Reddish-brown color. Nice, off-white head with big bubbles. Good retention and lacing.

Malty, wine aromas of sweet grapes, oak, and earth.

Taste is a little sour, with grape sweetness and malt, oak and a light spice finish. Nicely balanced.

Medium-bodied with a clean, mouth-watering finish. Very drinkable - I had most of the bottle myself.

Hazy amber-copper with a soft off-white ring.

Smell is both Belgian yeast of clove and esters, and red wine oak with a little grape.

Taste is far more Belgian, with wheat, banana and pear, then some grape cough syrup. Red wine comes in on the back end. It's quite a unique combination and actually I think it's a genius stroke, as it really works well together. The wine and grape somehow smooths out the yeast, and the yeast somehow rounds out the wine.

Soft and frothy.

A: Pours a hazy golden orange in color with some moderate amounts of visible carbonation. The beer has a two finger tall foamy off-white head that reduces and condenses to a thick layer over the entire surface of the beer. Significant lacing is observed.

S: Moderate aromas of grape along with orange/grapefruit citrus upfront. Additionally there are lighter aromas of spice (coriander), Belgian yeast, wheat, and just a hint of oak.

T: Starts out with some light grape sweetness along with an almost candied orange peel and some wheat. Next comes stronger grapefruit/orange citrus flavors, spice (coriander), and Belgian yeast. Finally the beer finishes oak and some light hints of alcohol.

M: Medium bodied with heavy amounts of carbonation. Smooth and slightly dry in the finish (likely from the introduction of wine).

O: For the most part, the high amount of alcohol is well hidden in this beer - the beer is refreshing and drinkable. While it does taste too strong, I'm thinking that the high ABV does not make this one for session drinking. There is a nice complexity to the flavor.

There's simply no end to the alterations that Dogfish Head brewers will place upon traditional styles. To push a Belgian witbier to double its normal strength would have been daring enough for most brewers. But oh-no, how about the induction of pinot noire grapes to amplify the winy character of Belgian ale and then aging the newfound concoction in pinot noire barrels. They've certainly "dogfished" this concoction completely up!

Its first cautious and curious sip comes after a murky orange and peach-stained pour. Layering in with a viscous nestle, the aromas and early taste is of candied fruit, perhaps more of orange and perfume than of grape or wine, all upon a lightly toasted and doughy base.

With the weighty beer pressing deeply into the palate, a notion of orange marmalade wafts over the tongue, carrying with it the orange peels, piths and pulp; along with a lemony, apricot, apple and unmistakable grape tone. Somewhat vegetal with verbena, chive and fresh-cut grass, its bracing acidity ushers in a quick finish.

With the simple syrup sweetness lifting, its pinot character thrives in the late palate, highlighted by vinous alcohol with its own peppery warmth. But closing with a semi-sweet weight, the ale remains much more of a sipping beer than a drinkable one. Mild bitterness and rosy spice gives this high gravity wheat beer a hearty prickle on the tongue as it exits.

this is a nice complex brew from dfh, but a night after drinking a deconstruction from odell, any other blended wine barrel beer just isnt going to match up. the appearance is cumin powder dullish yellow in color with some haze and an aroused white head a couple inches high. the nose is coriander and orange right off the bat, ive smelled this many times before, but then comes the tannins from the vino, tart and grape musty. the flavor is much less provocative than the aroma, and sall the flavors seem to come together into some sort of mixing the fingerpaints together flavor where nothing distinct but alcohol can be tasted. as it warms, an oaky earthen flavor comes out in the finish, but something still seems to be missing. mouthfeel is solid, perfectly carbonated and right on medium bodied. its smooth for the strength, and could match up well with some farmy cheeses. overall not my favorite dogfish brew, but as always i appreciate its originality.

edit: had a really old bottle of this dated 2012 last night and its drinking amazingly well. some nice honey sweetness to it, less booze than i remember it having, even when it warms up, and a wonderful wine complexion with the citrus in here, different and refined and delicious, despite quite a lot of sediment having coagulated in here. i didnt expect this to be as awesome as it is now this old. raising up a few scores here, its better with some age on it, it impressed us all!

Bottle dated 9/27/16:
Pours a rusty burnt orange, light obscured by floaties of some sort. The off-white (seemingly orange tinged huge head throws a few large blotches of lacing, but is mainly there to keep me company as a thick cap after it settles.

Smell is a bit musty, and shows the wheat (with little banana), the coriander, and a light floral ester note at its base. There's an almost farmhouse note to it, but not quite as woody or funky (the oak helps a little on the former).

