPA, it gets extra credit for being different. Not bad at all.

Kind of uninspiring, given DFH's other offerings. Look is good, auburn and bubbly, frothy white head. But I expected real robust citrus in the smell and taste, and it's just not there. The smell is almost muted and is actually heavier bready malt than citrus rind. The taste is pleasant and balanced, but not IIPA ground. There's some citrus sweetness on the very front of the sip, and some pithy dryness on the back, but things are pretty nondescript in the middle. Surprisingly subdued.

Appearance: pours an amber color with a 1" head that lasts.

S mell: oranges and some soft malt aroma rise from from the glass.

Taste: mild malt profile with orange, pears, lemon zest, and a mild bitterness make up a mild IPA.

Mouthfeel: medium bodied beer. Crisp from start to finish,

Overall: a decent IPA that lacs some punch. More citric but bitterness is mild. Easy to drink.
