Very Good
Lupu-Luau IPALupu-Luau IPA
Notes: The first Hawaiian Luau in 1819 bucked tradition while maintaining respect for a rich legacy, so when we set out to create this namesake IPA, we found our own way to rebel against restrictive limits of known brewing ingredients while honoring Dogfish's brewing tradition.

What began as an exploration of all things hazy and pale, Lupu-Luau morphed into a coconut-centric IPA. We combined Pils malt with flaked barley, rolled oats, and malted and raw wheat to bring the haze. Then we brought coconut to the party in 3 different ways with toasted coconut, dehydrated coconut water and an experimental hop variety that provides a unique coconut & woody aromas.

Look: It pours golden and clear with a full slightly off white head. Head retention is excellent.

Smell: The initial aromas are of coconut and tropical fruit with pineapple. There is a very low level of oat and grainy sweetness.

Taste: It has several flavors going on at one time which include coconut, tropical fruit, citrus and a light floral note. There is a very low level of grainy sweetness.

Feel: It has a medium body with a slight bite to the bitterness.

Overall, the flavors blend together fairly well to create an interesting ipa.

Had a small pour on a flight in September 2017 at a local pizza parlor. It was not a bad IPA, especially if you like the flavor of coconut. Oddly, I like coconut flavor (in Asian foods, for example), but not the grainy texture when it's used in baked goods.

Looks hazy gold color with a 1-2 finger off white head that faded slowly and left good spotty lacing. Smells of coconut, pineapple, orange, lime, lemonade and biscuit. It smells and tastes like a pina colada, but not in a fake way.

This is more unusual and better than BAers say. A little too much coconut, but less than Oskars.

a) Pours creamy, hazy golden body crowned with lasting and massively lacing head.
s) Passionfruit, pineapple and citrus fruit aromas are too slight over coconut.
t) This fruit salad erupts with powerful flavors with that additional, odd and strong vanilla-coconut back drop. Laid out on a bready, fresh crossant, buttery base.
f) The feel is creamy, buttery and yet puckery. Complex warring but balanced textures are great.
o) The fruit and vanilla clean up nicely with a bitter, fresh hoppy ending. Truly original and would offer my friends.

Golden hazy with lots of small bubbles, and a head of 2 white fingers.

Smells of childrens' aspirin, a hint of pineapple, perhaps some coconut, perhaps not. Some light fruity and floral notes.

Tastes of coconut, barrel wood, slightly fruity and floral.

Light, slightly syrupy body with little carbonation.

Drinking in Redding, Jan 19th, 2019. Different, and I'm enjoying the taste.

12oz can into a tall glass. Canned 9/26/18, so closing in on 3 months old.

Hazy, dull golden yellow body. Big bubbly white head leaving nice lacing.

Given the description of this beer on the can, you would expect a strong aroma, but all I'm getting is a very mild fruitiness.

Taste is good, but flavors very muted. There is no coconut flavor at all. It is somewhat fruity and also quite dry. There is a mild hop bite. If I work really hard, I'd say there is a "feel" of the coconut, but perhaps I'm overthinking it.

Mouth is medium and initially a bit tingly. Finish is dry and lightly bitter. It's also a bit warm for the 7.3abv.

Overall, the beer tastes good, but given that the can blares coconut and I couldn't detect any at all, this is a bit disappointing.

pours a murky, golden amber with a medium head that hangs around. nose; clementine, peach/apricot, wheat, & mild coconut oil. i also keep getting some slight oak character in both the nose and taste. taste; heavy pilsner malt, biscuit (oat?), light oak, orange pith, pineapple, passionfruit, light mango, lemongrass, light coconut, light guava, & floral citrus hops. medium carbonation & slightly oily mouthfeel. i was expecting tanning lotion after reading the label, but this comes off really well and balanced! the malt here is pretty big, but there's a lot of tropical sweets and citrus hops to balance it out. boo on gose, THIS is a great poolside drink!

