Music has been a part of Dogfish Head since before Dogfish Head. So it’s a natural fit for a brewery that makes ‘Analog Beer for the Digital Age’ to be the Official Beer of Record Store Day, a celebration of the unique culture of record stores and the special role they play in their communities.
Of course, as the Official Beer of Record Store Day, we had to create a special brew for the occasion! Insert Beer To Drink Music To. This Belgian-style Tripel is brewed with sweet orange peel, green cardamom, peppercorns and vanilla. It’s the perfect marriage of beer and music and best when paired with some of your favorite tunes.
Clocking in at 9% ABV, Beer To Drink Music To is a golden orange brew with forward notes of toffee, cardamom, cloves and subtle notes of vanilla.

Deep amber brown and hazy with a finger of off white head.
Smells of phenols, pear skin, toasted malts, vanilla, and brown sugar.
Tastes of phenols, pear skins, a light sweetness, and a hint of coriander.
Thick, slightly syrupy body, with low carbonation.
Got this in Kunming China at a beer bar along Wenlin Jie, drinking in Chiang Mai in my home, June 12th, 2018. Either this beer didn't age well which it could have, or its not the best DFH I've had. Either way, I was stoked to find it in China and be drinking it in Asia, even at inflated prices.

Amber color. Big, off-white head. The aroma of caramel, yeasts, flowers, and spices. Rather sweet with bitterness at the end. Definitely not bad, though far from my idea of tripel.

Official Beer of Record Store Day. Cool. I will celebrate by listening to Wayne Shorter on a DVD.
Clear, light golden coloring, slim white head.
Aroma pops with stone fruit & some citrus, peppers, other spices, bubblegum, Belgian yeast. Bright, fruity, funky.
In the mouth: flash of fruit, splash of spice, alcohol buzz, and candy floss. Malt and spice are big in this one. Medium-bodied, easy-ish drinking', save for the oncoming alcohol. "A Belgian-style ale brewed with sweet orange peel, green cardamom, peppercorns, and vanilla." Vanilla? I didn't catch that at all. Let's try again. ....Oh sure, I can see that. Mmmm, yeah, how could I miss it?
Nice, interesting take on the Belgian style triple. I like this one just fine.

12oz bottle poured into a snifter. Yeast poured too.
A: Golden/amber color. Good clarity despite some yeast particles in suspension (yeast was roused and poured). Fine-bubbles white head settles after a bit. Delicate webs of lacing.
S: Vanilla hits first. Confectioners sugar and shortcake. Pepper picks up after a tick. Tough to tell where that ends and phenols begin. Cardamom. Orange marmalade and fruit cup.
T: Peppercorns strike first, quickly followed by orange peel. As that settles, a big wave of vanilla rides up. Shortbread malt. Dusty yeast and cardamom. Tropical esters and phenols are there, but the additives talk over them. Mild alcohol. Hop bitterness and some earthy/herbal flavors. Finish is cardamom.
M: Medium bodied. Airy and creamy with aggressive carbonation and a lot of scrubbing action. Warming.
O: The nose was nice, but in taste this ends up being a rather disjointed. The additives vie for attention and the base beer gets a little lost. By no means is this a bad beer, but I do think it could have benefited from more subtlety in some areas.

A: Poured into a tulip to a slightly hazy light gold topped by a finger of dense white head which fades quickly to a collar around the edge of the glass with minimal lacing
S: Smells of orchard fruits and peppery spice with a little doughy malt
T: Taste is sweet on the front end with those orchard fruit notes but a lot of yeasty spice along with some pepper notes. Slight doughy malt as well with a hint of sweetness. Slight floral notes at times as well. Swallow is more orchard fruits before the doughy malt and peppery spice come back for another round.
M: The beer has a moderate amount of heft on the palate with carbonation that is somewhat prickly. The beer has a very drying finish as well.
O: Overall this is a really nice beer with some interesting flavors and some decent complexity. Fairly standard execution for the style and well done. Nothing outstanding but not a bad beer either. One to try but not necessarily worth seeking out.
