Very Good
Lupu-Luau IPALupu-Luau IPA
Notes: The first Hawaiian Luau in 1819 bucked tradition while maintaining respect for a rich legacy, so when we set out to create this namesake IPA, we found our own way to rebel against restrictive limits of known brewing ingredients while honoring Dogfish's brewing tradition.

What began as an exploration of all things hazy and pale, Lupu-Luau morphed into a coconut-centric IPA. We combined Pils malt with flaked barley, rolled oats, and malted and raw wheat to bring the haze. Then we brought coconut to the party in 3 different ways with toasted coconut, dehydrated coconut water and an experimental hop variety that provides a unique coconut & woody aromas.

Wonderful IPA. The taste pushed this one up for me. Excellent bitters and floral taste. Lingers a bit. I get the coconut as an aftertaste at the end. Really crisp and refreshing.

Don't listen to all the idiots, I don't like all their beers, but Dog Fish Head got this right! Coconut taste blooms late, after a delicious hop bite. SIMPLY FUCKING AMAZING!

If you can get past the lack of head, it's a super nice quirky brew. The coconut isn't too overwhelming and it's super refreshing to drink actually. Pick it up if you find it

Had on draft at dogfish alehouse. I was surprised at how much I liked this quirky beer. The head was a bit disappointing, almost non-existent, probably from the greasiness of the coconut. Nose was coconut and wet dog. Flavor of coconut was nice. Cereal-like. Not too sweet. Just the right hop kiss on this creamy feeling IPA. Weird, but I’d order it again.

Pours a clear pale gold with a bubbly white head.

Tropical and citrus hops with earthy undertones and some floral notes in the nose.

Toasted coconut and toast malt balanced by citrus hops and tropical fruit notes - star fruit - finishes dry with earthy and floral notes.

On tap at Root Down in Five Points, Jax. This was better than I expected. I’m not the biggest coconut fan but the subtle coconut flavor and the effervescent body and feel made this a winner on a very warm and humid summer Florida night. Not sure it qualifies as an IPA bc there wasn’t much of a hop presence but hey, they brewed it!

Clear gold, big fluffy white head, good retention and lace
Bit of pineapple, mango, coconut, and orange aromas
Tastes like coconut water, but bitter
Mouthfeel is actually spot on
I don't like it, but mainly because I'm not the biggest coconut fan

Poured from a can into a tulip

Pours a rather unremarkable golden hue, rather clear for the style, and pretty unspectacular in the "head" department.

The aromas meet the promise on the label: plenty of tropical fruitiness with hints of coconut and citrus hop notes in the background. A nice bouquet.

The flavor falls flat compared with the nose. Pineapple, mandarin orange, and coconut skew this offering rather sweet, and there is not enough hop--citrus or otherwise--to bring this back to center.

The mouthfeel is a bit lacking for the style--a little sticky, and missing characteristic crispness.

Overall, an interesting mix of flavors, but not really an IPA, and certainly far from par for this brewer.

I really love this beer for a lot of reasons. First, I do like ipas that are balanced well for this time of year. This beer is not overly bitter, yet it tastes like and ipa with coconut. The coconut is not overbearing, but it is noticeable and nice. You still feel like it’s a beer versus some of the more potent watermelon or spiced pumpkin beers. It affords some amazing food and wine pairing especially ham, pork, and seafoods because it is unassuming. At over 7 percent, it’s a really nice party beverage for guys or gals. Generally, I can only have one maybe two beers that are pumpkin or watermelon or sours. This is a great crossover ipa, not a sour. If are looking for just another very bitter ipa, don’t buy this one. There are a lot of other beers that fit that bill. This one is Great for the beach or backyard on a summer day. It’s hard to find beers like this in a world with a lot of beer. Full disclosure. I am a home brewer, from Delaware. I am not affiliated with DFH. In fact, the only case of beer I ever returned was a dfh beer, lol. So, I don’t have any issue ripping them. In the case of the above beer, if you find it....suggest you buy it. I definitely drink too much beer, but it’s a passion of mine.

Golden beer with an orange tint. Two finger white head that leaves a few scattered bands of lacing on the glass. Smell is like coconut water. Just a faint hint of coconut. There are also some herbal, grassy and citrusy scents. Taste is citrus and a little sweet up front with the coconut in the middle. It finishes with sweeter coconut flavors and a moderate bitterness. Overall it is a pretty tasty beer but seems a bit light on flavors and ends up tasting like an IPA that was watered down with coconut water.

Surprisingly smooth for an IPA. I didn't get much hoppiness in my singular can of this IPA. But I'm not sure if that's a bad thing necessarily. I do taste a hint of coconut - more akin to a coconut water flavor vs. candy.

What a fantastic deviation from your bitter forward ipas. Smells like a pina-colada. Descent mouth feel as the flavor of coconut dissipates on your palate.

Pours a hazy gold with a dense, frothy, white head that leaves heavy lacing.

Smell is tropical. Pineapple, lime, coconut.

Taste-Taste follows the nose. Cononut is easily detectable. The coconut water, in particular, is present. Hints of pineapple and citrus close it out. Not super hoppy, but that's not a bad thing IMO.

Mouthfeel- Crisp and bubbly.

