Utopias Barrel-Aged World Wide StoutUtopias Barrel-Aged World Wide Stout
Notes: Brewed in collaboration with Boston Beer Company.

The experience of drinking Utopias is often described as ritualistic. Rare and often rumored about in the darkest corners of the beer community, this variety of World Wide Stout is dark, rich, roasty, and complex.

This beer is a very nice treat and an excellent after Wednesday night hockey beer.

Poured from a bottle ( one of the last from the Extreme Beer Fest) into a tulip glass. Rich dark brown color. Thin, effervescent beige head initially but no retention and little lacing. Deep boozy bourbon smell and taste. Dark chocolate, licorice, dark berries. Some vanilla and warm spice. Very warming and comforting beer. As I said, a nice treat!

Pours a deep brown color with a short, quick fizzy head and no lacing.

The smell is bourbon, vanilla, and cocoa.

The taste is bourbon, port, cherry, vanilla, baking chocolate, and lots of alcohol heat.

The mouthfeel is medium/thick, slight fizzy carbonation with an alcohol burn on the finish.

Overall, this is very complex. Tasty but need to drink it slowly. At less than a year old it could use some time in the cellar.

Appearance - The beer was asphalt black with little head or lacing on the glass.

Smell - The beer smelled like a port with a strong malt backbone.

Taste - The beer drinks like a port, and it’s not even just the abv. The wall of malts that is WWS absorbed strong red grape notes from the Utopia barrels. Notes of fruit leather, oak, and amaretto accompanied the profile. The beer had a pleasantly warming finish.

Mouthfeel - The beer landscape had change since I first had this beer. I expected more thickness.

Overall - WWS has been improved.

Look: Jet black dark hole pour with very little to no head of foam. No lacing happening on this pour.
Smell: Immediately getting notes of the bourbon followed by cocoa, dark chocolate, and a bit of cherry/ vanilla notes as well.
Taste: Huge hit of bourbon. Not intended to have a big sip rather a small sipper for this. The first sip literally woke me up as I mistakenly took a big sip. Getting some flavors of chocolate, sweet vanilla/ cherry. Tasting the huge hops for this one too.
Feel: Not as thick as I thought this was going to be. Starts off with big alcohol taste but finishes with the roasty chocolate as written on the bottle followed by a cherry/ vanilla finish. Curious to see how this would be in 3 years.
Overall: This threw me off in the beginning but honestly this is a great sipper for after dinner. I enjoyed the taste of bourbon followed by the chocolate sweet vanilla taste. This is definitely a stout that every beer geek should try at least once in their life.

Poured from 12oz bottle into pint glass in May 2022. There was no bottled or brewed date on the label, but I drank this less than 1 month after purchase.

Appearance: Very dark black with almost no head. Head was tan, and thins out quickly, and leaves very little lacing on the glass, as is typical of imperial stouts.

Smell: Strong bourbon aroma as expected. Some roasted coffee, and chocolate. There is some additional sweetness like vanilla as well. Not much hop aroma.

Taste: There is some bourbon flavor, but not as much as I expected from the aroma. Also some coffee flavors along with the bourbon. Some chocolate, smoky roasted malt flavors, and a little caramel flavor. Maybe a little vanilla flavor as well. Flavors are very bold. There is a strong alcohol presence that matches 17.5% on the label. A strong coffee, chocolate, and whiskey aftertaste, that is really enjoyable.

Mouth-feel: Thick, but with an extremely smooth and creamy body.

This is an excellent barrel aged Imperial Stout, and it has a variety of flavors that adds a nice complexity to the beer. The balance of flavors is outstanding. It is very smooth and enjoyable to drink. I rate this up with other outstanding beers such as Founders CBS & KBS, and Weyerbacher Sunday Morning Stout. Even though this is very expensive, I would buy this again.

World Wide Stout is the best high ABV stout (non-barrel aged) out there. The variants are also amazing. This one is no exception. Black as night. Boozy, rich, coffee aroma. Chocolate, molasses, dark malts, sweet, boozy. Very thick,. Overall, a crazy decadent stout.

