Lupu-Luau IPALupu-Luau IPA

Brewed by:
Dogfish Head Craft Brewery
Delaware, United States

Style: American IPA

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 7.30%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
The first Hawaiian Luau in 1819 bucked tradition while maintaining respect for a rich legacy, so when we set out to create this namesake IPA, we found our own way to rebel against restrictive limits of known brewing ingredients while honoring Dogfish's brewing tradition.

What began as an exploration of all things hazy and pale, Lupu-Luau morphed into a coconut-centric IPA. We combined Pils malt with flaked barley, rolled oats, and malted and raw wheat to bring the haze. Then we brought coconut to the party in 3 different ways with toasted coconut, dehydrated coconut water and an experimental hop variety that provides a unique coconut & woody aromas.

12oz bottle poured into a tulip. Pours a hazy glowing golden; fluffy eggshell white head that falls leaving nice retention and sticky lacing. The aromas have mild tropical notes along with some citrus. The coconut is pretty subtle and is hard to pick up. Some fresh grass along with some crackers. Malts are there. The flavors basically follow the nose. Once again, the coconut is hard to pick up. Lots of fresh grass along with some pine. It's slightly earthy. Some grapefruit. Solid hop bitterness. The malts do their thing, but the hop bitterness seems to shine. It's not too sweet at all. Finishes dry for the most part. Alcohol goes unnoticed. Mouthfeel is very nice. It's medium-bodied with active carbonation. It's very fluffy, crisp, smooth and easy to drink.

This is a solid IPA, but the coconut seems to go unnoticed. Nothing seems artificial though. It's very clean, crisp and refreshing.

Pours hazy gold with a dense creamy frothy white foam head. Smells like coconut, vanilla, grapefruit, pineapple, passionfruit, orange citrus, caramelized crackery malts, with floral woody earthy herbal grassy pine. Tastes like coconut, vanilla, grapefruit, pineapple, passionfruit, orange citrus, caramelized crackery malt, with bitter floral woody earthy herbal grassy pine. Feels medium bodied, creamy with smooth moderate carbonation. Overall a nice and interesting coconut IPA.

Pours a cloudy honey color with a 3F head in a Spiegelau glass.

Very floral, pineapple, hint of coconut, tropical fruit.

Light carbonated MF, mild bitterness.

Excellent taste. Coconut is stronger in the taste, floral, tropical fruit, pineapple. DFH doesn't say which hops it uses, but the tropical flavors are pronounced.

Overall: excellent, refreshing, mildly hoppy. A perfect beer for a summer night. Underrated.

maybe the beer geeks are over dogfish head, but they are still making some incredibly innovative and delicious beers, and this is right in line with their long history of doing that. a coconut forward ipa that is at the same time very much hop driven, but also exploding with coconut. it sounds like a gimmick, or like at the very least this would have to be pretty sweet, but thats just not the case. they use a nice cerealy pale grain base to build up the body, some oats and wheat i would think, and then they introduce coconut in a few different ways. it ends up tasting far less forced than some of the big coconut stouts do when its all said and done, and way less sweet. it also tastes really natural and authentic, like coconut flesh itself, not some coconut flavored drink or dessert or lotion or something, its honest and robust, i love it. there is a nice floral tropical element to the hops that ramps up too, and it goes great with the coconut, juicy and lightly citrusy, it certainly screams summer to me. i almost swear its sorachi ace hops, that lemon creaminess comes on for a flash, but its tough to say for sure which hops are in here. i could almost swear there are sorachi ace hops though, so distinct, but its not quite all the way there, that finishing hop complexion though seems like it for certain! probably the best integration of coconut into a lighter colored beer i have ever seen, and i commend it for that. i wish it was a little more sessionable for hot weather though. the alcohol is a little high to slam them, and all the grains give it a pretty substantial body. dry and bubbly and frothy though, it hits the feel mark pretty squarely. i like how much this is still an ipa, but the hops taste unique to me, especially with the coconut, and the vibe of this is super hawaiian and fun. good work on this one guys! ill be looking forward to my next one...

