Reviewed from notes. Poured from a 750 mL bottle, bottled on 1/28/13. The head was the color of a manilla folder and the body was a bright apricot. Moderate lace.

The smell was earthy and flowery hops. Citrus.

The taste was a bit creamy and sweat. A little peppery bite. Spicy and interesting.

The mouthfeel was medium in body. Moderate carbonation. Overall solid.

Rhizing Bines is a phenomenal looking IPA. It pours out golden with a massive, fluffy white head that retains forever. The aroma is interesting, there's some caramel malts for sure, but there's some strange hopping going on here. Fruity hops are probably the main hop flavor I get here, along with some bright fruits. There's also an interesting nutty aspect going on here. The taste is very good. It's not a traditional IPA at all because of the unique hop flavors. I can tell they're imparted by the hops, there's just a such a big bright fruit flavor that is unique and blends perfectly with the caramel malts. The nuttiness comes through big as well. There's also a bit of floral and citrus going on with the hops. The mouthfeel is full and creamy, and the drinkability is outstanding. Overall, Rhizing Bines is one of the most unique IPAs I've had in a while. It's a sincerely wonderful beer, just don't expect a hop onslaught. It's something completely different from that.

A: This poured a clear gold with moderate white head.
S: It smelled like fresh oranges and faint grapefruit, with some honey and milky caramel and rye barrels.
T: It tasted like rye bread and citrus hops, with some sweet caramel and wild honey and fresh cedar. It had a clean and mellow bitter aftertaste.
M: It was somewhat thick with a little carbonation. Decent slick body.
D: This was a nice beer, but not really what I was expecting. The scent and taste weren't anything special as an IPA, but they had an intriguing character. The body was ok, and the alcohol was well hidden with a very smooth finish, so it was really easy to drink. Nice to try once.

Poured from bottle into a pint glass

Appearance – Pours a medium amber color golden color with a nice one finger pure white head. The head has very good retention, slowly fading over time to leave a great level of lacing on the sides of the glass.

Smell- The aroma was not all the heavy but consisted of a nice blend of fruity aromas as well as some other lighter hop smells . The fruit was a mix of melon and some tropical notes of tangerine and mango with the hoppy notes being mostly of a nice mix of grapefruit, floral, pine and herbal smells.

Taste – The taste begins with a mild hop flavor of a grapefruit nature and a fruity flavor. The fruit flavors are mainly of a melon nature creating a rather sweet and lightly hopped flavor. As the taste advances other hop flavors begin coming to the tongue as well the melon lightening to a small extent. The hop flavors that begin taking over are of a more herbal like nature with the melon now being replaced by some flavors of honey and a light tropical fruit flavor. Toward the end, more hop flavors of an herbal and grassy nature dominate the hop taste to leave a moderately sweet and “green” flavor to linger on the tongue.

Mouthfeel – The body of the beer was on the more syrupy and thick side with a carbonation level that was rather average to just above average. The syrupy feel actually complemented the melon flavors quite nicely in my opinion giving it a more chewy yet slick fruit watery fruit like feel of a melon. The carbonation being on the average to just above average side was furthermore both nice of the melon as well as made for a quite easily drinkable beer. While the carbonation was nice for the melon flavor, it did hide some of the hop flavors, so… it is sorta a toss up on the mouthfeel.

Overall – A fairly melon sweet but overall quite drinkable brew with a good hop blend. While I would have liked a little more hoppiness, it was overall a quite enjoyable drink.