A strong scent of alcohol with the smell of malt dominating the background.

There's a rich coffee taste with a hint of dark chocolate up front with bitterness and simultaneously the sweetness of malts and bourbon. The flavors are all extremely bold.

It's medium bodied with medium carbonation. The finish starts out very alcoholic but then the coffee bitterness is there.

Overall this is a fantastic barrel aged imperial stout. I can't stress enough just how bold it is but it really works. I give it a 5.6 out of 6. Fantastic!

Bottle from the 2021 Extreme Beer Box. Pours a mostly opaque very dark amber brown with a finger of rocky tan head that dissipates to a ring, minimal lacing, smell is bourbon, chewy toffee, dark caramel, molasses, dried dates, hints of chocolate, coffee, and cake batter, taste is bourbon, dark roast malts, burnt caramel, molasses, roast coffee, hints of toffee and dried dates, feel is light bodied to thin, medium carbonation, sweet. Haven’t had any Utopias but I have had World Wide Stout, this tastes like stout spiked bourbon; complex, boozy, fruity, and off-centered. Would love to see a Palo Santo version of this.

Bought a single 12oz bottle $9.99 Village Bottle Shop
D2701135711 stamped on bottle
Smell of chocolate, fudge, molasses when it warms, then bourbon
Dark black color
Heavy mouthfeel
Medium-light carbonation
Taste of raisins, figs, chocolate, bourbon, hides ABV really well
Overall a great beer to be experienced at least once. Makes me curious about Utopias.

12oz bottle. Stamped on bottle neck is 'D2701201811'.
Dark brown colored body. Brief fizzy head upon pouring. No lacing.
Aroma is boozy, with roasted malts, chocolate, dark fruit and barrel notes similar to port.
Taste is dark roasted malts, chocolate, prunes, dates, and dried natural apricots. Higher alcohol wafts off the brew and results in a dry finish.
Thinner than medium mouth feel. Has a touch of burn on the tongue. Okay carbonation.
Solid sipper with layers of flavor and nose expression. High alcohol content makes itself known, which warms the mouth to the stomach.

12oz bottle, 2021
L: near black body, head disappears as fast is it is poured
S: roasted barley, oak, dark fruit, molasses, dark chocolate
T: dark chocolate, oak, sherry, cherry, raisin, molasses, caramel, booze
F: fuller body, lower carbonation, a definite boozy sipper that takes hours to drink
O: one of those beers where you can savor it because you know you’re probably never going to have it again

Poured at 52°. Fleeting tan head leaves, initially, a thin ring; no cap retention, no lace; thick legs on swirl; opaque black with ruby see through body. Nose is oak and Sherry; hot boozy exhale; roast coffee notes as beer warms. Boozy dark chocolate; semi sweet caramel; dark fruit; bitter roast coffee; sweet Pedro Ximenez sherry finish. Hot phenolic mouth warmth (17.3%); medium plus body; light carbonation; alcohol bite on tip of tongue; dry barrel finish. Overall the barrel flavors smooth out the roasty bitterness of the base; the combination still packs a big boozy punch with plenty of alcohol heat, which I like when this well done.

12oz bottle, 2021 release, poured into a stemless wine glass.

The beer pours a deep burgundy color, cola browns, ambers, with hints of ruby red, nice opacity, a finger or so of bone colored head that has moderate retention and spotted lacing. The aroma is lovely, warm stone fruits, brown sugar, hot oak, brandy spirit, caramel, loads of vanilla, a little coconut and toffee. The flavors are great, chocolate covered cherry, warm oak, nice char, lots of brandy-esque spirit that gets hotter as it warms, vanilla, toffee, coconut, stone fruits and heart grain lingers. The mouthfeel is good, coating, heavy body, thick and chewy with a hot and dry finish.