Lots of coconut going on here. I agree that this is delicious. Well at least now I can say that I have had an IPA with coconut added to it but I don't think it's as good as the other reviewers on here think it is. Cheers! B

Canned 5/4/18 Light amber pour with a touch of chill haze. World class head volume and lacing. Retention is typical.

Very good nose of pineapple, orange and hints of tangerine. The base is slightly sweet and a mix of bread and cracker. Coconut is almost non-existent in the rather weak aroma intensity.

Light body that is a bit watery but manages to be somewhat slick. Carbonation / body balance is good. Effervescence is subtle but adequate.

Like the nose, the flavor profile is very good. Also like the nose, it lacks intensity and coconut is almost absent. Bitterness is light, less than the typical pale ale, and is a combination of herbal and very light zest. The middle is moderately sweet and allows the citrus to present in a blended fashion. Of this blend, little separation occurs. However, a light touch of mango is observed that wasn't present in the nose. The finish is a slow fade with light astringency.

Appearance: Clean golden-amber, with a nice off-white head and bit of lace.

Aroma: Delicious hops here, with coconut. Subtle but effective.

Taste: Unusual. Hoppy as an IPA should be, but there’s plenty of coconut water shining through, too. Actually this is pretty well delicious (if you like coconut or coconut water as I do). Subtle, inventive, and damned worth further tastings. I just wish Dogfish could compete more in price, as I’d support them a shit-ton more…

Poured into a tall clear pint glass. Has a hazy bright lime-golden color, has a very large head with good retention and lacing. Some floaters.

Smells mainly of coconut and pineapple, along with notes of other citrus. I don't notice anything too hoppy.

Tastes somewhat piney with the chief subtle supplement of coconut, along with other notes of citrus, vanilla, and cracker. No bitter aftertaste. Feels creamy smooth.

Really easy beer to drink.

Mini review:

Dated 08/21/18, consumed on 10/03/18.

Clear gold with minimal white head.

Smells hoppy, a little dank, and there is some some coconut water as well.

Tastes a lot like a mix of 60 and 90 Minute used to make a light rum cocktail. It isn’t really bad, it just doesn’t really come together as well as I would like. While I generally dislike beers with lactose, Evil Twin’s IPA Kolata was a bit better and more interesting.

Poured from can into tulip good 2 finger soapy white head, so so retention good lacing. Bright light golden in the glass, slight chill haze. Smells of coconut and pineapple. Taste is cracker malt, slight sweetness, and a burst of coconut. There is some pineapple and vanilla coming thru in the middle. Finish has a mild bitterness and slight dryness. Good mouthfeel, good complexity. Each sip brings some new stuff to the party.
I first had this beer a few weeks ago in Nashville at a Tiki bar, only appropriate that they would serve it there. I remember the coconut being more forward, but then again my palate was shit from a day of drinking. This beer was very welcome. Drinks really well for 7.2 ABV

A clean IPA without any deviations from the style. That said, it is well made, easy to drink, and delicious.

Light gold beer with just a hint of haze under a few fingers of bright white head... Aromas of coconut and mild citrus on the nose supported by more of the same on the sip... Has a mildly sweet, vaguely earthy undercurrent and brighter tropical citrus highpoints... Bitterness is also very mild... Smooth and very drinkable... The coconut elements make me think of suntan lotion at the beach... Good but nothing crazy...

Tasted refreshing and perfect when sitting on a boat in the sun. When back indoors a few weeks later, a bit too much like hopped up coconut water. Maybe not the best to sit and enjoy, but works OK when outdoors and needing to cool off?

12 FL. OZ. can
Served in a tulip glass

This beer pours a brilliant golden color and is topped with three inches of off white head that leaves little lacing.

The aroma is citrus with hints of coconut.

The taste is citrus up front. The coconut is subtly noticeable in the middle with a slightly bitter finish,

Medium body, well carbonated

It is a tasty, easy drinking IPA. If you are looking for a big coconut presense you will be disappointed.

