Dogfish Head Craft Brewery "Firefly Ale"
on tap @ Johnny Brenda's, $6.50/pint

I stopped in at Johnny Brenda's last night to see a band called Pere Ubu. I wasn't impressed with the draft list but then I noticed DFH Firefly Ale which I'd never heard of so I ordered it. I thought it might be too much for my big gay friend who doesn't drink beer, so I ordered him a hefeweizen, but I was wrong in my choice and later on he ordered a Firefly himself and liked it even better than his first.

Appearance: Arghhhhh.... I hate to review a beer in a bar.... seems a clear golden-amber that's headed towards copper in color (shall we just say brass?) beneath a half finger thick head of white. The head retention is OK, and the lacing is surprisingly good given that I'm looking at a bar glass as opposed to a "beer clean" glass at home.

Aroma: Again, how difficult is this in a bar? At least there's no smoking and no one is wearing strong cologne or perfume... grainy/malty, almost wheat with apple/pear and perhaps grape in the yeasty fruitiness. OR, is that the hops?

Flavor: Sweetish grainy malt with moderate fruity notes (as noted: apple/pear, grape, but also a slight touch of lemon). Well balanced. Sweetish and malty but then dry in the finish. It begs to be served from cask via hand pump.

Mouthfeel: Medium-light in body with a standard carbonation.

Overall: Quite drinkable. Balanced and nicely rounded. Interesting.

Draft, poured into a nonic pint from a growler filled at the Brewery. Very slightly hazy straw-golden color, topped by a white two finger head that falls away to a film. Spotty lacing. Quite lager-like.

Nose has a touch of sweet fruitiness leading to citrus and spice notes from the hops. Once again, not unlike a good pilsner lager, if just a bit thicker.

Tasting starts out with lightly sweet caramel malts, some fruity esters (banana, pear) that are quickly chased down by spicy/lemon-y hop notes. The finish is dry, crisp, and just a touch bitter, though that bitterness doesn't linger on the palette so long as to overstay it's welcome. Very refreshing.

Mouthfeel is just slightly thick, still very sessionable at a moderate 5% ABV. This is certainly the lightest beer I've had from Dogfish Head.

The folks at DFH clearly knew what they were doing with this one. This being a special brew for their partnership with a major summer outdoor music festival, having this be a fairly light, thirst-quenching offering was a very wise move. I could easily see one downing quite a few of these on a hot day... one could approach this as if it were a just slightly "overweight" lager.

Smells and tastes like a great pils. A touch of fruit (pear in syrup) and grassy hops. Loved the subtle malt - tasted like a Munich or Vienna malt - sweet bread - delish.

Had a couple of these during the Festival right from the DFH Brewery Tent. Nice and refreshing. Very enjoyable on a hot day. Glad I got to try this one, but went right back to the 90 Minute. Great venue to have a few beers.

Dry and slightly fruity. Almost like a champagne?
