Lupu-Luau IPALupu-Luau IPA

Brewed by:
Dogfish Head Craft Brewery
Delaware, United States

Style: American IPA

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 7.30%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
The first Hawaiian Luau in 1819 bucked tradition while maintaining respect for a rich legacy, so when we set out to create this namesake IPA, we found our own way to rebel against restrictive limits of known brewing ingredients while honoring Dogfish's brewing tradition.

What began as an exploration of all things hazy and pale, Lupu-Luau morphed into a coconut-centric IPA. We combined Pils malt with flaked barley, rolled oats, and malted and raw wheat to bring the haze. Then we brought coconut to the party in 3 different ways with toasted coconut, dehydrated coconut water and an experimental hop variety that provides a unique coconut & woody aromas.

Don't listen to all the idiots, I don't like all their beers, but Dog Fish Head got this right! Coconut taste blooms late, after a delicious hop bite. SIMPLY FUCKING AMAZING!

I really love this beer for a lot of reasons. First, I do like ipas that are balanced well for this time of year. This beer is not overly bitter, yet it tastes like and ipa with coconut. The coconut is not overbearing, but it is noticeable and nice. You still feel like it’s a beer versus some of the more potent watermelon or spiced pumpkin beers. It affords some amazing food and wine pairing especially ham, pork, and seafoods because it is unassuming. At over 7 percent, it’s a really nice party beverage for guys or gals. Generally, I can only have one maybe two beers that are pumpkin or watermelon or sours. This is a great crossover ipa, not a sour. If are looking for just another very bitter ipa, don’t buy this one. There are a lot of other beers that fit that bill. This one is Great for the beach or backyard on a summer day. It’s hard to find beers like this in a world with a lot of beer. Full disclosure. I am a home brewer, from Delaware. I am not affiliated with DFH. In fact, the only case of beer I ever returned was a dfh beer, lol. So, I don’t have any issue ripping them. In the case of the above beer, if you find it....suggest you buy it. I definitely drink too much beer, but it’s a passion of mine.

Pours a hazy lemon color into a Belgian beer glass. White 2'' head with minimal retention. Taste is coconut, kiwi, specialty malts, flowery hop. Feels excellent. This on a hot summer day might feel like Nirvana. Overall this is a superb take on an IPA. Very impressive. After the 1st beer I am picking up on some definite pineapple, maybe that is what I thought the kiwi was.

First dogfish head beer I've really liked in a long long time. The coconut adds a hint of sweetness but the hop profile is a wonderful tropical mixture. Semi dry finish and a spot in mouthfeel.

This beer pours a bright gold with an average head. The aroma is very bright and fruity. The coconut flesh tones is strong, as is coconut water, along with kiwi, underripe pineapple, mango, black tea, and pine. The flavor is soft and fruity, with kiwi, pineapple, mango, coconut water, cream, coconut, cashew, and something bright and green. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with bright zingy carbonation. Overall this is an awesome beer - I have had an increasing number of coconut IPAs lately, and this is the first that really gets it right - huge tropical fruit and yet the coconut is noticeable, and included the greenness you get with real coconut.

Poured from a 12oz bottle into a Dogfish Head curved pint glass.

Appearance: Pours a very hazy, unfiltered golden amber in color. Beautiful head retention up and down the glass on this one. Sticky lacing on the inside of the glass, head dies down a bit as it sits but leaves behind some nice white foam. Small bubbles stream through the glass through the cloudiness of this one.

Smell: Big, tropical mango up front on the nose. Really has a soft aroma of citrus, small pine notes, and maybe a slight hint of some coconut, but not much. Really pleasing to say the least, smells like a fruity cocktail you would get at a beachfront resort.

Taste: Wow.. what an amazing concoction of flavors here. First thing I taste is those big mango, papaya, citrusy-juice like flavors. Hops are the start of the show here, giving off a huge explosion of fruitiness. As you hold the beer in your mouth, the back end is where the coconut starts to arrive! Almost pina colada like, the malt backbone is light but the flavor of that dehydrated coconut comes through nicely. I love how Dogfish did the additions of the ingredients on the process of this one. Big hoppy flavor up front that gives away nicely to the start of the show, COCONUT, on the back! Nicely done.

Mouthfeel: Very light in the mouth, which is great for a good summer IPA. Not too heavy, but carbonation is spot on. Refreshing to say the least that the mouthfeel is slightly slick, but not overly bitter from the hops. Sharp and clean.

Overall: I had this first in the Rehoboth Beach brewpub back in 2016 when it was a small batch brewpub exclusive, and instantly, me and my girlfriend had loved it. The coconut character is what sets it apart from anything else you will find on the shelf. This past July, we came back and ended up getting a growler and were so happy it went into full production. I am a huge DFH fan, and this is by far their best IPA on their lineup besides 60/90/120. Flavors are spot on, it's easy to drink, and at 7.3% and $10.99 a six pack, it's well worth the purchase. Hope this becomes a mainstay year round or at least as a summer seasonal.

Lupu-Luau is a very interesting beer, and, though others in my group rejected it out of hand, I found it wonderfully refreshing, very flavorful and enjoyably complex. An array of tropical fruits are present, both in the nose and on the palate, and the pilsner malt is nicely balanced by an ever present hop bitterness. Though I'm not a "coco-nut," this coconut infused creation is done with a very deft hand and just a faint hint of sweetness. I'd buy a Lupu-Luau sixer in a heartbeat.

Pours hazy gold with a dense creamy frothy white foam head. Smells like coconut, vanilla, grapefruit, pineapple, passionfruit, orange citrus, caramelized crackery malts, with floral woody earthy herbal grassy pine. Tastes like coconut, vanilla, grapefruit, pineapple, passionfruit, orange citrus, caramelized crackery malt, with bitter floral woody earthy herbal grassy pine. Feels medium bodied, creamy with smooth moderate carbonation. Overall a nice and interesting coconut IPA.

Wasn't sure what to expect with the concentration on coconut but this IPA balances out the hops for those of you that aren't into India Pale Ales due to their naturally hoppy taste. Pleasantly surprised; not sure why but this beer hits hard in the sleepiness department. A bit higher priced than I would typically pay for an IPA given the 7.3% ABV but it's definitely a beer I will try again.

Wonderful IPA. The taste pushed this one up for me. Excellent bitters and floral taste. Lingers a bit. I get the coconut as an aftertaste at the end. Really crisp and refreshing.

Nice change of pace! Coconut is creamy and thick on the palate. Earthy grassy hops that do not really bite. Solid novelty beer

Pours a hazy gold with a dense, frothy, white head that leaves heavy lacing.

Smell is tropical. Pineapple, lime, coconut.

Taste-Taste follows the nose. Cononut is easily detectable. The coconut water, in particular, is present. Hints of pineapple and citrus close it out. Not super hoppy, but that's not a bad thing IMO.

Mouthfeel- Crisp and bubbly.

Overall- This almost doesn't seem like an IPA. I always thought of hoppiness as the defining feature of an IPA, and this has very little of that. IT is super refreshing though. I am glad I picked up a few on the first nice day of spring. The coconut and tropical fruit is super refreshing. Definitely a really good summer beer.

12 oz. bottle. 06/24/17 bottled on.

pours fairly cloudy, but straw golden in hue. the aroma is really tropical. some coconut notes but even more pineapple notes in my opinion. minty even. finish is resinousy, but also has an assertive pine note. super drinkable and one of the better IPA's Ive had from DFH lately!
