Style: American Imperial IPA

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 9.00%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
Esquire Magazine calls our 90 Minute IPA "perhaps the best IPA in America." An imperial IPA best savored from a snifter, 90 Minute has a great malt backbone that stands up to the extreme hopping rate.

90 Minute IPA was the first beer we continuously hopped, allowing for a pungent -- but not crushing -- hop flavor.

Bottle: a thick dark brown embossed 355mL bottle with a decent label.

Appearance: poured into a tulip glass - a light haze with an amber-orange hue. Plenty of very fine carbonation across the profile. A decent off-white head hangs about for ages, and drops to a half-finger with fantastic lacing.

Aroma: plenty of hops, but not as sharp as usual with an American IPA. They come across a lot more fresh and floral, which is a nice change. Predominantly floral with some pine and citrus. Some light biscuit malt backing.

Taste: very much smoother than I was expecting from an AIPA. Lots of those hops again, but a smooth, fresh and floral version. Not necessarily better than the normal AIPA, just a different version of it. Rather nice, actually.

Aftertaste: some bitterness comes through from the hops, but really it is still more smooth with that biscuit malt still evident.

Mouth feel: moderate in feel with a lovely silky smoothness. Somewhat dry on the finish. Carbonation is perfect.

Overall: this is a fantastic take on the American IPA. The dry-hopping and continual hopping really allows the full, fresh flavour of the hops to come through. The price is a bit prohobitive at around AU$170+ for a case of 24 x 330mL, but that's to be expected when so many hops are used in a beer.

12oz bottle in a stemmed tulip.

A- Poured a brawny looking golden reddish-brown color. A big white head left rings of lacing. Slightly hazy.

S- Malts and hops are trumped by sugar and alcohol. I'm trying to be kind so I'll omit the word 'unpleasant'. Or maybe I won't.

T- Heavy malt load and resinous hop flavors are trumped by, you guessed it, sugar and alcohol. Less so than in the aroma thus allowing flavors to develop.

M- Thick, chewy and resinous. The malts build body, hops do their dance.

O- I missed the appeal of this brew due to the force of its sugar and booziness.

DFH's 90 minute pours a beautiful golden caramel color and forms a descent head. The nose and taste on this beer are awesome and super rich with notes of malt, hops, nuts, and bacon grease. The medium-full body on 90 minute is well balanced by its good carbonation.
