Dogfish Head Craft Brewery
Delaware, United States

Style: American Double / Imperial Stout

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 10.50%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
Black & Red is a velvety smooth, dry-minted stout with a serious fruit problem! The huge portion of heavily roasted grains brings a dry, chocolatey character that contrasts Black & Red's sweet, fruity, full body.

As you tilt your glass, you'll notice that the black color you are perceiving is actually a very deep red and that the rich creamy foam has a tinge of pink to it. Black & Red starts off roasted and warming with a robust mintiness from 100 pounds of organic mint (from our friends at Washington's Green Grocer) added to the secondary fermentation and finishes out sweet and smooth.

On tap at the Mellow in Greensboro.Poured into a goblet jet black with almost no head to speak of,a thin wispy mocha colored top.Mint and and wine barrel fruity aromas,I really picked up alot wine-like aromas there, some dark fruit and chocolate also came into play.Minty ans deep chocolate flavors that meld into raspberry-like fruitiness, that fruitiness becomes a bit cloying after awhile.Hmm this beer is different but Iam not sure what I think, the mint is different but it gets to be to sweet for me.

Had this on tap at the DFH Brewpub in Rehoboth

A: Served in a goblet, the beer is black in color with a tight, brown/gray head. Nice retention and left wisps of lacing, but nothing substantial.

S: Lots of mint, some chocolate and roasted malt. The raspberries come through more as the beer warms.

T: Tons of mint with some fruit mixed in. The best I can do to describe the taste is to compare it to the cough syrup you give to kids...the kind that I always dreaded drinking.

M: Medium bodied with a pretty good creaminess. There is a slight minty tingle.

O: I had high hopes, but the first time I got it, I took a sip and my immediate reaction was, I can't believe I have an entire glass. Normally I like most DFH beers, but this one was a complete miss for me.

On tap at World of Beer in Raleigh. Served in a snifter

A - arrived pitch black with a thin layer of soft brown head that has great retention

S - sour, chocolate, mint, tart, medicine

T - medicine, cherries, mint, chocolate, alcohol, tart, sour

M - full bodied, smooth, warm

This is an odd beer. Part of me liked it but part of me was put off by the medicinal notes. The mint/cherry/chocolate notes are pleasing up front but then finish with a tart almost sour note which is also off putting. If you like fruit stouts this is a good beer. If you're a a purist, then this isn't for you.

On tap at the Falls Church Dogfish Head Ale house. This is one of the best beers I have ever had. It is so complex and great.

Poured a midnight black with slight hint of purple and red color. Thin brown head that was barley even there when the beer got to the table.

Some great raspberry smells and some hints of licorice and smoked hickory.
Flavors of chocolates, cherry, raspberry and a huge smokey wine taste. This one is super sweet with a very creamy taste a lot of froth.
Also some chicory and grape flavors that come is as you drink this beer.
I dare say this is the most beautiful beer I have had to date.
So happy with this brew.

Big thanks goes out to mikesgroove to sharing this one with me! Served from growler into a Three Floyds imperial pint. Poured a massively dark brown with a half finger tan head that subsided to a minimal amount quickly. Maintained decent lacing throughout the glass. The aroma was comprised of sweet malt, dark chocolate, raspberry, strawberry, soy sauce, and mint. The flavor was of sweet malt, raspberry, dark chocolate, milk chocolate, alcohol, and mint. It had a heavy feel on the palate with medium carbonation. Overall this was a pretty good brew. The berry aspect of this one was very intense and likely covered up a lot of subtle flavors going on in this one. I really wish this one would have toned back on the berry. However, it didn’t completely kill the brew though. Definitely worth trying if you get the chance.
