Had on tap at Fairfax DFH brew pub. Pours light gold with quickly disappating head. Really enjoyed the light and fruity aspects of this beer. Worth seeking out.

Dogfish Head Craft Brewery "Firefly Ale"
on tap @ Johnny Brenda's, $6.50/pint

I stopped in at Johnny Brenda's last night to see a band called Pere Ubu. I wasn't impressed with the draft list but then I noticed DFH Firefly Ale which I'd never heard of so I ordered it. I thought it might be too much for my big gay friend who doesn't drink beer, so I ordered him a hefeweizen, but I was wrong in my choice and later on he ordered a Firefly himself and liked it even better than his first.

Appearance: Arghhhhh.... I hate to review a beer in a bar.... seems a clear golden-amber that's headed towards copper in color (shall we just say brass?) beneath a half finger thick head of white. The head retention is OK, and the lacing is surprisingly good given that I'm looking at a bar glass as opposed to a "beer clean" glass at home.

Aroma: Again, how difficult is this in a bar? At least there's no smoking and no one is wearing strong cologne or perfume... grainy/malty, almost wheat with apple/pear and perhaps grape in the yeasty fruitiness. OR, is that the hops?

Flavor: Sweetish grainy malt with moderate fruity notes (as noted: apple/pear, grape, but also a slight touch of lemon). Well balanced. Sweetish and malty but then dry in the finish. It begs to be served from cask via hand pump.

Mouthfeel: Medium-light in body with a standard carbonation.

Overall: Quite drinkable. Balanced and nicely rounded. Interesting.

Tastes bready with a hint of hops. Hops are a faint herbal sun tea note. Not a great beer, but coming into air conditioning after a hot walk and drinking this was quite nice. Balanced and refreshing, but wouldn't try more than once unless it was free in the future.