The flavor follows the nose in that the base is a nicely spice Belgian wit beer. The grape is noticeable with a quite musty and barely tart note. This taste really grabs the bulk of the attention - with the wit beer peeking out up front (wiith the orange) and near the end (more banana), but mainly giving the other note a vehicle. A small nod to the barrel aging closes out the taste. LAte int he taste, there's a little cherry note coming out, oddly.

This pour of this beer was nice, tickling with the carbonation and medium full of flavor. The body was also a little more than medium - alcohol barely noticeable.

I didn't notice the floaties until later - although some look like they could be coriander - being darker. I doubt it, but still. Otherwise, the look could go at least a notch higher. The mustiness is a tad heavy, but I feel it makes this nicely unique. I feel it's well put together for what it is trying to do.

Poured from 750ml bottle into tulip.

A: Pours a cloudy orangish red with a barely off-white head that dissipates relatively quickly. Almost looks like some kind of weird fruit juice. Maintains a white collar as you drink, making your glass actually look red and white.

S: Quite aromatic. Interesting notes of red fruits over traditional wit aromas. Definite coriander backed up by citrus rind. Belgian yeast. Also, there's a definite increased level of malt sweetness detectable on the nose - letting you know this is not a standard witbier. The alcohol is hidden well - I would have suspected it to be slightly higher than a normal wit, maybe 6-7%, but not 10%.

T: Quite sweet and malty as it opens on the palate. There's an herbal character from big coriander notes. The fruit undertones are fascinating. The pinot character is very present, but not at all overpowering. The oak is a light note in the background for me. There's a lightly tart and acidic character, which, together with the alcohol, lends a vinous quality to this beer, although it is not boozy. The citric rind note comes to the fore on the finish, contributing to a fruity, herbal, lightly tart aftertaste.

M: There's a round and relatively thick maltiness that can be perceived adjacent to an alcohol thinness that tries to wriggle free. This is definitely an imperial wit. Carbonation is pleasant and moderate.

D: This is a pretty drinkable beer considering it's a 10% imperial, and begins to warm you after a while. Would I want a whole 750 to myself - no. But it's a nice beer to share with a friend.

Overall, a very unique, tasty, and interesting brew that I would buy again and would love to share with more people, as an eye-opener if nothing else. It's beers like this that display the versatilty of beer as a beverage and an art, as well as the ingenuity of experimental brewers.

Served on tap at Brixies in Brookfield IL, served in a 10oz. snifter

It pours a hazy orange with just a hint of pink tinge. It came with a creamy of white head that lasted for a few minutes.

The nose was very fruity; orange, peach, a subtle wine character with the classic witbeer wheat and yeast notes.

The flavor is very complex with distinct influences from the witbeer and from the pinot noir grapes. The front end is where a ramped up witbeer hits you; orange and coriander with a spicy yeast, it then transitions into a what seems like the most mild blush wine. Some light red wine note with a little wood. Those two distinct arms of the beer are married in a way that let each one shine but not overpower each over. A really unique flavor that I'm not in love with but an appreciate the innovation from DFH.

The mouthfeel was somewhat full with the silkyness that a beer with a lot of wheat has. Carbonation was on the high side which I thought was complimentary. I found myself taking nice small sips from this beer in order to appreciate the complexity and there wasn't any hint of the ABV

Purchased from Discount Liquor in Milwaukee, WI. Poured into a wine glass, this beer showed off body that was orange with a reddish tint and a nice white head. Aroma is of oak, vanilla and pinot grapes. It has a soft, very wine-like mouthfeel. The wheat flavors really shine through and are accented by the grape wine tartness. No signs of the 10% alcohol. Excellent drinkability. I need to get some more of this.

750ml bottle with awesome label artwork. Pours into my glass a deep ruby red with hints of orange and a healthy inch of eggshell spritzy foam on top. Lots of small particulate in suspension. Aromas begin with a nice mellow spiciness, especially coriander along with a woody, rustic quality to it. The vinous grape scents are quite nice with hints of dark fruits like black cherry and raspberry. A light yeasty, farmhouse quality about it as well. Quite complex and very nice.

First sip brings a nice sweet malt upfront accentuated by coriander spiciness and woody, earthy oak tones. The grape flavor moves in midway through bringing hints of dark fruits with it. An earthy, yeasty aspect hits on the way down. Smooth with a full complex flavor. An interesting mix of pinot flavors and witbier flavors that ends up being very enjoyable. Finishes with a touch of orange and raspberry and a lingering dry oaky aftertaste. Tasty brew.