Had on tap. Pours lightly hazy, gold in color with 1/3 inch head. Taste is big coconut, vanilla, grains of paradise and light lemon hops. Makes for a nice mix of sweet and bitter with medium body and high carbonation. Super interesting and one of the most coconut forward beers I have had that was not a stout. Could put down a few of these on a warm day.

Dogfish Head Craft Brewery "Lupu-Luau IPA"
12 fl. oz. brown glass bottle, "BOTTLED ON 06/24/17 1501" and sampled on 10/07/17
$2.99 @ Total Wine & More, Cherry Hill, NJ

Notes via stream of consciousness: So, a coconut IPA? It sounds interesting at least, so let's try it. It pours a very hazy golden-orange body beneath a thick and fluffy head that settles to a creamy 1/8" cap leaving short walls of lace rising along the rim. The appearance is good except for the clarity, but I see that they were going for a cloudy IPA, which I don't really understand myself, but OK, I see that that's the thing right now so I'll let it go and just say 'whatever'. The aroma displays a touch of coconut, but mainly grainy malt. It's clean, however, so no fault there. Can it be an IPA with out a hoppy nose though? Hmmm. If you swirl it and wait a bit there's some tropical character to it, orange and pineapple perhaps. The head's held up so far, maintaining a solid creamy cap, so it's got that going for it. On to the flavor... The malty character remains, as does the light coconut, and there's much more tropical flavor to it. Perhaps my sample is just a little old and it's lost some of the aromatics over time. The tropical notes include orange, some kind of melon, papaya, apricot, and pineapple. I'm actually surprised that there's so much malt character there, I'd have thought they'd have gone light to get more of that coconut out of it. It's solidly bitter, and there's some alcohol showing, and I guess that's it's link to being an "IPA". In the finish it's quickly fruity, then coconut-y, and then malty - which lingers for a moment, gently sweetish before the bitterness rises as the sugars erode. That's not to say it finishes sweet, it doesn't, but it's not exactly dry either. Ehhh, I don't know. I'm up in the air on this one. I applaud their creativity, and it's certainly a good attempt, but I'm not convinced. I think this would make a better pale ale with less bitterness and alcohol. You could even leave the medium, dextrinous body the same if you wanted, but I also think it might be better with a simpler grain bill. But forget all of that, I'm not the brewer so my thoughts on what it could be aren't pertinent, just my thoughts on what's in front of me. It's OK. It has it's time and place just like any other beer, but it's definitely a niche beer to be sure. Probably worth trying just to see.

I guess the best way I can describe this, is take the mouthfeel of a beer, and combine that with the flavor of slightly hopped coconut water. Not bad, just odd

Pours a very hazy yellow gold with a white head. Smells of coconut, oats, hops, and malt. Tastes of coconut water, hops, and some sweetness. Medium in body and carbonation. Overall this is a weird beer, I don't think it's bad, I just don't necessarily like it too much.

From the neck in yellow letters: "BOTTLED ON 07/08/17 0647"

Appearance: The body of the beer is completely opaque with a light orange and gold color. The head is large and creamy textured, white, and it leaves very good lacing. Mild retention.

Aroma: The beer has a bit of a light spicy aroma with a touch of herbal bay leaf. It smells alright but it is very faint.

Taste: Up front there is an interesting sweet flavor that tastes a bit like coconut and burnt sugar cookie. There is a bit of an herbal flavor with bitterness that jars the sweetness. It is an odd mix of flavors.

Mouthfeel: It has a mild bitterness that cuts the sweetness nicely and it has good carbonation. It is a very easy beer to drink. The label lists this beer as "7.3%" but it drinks like a lighter beer.

Overall: It's a pleasant and drinkable beer but it is lacking in aroma and the flavor seems to be a bit off. It might be a bit too sweet for the IPA enthusiast so I would caution those who might fall in that category. I might drink it again or I might not, but it isn't the best coconut beer I've had or even the best coconut IPA.

