Dogfish Head Craft Brewery
Delaware, United States
Retired (no longer brewed)
Notes: This is a clean, golden ale brewed with an irresponsible load o' fresh hops.

The bulk of the hop character comes from 50 pounds of Wet Galena hops shipped directly from the fields of Washington to our brew-house. Once a year we utilize these super fresh, straight from the vine hops to make a unique hop centric beer.

Brewer Bryan (check out his blog post on this beer) piled the hops on top of a base made with American and German barley and a bit of German wheat then fermented it with a German Kolsch yeast. Kolsch yeast is one of the few German ale yeasts out there and leaves us with a dry and crisp beer without the normal fruitiness associated with ale yeasts. Southern Cross hops from New Zealand contribute a bit of bitterness, but the Galena hops are the star of the show providing a pungent earthy hop presence.

Listed this as Kolsh, because that's the yeast strain that was used and what the beer most tastes like (IMO).

The beer pours a very cloudy, almost white honey color with very good head retention and consdierable lacing. Do not get much on the nose.... maybe some very light wheat and biscuit dough. The flavor profile is interesting. The beer comes acrosss as very dry and impressively bitter, all on what seems like a wheat beer frame. The finish is quite bitter, with the alcohol completely unnoticeable (as you would expect). Mouthfeel is medium bodied with a fairly long finish, and I'm impressed by the amount of flavor I get in this relatively low alcohol beer.

While not my cup of tea, it's hard not to be pretty impressed with this flavorful, bitter, low alcohol beer.

Smell is grassy with grape notes.

This is a dry, crisp beer, with a grassy and earthy taste. Dry, but bready mouthfeel and finish.

Very drinkable session beer, as kolsch beers are designed to be. In addition to Shelter Pale Ale, this could be a gateway beer to the DFH world.