Overall- This almost doesn't seem like an IPA. I always thought of hoppiness as the defining feature of an IPA, and this has very little of that. IT is super refreshing though. I am glad I picked up a few on the first nice day of spring. The coconut and tropical fruit is super refreshing. Definitely a really good summer beer.

Can poured into a Dogfish Head pint glass

A: Pours hazy golden yellow with a frothy of white head that settles to a firm layer that hangs around and laces quite nicely.

S: Fruity, tropical, a nice touch of coconut, citrus, biscuity malt, and caramel sweetness.

T: Tropical and orchard fruit, peach and pineapple, some citrus, lemon and orange, pleasant hit of coconut, biscuity malt, and caramel sweetness.

M: Medium body, moderate carbonation, slightly creamy.

O: Fun take on an IPA. Wouldn't mind a couple of these on the beach.

A: Hazy gold with rich foamy head and very nice lacing.
N: Coconut, malty sweetness, minor hops, and grainy tones.
T: Follows the nose, you get a sweetness up front with coconut muting the hops and a mild grain feel.
M: Light/Medium
O: I was not very impressed. The coconut came off as chemical to me and muted the hops. It was a little sweet also. I would probably not buy this again because it was a mess in my view, nothing stood out but off flavored coconut.

Very bubbly, large head, light body. Coconut is certainly there, but not too strong and slowly fades as I drink more. Slightly sweet, not too bitter for an IPA. Malty nose.

2/4/18....pours clear light gold, very little foam. Tropical fruit nose, definitely coconut backed. Milky smooth mouthfeel, coconut flavored, creamy. Light mouthfeel, thin. Minty hop bitter. Creative take on an IPA.

Pours an effervescent gold with 2+ fingers of pearl colored head. Nice head retention & lacing

S: Pineapple, coconut once warm

T: Coconut, a little pineapple, plus dryness up front. More coconut, a little passion fruit, some orange juice as this warms, plus dryness. Finishes like a pina-coloda

MF: Medium body, slight carbonation, okay balance

I was hoping for some bitterness to balance this out. It delivers what it promises, but not my jam

L: Clear, slightly hazed bright gold, with a huge foamy white head. Good retention, and tons of lacing.

S: Pineapple, coconut water, Pina Colada, pink grapefruit, lemon peel, toasted coconut, cracker malt.

T: Juicy with pineapple, pink grapefruit and lemon upfront. Gentle crackery malt. Tons of toasted coconut and coconut water. Flavors reminiscent of Pina Colada. Hints of grass on the back end. Fairly sweet but with just enough balancing bitterness.

F: Medium with lots of carbonation, slick and oily in sensation but dries out enough on the finish.

O: A really nice experimental coconut IPA. A tropical treat!

LOOKS: A slightly hazy golden to amber with a finger of white foam that lasts. Slight lacing down the glass.
AROMA: Mild coconut and white bread.
TASTE: See above. Maybe I should let this warm a bit. Bit of an astringent quality in the flavor, citrus in the background.
FEEL: Well carbonated, medium body, and dry.
OVERALL: The can is 2 months old. The overall flavor is mild coconut, and again that Simcoe astringency that I never go back for, twice.

Poured into a shaker pint glass.

Look: Pretty murky dark straw yellow with hues of light tangerine under a white soapy head that doesn’t recede for a long time. Lacing is random splotches and lines.

Aroma: An immediate detection of woody, sweet coconut with lighter hop notes on the backside.

Taste: The IPA-ness comes out first with sharp citrus and tropical fruit notes up front but soon after a delicate sweet light coconut note chases away the hops in the finish. Lightly woody.

Mouthfeel: Medium body, pretty smooth.

Overall: I think coconut lovers will really appreciate this beer, it’s a damn good IPA with the right amount of coconut.

I was intrigued to try this brew as I love coconuts and especially coconut water. Overall, this fell short for me. The smell and look offered more intrigue, but the beer drank more like a summer cocktail gone wrong. Really a bad almost boozy after taste ruined this one.

12oz bottle poured into a tulip glass

A- a loud hiss predicted that this one is over-carbonated, which was proven from the huge foamy white head that came from a slow pour. It eventually settled into a two-finger frothy head that stays around long after the pour

S- tropical and piney hop aroma with soft undertones of coconut. Toasted malt with some grainy notes

T- tropical hop notes up front with highlights of passionfruit and guava. Mid-palate brings out a soft, slightly sweet coconut note. The finish is slightly malty with a piney linger

M- medium body with heavy carbonation leads to a big foamy mouthfeel that continues into the finish

O- nice tropical notes and was actually able to pick out the coconut

L) Pours an ever so slightly hazy straw/amber color. Decent white head with great retention and lacing.

S) There are tropical notes to the nose, but it is dominated by roasty coconut, resin, and a bit of wood.

T) The coconut is definitely present, and the hoppiness is both floral and sappy. I will say you do get both the toasted coconut and the coconut water, and the hops are definitely bringing a "woodiness" to the table as Sam intended. There is a slight, honey like sweetness that lingers as well and blends it all together.

F) The beer is a bit creamier than anticipated, with a medium-high carbonation.

O) I enjoy this one. It isn't a coconut bomb, but it is a recommendation to anyone who hasn't tried it yet.

Can. This was pretty good. Nose was not something I'd ever harp back on but the flavor resonated. Hops, coconut husk and coconut water. Strangely satisfying like several beers from Dogfish Head. I am a coconut junkie, though.
