The first Hawaiian Luau in 1819 bucked tradition while maintaining respect for a rich legacy, so when we set out to create this namesake IPA, we found our own way to rebel against restrictive limits of known brewing ingredients while honoring Dogfish's brewing tradition.
What began as an exploration of all things hazy and pale, Lupu-Luau morphed into a coconut-centric IPA. We combined Pils malt with flaked barley, rolled oats, and malted and raw wheat to bring the haze. Then we brought coconut to the party in 3 different ways with toasted coconut, dehydrated coconut water and an experimental hop variety that provides a unique coconut & woody aromas.

Pours hazy gold with a dense creamy frothy white foam head. Smells like coconut, vanilla, grapefruit, pineapple, passionfruit, orange citrus, caramelized crackery malts, with floral woody earthy herbal grassy pine. Tastes like coconut, vanilla, grapefruit, pineapple, passionfruit, orange citrus, caramelized crackery malt, with bitter floral woody earthy herbal grassy pine. Feels medium bodied, creamy with smooth moderate carbonation. Overall a nice and interesting coconut IPA.

Look: It pours golden and clear with a full slightly off white head. Head retention is excellent.
Smell: The initial aromas are of coconut and tropical fruit with pineapple. There is a very low level of oat and grainy sweetness.
Taste: It has several flavors going on at one time which include coconut, tropical fruit, citrus and a light floral note. There is a very low level of grainy sweetness.
Feel: It has a medium body with a slight bite to the bitterness.
Overall, the flavors blend together fairly well to create an interesting ipa.

Had a small pour on a flight in September 2017 at a local pizza parlor. It was not a bad IPA, especially if you like the flavor of coconut. Oddly, I like coconut flavor (in Asian foods, for example), but not the grainy texture when it's used in baked goods.

This one has a creamy quality which surprisingly seems to come from the coconut.

Looks hazy gold color with a 1-2 finger off white head that faded slowly and left good spotty lacing. Smells of coconut, pineapple, orange, lime, lemonade and biscuit. It smells and tastes like a pina colada, but not in a fake way.

This is more unusual and better than BAers say. A little too much coconut, but less than Oskars.
a) Pours creamy, hazy golden body crowned with lasting and massively lacing head.
s) Passionfruit, pineapple and citrus fruit aromas are too slight over coconut.
t) This fruit salad erupts with powerful flavors with that additional, odd and strong vanilla-coconut back drop. Laid out on a bready, fresh crossant, buttery base.
f) The feel is creamy, buttery and yet puckery. Complex warring but balanced textures are great.
o) The fruit and vanilla clean up nicely with a bitter, fresh hoppy ending. Truly original and would offer my friends.