12 ounce bottle into signature tulip glass, bottled on 7/8/2017. Pours very hazy/cloudy deep golden amber/light orange color with a 1-2 finger fairly dense and fluffy off white head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings around the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Aromas of coconut, lemon, orange, pineapple, peach, pear, apricot, mango, melon, passion fruit, papaya, citrus peel, light pepper/pine, wheat, cracker, lightly toasted biscuit, herbal, wood, and floral/grassy earthiness. Nice and pleasant aromas with good balance and complexity of citrus/fruity/earthy hops, coconut, and bready malt notes; with solid strength. Taste of big coconut, lemon, orange, pineapple, peach, pear, apricot, mango, melon, passion fruit, papaya, citrus peel, light pepper/pine, wheat, cracker, lightly toasted biscuit, herbal, wood, and floral/grassy earthiness. Light-moderate pine, citrus peel, woody, grassy, spicy bitterness on the finish. Lingering notes of coconut, lemon, orange, pineapple, peach, pear, apricot, mango, melon, passion fruit, papaya, citrus peel, pepper, pine, wheat, cracker, lightly toasted biscuit, herbal, wood, and floral/grassy earthiness on the finish for a while. Very nice complexity, robustness, and balance of citrus/fruity/earthy hops, coconut, and bready malt flavors; with a great malt/bitterness balance, and zero astringent hop flavors after the finish. Light-moderate increasing dryness from bitterness. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth, moderately bready/grainy/sticky, and lightly resinous balanced mouthfeel that is nice. Zero warming alcohol for 7.3%. Overall this is a very nice fruited IPA. All around nice complexity, robustness, and balance of citrus/fruity/earthy hops, coconut, and bready malt flavors; very smooth and easy to drink with the modestly bitter/drying finish. Pretty unique and interesting, but it works really well. The coconut flavors blend nicely against the fruity/earthy hop character; with a nice balancing malt backbone. Never aggressive or overly bitter; but has plenty of nice dryness. A very enjoyable offering.

Poured from 12oz bottle into a dimpled mug.

Appearance: medium golden hue with a thick haze and a finger of fizzy ivory foam. I like it.

Smell: sweet and fruity, with plenty of melon, citrus and even berry character. The coconut is there, but something about the fruitiness morphs it into almost a strawberry-like character. Quite interesting.

Taste: fruity and sweet, and the coconut is a little bit more itself here. I'm not accustomed to coconut outside the context of a dark beer, and I think it works relatively well here. The beer is still a little bit too sweet for my taste in IPAs, but overall it's interesting and pretty complex.

Mouthfeel: medium body with a good carbonation and creaminess for the style.

Overall: I would not drink a ton of this beer, but I think it gets points for style. It's definitely the best fruity-coconut-IPA I've ever had, for what it's worth.

12 oz bottle

Hazed, typical looking almond amber, minor medium khaki cap.

Mild coconut forward sniff.

Tasty IPA with a more then minor coconut character, somebody else noted coconut infused sun tan lotion and thats not far off....tasty n tropical inspired...worth a try...more intriguing brew from old school heavy hitter DFH

12 oz bottle (bottled 6/24/17) into wine glass. Consumed 8/5/17

Pretty hazy yellow golden body, not much head and quickly disappears into a thin layer. But this beer smells and tastes great! Yellow golden hazy body, clear citrus and almost tangerine aromas with hints of coconut. Taste has a clear cocout presence that actually works really well with the hoppy bitterness and sweetness/citrusy notes. Finishes medium dry and lingers with a bit of hop and coconut oily feel. Very refreshing

Light gold in color with a light haziness that blocks a majority of the light getting through. There's a fingernail of off white around the rim and covering the vast majority of the top. Moderate lacing. The nose is muted coconut, but I'm not smelling hops. The taste is of coconut with a bit of citrus hops in the back of the palate. The mouth offers a light cooling sensation from the coconut and yet finishes a touch resinous from the citrus hops. Truly unique. Think pina colada with a hint of citrus IPA.

Lots of coconut going on here. I agree that this is delicious. Well at least now I can say that I have had an IPA with coconut added to it but I don't think it's as good as the other reviewers on here think it is. Cheers! B