Verdict: A really nice barrel-aged stout from Dogfish Head and Boston Beer Co. This adds some excellent dynamism to World Wide Stout and draws out a lot of complexities from the Utopias barrels. It shows every bit of the 17.3% ABV but without detracting much at all from the beer.

Better than decent barrel-aged stout, but does the world need yet another of these, particularly at 17% ABV? I can only tolerate this style in small doses. For what it is, however, it is a very well-made beer.

this is beyond glorious, an overly generous share from a good friend, set it up with a real old world side, then this one, then the actual utopias, impressive run, and this really just slays. shiny black and high light brown headed from the bottle, almost matches the label to me, obsidian with little bubbles piercing through, pretty beer. the nose is hot right away, way more alcoholic than the long aged original, sharp even, but right behind it is all the richness and depth in the world from high end vanilla pods to decadent bourbon, spice cake, rum raisin, toffee, maple, turbinado sugar, some umami but not soy, charcoal, ancient oak, light cedar wood even, cherry and prune, tanned leather, pipe tobacco, wet soil, campfire smoke, and heady espresso, its just everything all at once yet impossibly cohesive, and as i get to tasting al of this, with each slowly warming sip, i start to appreciate the base beer anew, like its an awesome vehicle for this special barrel treatment, perhaps the only appropriate vehicle for it, and it takes on fresh life in this context. lots of dried fruit as it warms, subtle clove and even allspice and anise, again cigar and raw cocoa, amazing. huge yeah, but not quite as viscous as i thought it might be, believe it or not, and i love the way the aftertaste hangs around, i definitely taste the utopias coming through the most at the very end. a really special drinking experience, thanks to my buddy for facilitating, hope to try this again in about ten years after some serious cellar time! i know these were spendy, if you could even find them, but i have to say worth it, even though i didnt buy it. astoundingly good!

Bought at Liquor Shed in Casper.
Code reads D2701 2031 11. 270th day of 2021?

It pours pitch black with a small but lasting head of tan foam. Lacing is very good.

Smells of burnt malt, roasted malt, whiskey, leather, vanilla, dark pitted fruit...yikes, so much going on. Doesn't smell all that boozy.

The taste reflects everything that I mentioned with the addition of the more than ample abv! Burn baby Burn.

Only medium bodied with plenty of carbonation.

This is my last bottle and I will miss it.

Pours dark black/brown with a thin tan head that fades quickly. Aroma is roasted malts and dark fruits with a boozy background sorta whisky note. Taste follow with an evolution of roasted malts, whisky burn, and dark fruits. It's not as deep as many barrel aged beers are but there's a lot going on. Feel is very good, again not a rich as a barrel aged WWS would be but it's good. Overall it's delicious and complex that lives up to expectations, but perhaps does not exceed them.

Poured from the bottle into a branded Dogfish Head snifter.

Simple chestnut brown, mildly looking oily but coming out straight into a light bodied and very thin collared ring of quite big bubbled edge. Minor sense of legs for a high abv as well.

Examining the aroma, excellent sense of oak aging. Deep thick and round rich oak with hints of faint heat, and a mix of wooded heat that is like an almost barrel straight malt brandy. Minus the fruit, a heated wood romp of earth and smashing oak, that gets bigger with more examination. Touches light touches of char and thick malt, but is just a straight heated woody smash.

Palate is truly a unique animal. Straight up lightened body, doesn't have the rich round and woody push of thick mouthfeel for a barrel aged beer, but the flavors that transpire are still exquisite and delicious. Just the faintest touch of dark burnt raisin, particularly on the finish, but the mid palate explodes in a light syrup of wood and ash mollasses that coats wonderfully. Spicy tickly finish with a surprising amount of dark cocoa and very minimal heat. Some of the cocoa quality really gets diverse going into dark fruits of plum, date, dried fig.

Real nice tasting big beer. Very interesting woody quality, if it had more girth and mouthfeel this could be a serious breakthrough in stout quality and a whole new category all it's own.