Mouthfeel is middle of the road with a nice creaminess brought on by fast moving carbonation across the palate. Goes down smooth and the abv in this one is hardly even noticeable. A tasty brew and a great amped up experimentation of a witbier. I prefer this to the Black & Blue and wish I would have bought more than one bottle. I picked this up for $11.99 and I would say it's worth the coin. One of the best new DFH brews I've had in awhile.

A 750ml capped bottle, bottled on 2/12/07. Poured into a pint glass, it's a very pretty beer. Nice red color, medium white head, well-carbonated. Pretty good lacing. Aroma a little nondescript. Mostly sweet, a little alcohol. Aah, but the taste. Strong wine taste, sweet fruit, malt. Reminiscent of a Belgian. Very smooth and delightful. One to try.

Pours amber with a decent amount of head. Smell is pretty much as advertised. Grapes, wine, nice amount of coriander and some presence of orange peel. Also some alcohol present in the smell. Taste is slight tartness up front, followed immediately by an intense sweetness. Wine characteristics (tart dry fruit, some tannins) come through once the sweetness subsides. Some subtle bitterness on the finish. Interesting, but it doesn't seem to come together, and the sweetness is a bit overpowering. I'm glad I tried this, but I probably wouldn't have it again

It's bronze like an amulet. The heady froth exudes more elixir than beer. Just translucent, it's red to light but brown to shade--perfect bronze. The head is creamy, and as it slowly settles, it sheds on the sides like snakeskin.

Aroma's a relative turn-off, as coriander overtakes any pinot noir influence. Hops and a concentrate-vibe don't exactly appear au natural. I'm squishing my diaphragm as I dig for mo' pinot but, to the nose, no goes. It's sitting in a snifter, and I'm trying to identify the problem. The glass is clean, so I can't fault that...only odd notion is that the brew's freshness has allowed insufficient time for ingredients to mesh into each other and out of the surface...?

Taste is solid, and with it the pinot is present. My suspicion about the smell (lack thereof) is seemingly validated as I shuffle this liquid around my palate and do detect the intricacies: coriander and orange peel, hop nuggets, oak barrels, and wine impart influence. Like a fine wine, I imagine that time does dandy for a beer like this. I'm sure bigger-batch keg servings would also enhance effects. It's unique yet simple--they type of juxtaposition Dogfish Head brewmasters have mastered. There's nothing more than what it says it is, but it's quite good...and noone else does it. The mouthfeel, again akin to most other DFH productions, is strong and is sweet. Well-carbonated, the odd infusions swirl together. Knowing what time could do--or how a taste from the barrels at Rehoboth Beach might be--are factors that detract from my fresh-sip satisfaction. Another novel DFH beer, yet another for which I'd be better served to stow away. It's good, though I'm impatient.

750ml bottle. Pours a very hazy copper orange with a thin and fine white head that quickly recedes to a thin film that leaves some lacing.

The aroma is very wit-like with funky yeast and some bright fruitiness, bananas, cloves and a little vinous wine.

The flavor is earthy yeast, some grapes and citric fruit, quite a bit of vinous alcohol and a fairly grassy and almost tarry bitter finish. The mouthfeel is medium to full bodied with soft carbonation.

Overall, this "imperial wit" is not bad, but it is not well balanced and a bit of a mess.

Presentation: It was poured from a brown 1pint 9.6oz bottle into a tulip glass. The label has a brief description of the beers ingredients and wood ageing. The abv is listed at 10% and there is no freshness or born on date.

Appearance: It has a deep and hazy orange amber colored body with little bits of yeast floating around in it. There is an off white head on top which fades quickly making some slick lacing at the top of the glass before it goes.

Smell: The aroma is strong, fruity, estery and yeasty. I get notes of white grapes, hints of oak, wine like alcohol and hints of something medicinal/phenolic.

Taste/Palate: This has a big body for a Witt and tons of interesting complexity. It has a sweet alcoholic warmth from start to finish which slows down drinkability and reminds you that this is a big beer. Up front I get the fruity notes, the yeast, the spice and some oak. Notes of white grape and citrus orange peel stand out with lighter notes of pineapple, sliced almond and sweet grain all moving in and out with each sip. The finish has some herbal hop notes and bitterness moving in but it remains somewhat sweet and boozy.

Notes: In my opinion this is an outstanding Witbier with all the complexity and character that I love.