Pale straw color with a little haze. Nice white head and good lacing. Smells of coconut suntan oil, And minimal grassy notes. Very spicy as it hits the tongue, on the thin side but still slightly creamy. Moderate carbonation. There is the sweetness and flavor of coconut milk up front and mild to moderately hopped. Nice clean finish. Very light and drinkable. Maybe a little too much in the sweet side. Not a bad summertime option.

12oz canned 6-2-18
Not quite crystal clear but not hazy. Bright golden IPA with a 1/3" white head. Retains for a minute and then falls to a cap. Good lacing left behind as the beer disappears.
Coconut and pineapple, maybe a hint of lime. There's a green aroma, hard to name it (floral/woody?)..assuming it's coming from the hops. Bright aroma...smells good.
Flavor is that of English hops in my opinion...more floral and earthy in nature. Coconut is apparent and more so in the finish. Not a coconut water guy but if it tasted like this I could get into it.
Clean and bright entry. Light to medium body and the same as far as carbonation goes.
Very drinkable, nice IPA variant like I haven't tasted to this point. I'm glad I picked this's a refreshing warm weather IPA.

A: The beer is a little hazy yellow in color and has a light amount of visible carbonation. It it poured with a quarter finger high white head that died down, leaving a thin layer covering the surface, a narrow collar around the edge, and some lacing down the sides of the glass.
S: Light aromas of coconut water are present in the nose along with hints of floral hops.
T: The taste has flavors of toasted coconuts along with notes of floral hops and hints of pine resin. There is a light to moderate amount of bitterness.
M: It feels medium-bodied and a little crisp on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This is an interesting IPA, but the aromas and flavors of coconut are somewhat obscured and could have been more prominently showcased.

It is exciting, to me at least, that DFHCB has deigned to put many of their beers into CANs in support of The CANQuest (tm). It has given me the opportunity to revisit Namaste White & this will be my first foray into this beer.

From the CAN: "Our coconut-centric lupulin party, this IPA is brewed with a tropical trifecta of toasted coconut, experimental hops & coconut water."; "Off-centered ales for off-centered people."

For this one, I Crack!ed open the vent & went with an inverted Glug since I really wanted to get the esters in this one going. It quickly foamed up to form two-plus fingers of dense, foamy, rocky, eggshell-white head with good retention, leaving nice lacing in its wake. Color was a magnificent Yellow-Gold (SRM = 4 - 5) with NE-quality clarity, enticing a visit from The Gelt Gang of Midas, Croesus & Mammon, all clamoring for a taste. Nose was redolent with coconut & that may have been a good thing in a Fruit/Vegetable Beer, but in an AIPA, it was less than optimal if one is rating to style & not to taste. It smelled great, to me, like summers at the beach, but that would be my personal taste. Mouthfeel was medium-to-full, not quite creamy, but on the approach. The taste was almost fully coconut with some underlying bitterness, identifiable as hops, but beyond that, I CANnot tell you which varieties. Its coconut taste is going to be off-putting for some. I realize that not everyone digs coconut, but I certainly do. To me, this tasted great, but it definitely was not to style. Finish was in that nebulous realm between semi-sweet (coconut) & semi-dry (hoppy bitterness). I have had it previously with Asian food & it works really well. For someone looking for a standard AIPA, they should look elsewhere or risk disappointment.

Pours out a hazy amber color. The head is white with excellent retention. Lacing is extremely minimal.
The nose is tropical. Tangerines and lemon zest are apparent. There is a sort of earthiness to it. Coconut notes are faint but they are there. All in all a very aromatic beer.
Definitely more coconut in the taste than nose. Bitter upfront, still getting tangerine although with lots of coconut. When they say water they mean it. It has that light water type coconut flavor more so than the actual fruit. The toasted coconut comes through on the nose more so than the taste. Its good.
Mouthfeel is medium bodied. Its soft with soft carbonation.
